Socio-demographic recording of HIV patients was conducted to gain a better knowledge of the disease profile, and to aid into the development of more effective HIV prevention and care strategies. Demographic studies of pregnant women who test positive for HIV can serve as proxies for targeted HIV interventions in a wider community as well as mother-to-child transmission prevention. Material and methods: A total of 607 pregnant women, aged 15-49 years, who first visited ANC clinic during a period of January-March 2020 were enrolled. Samples were gathered for three months, or until target sample size was met. Chi-square test was performed to determine various age factors. Link between demographic characteristics and risk of HIV infection was determined using logistic regression approach with SPSS version 26.0. Results: Overall, no demographic variables were found to be substantially associated with HIV prevalence. However, research on demographic characteristics, history of HIV testing, and COVID-19 pandemic revealed that the most conducted tests were among young, less educated, primigravida, and rural women with poor socio-economic status. Conclusions: There is a relationship between parity, employment status, education level, and age and HIV testing among pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2022 Termedia Publishing House Ltd.. Despite antiretroviral treatment (ART) treatment showing significant clinical importance by meeting the goal of therapy, there is still a number of deaths due to socio-economic, demographic, and health-related factors. Therefore, this study was aimed to investigate the survival status and predictors of mortality for adult HIV-positive patients treated with ART. Material and methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted with 1,285 of HIV-infected patients aged 15 years and greater, who were enrolled in ART at Mizan-Tepi University Teaching Hospital from September, 2007 to January, 2015. A multivariable Cox regression model was applied to assess significant predictors of mortality. Results: During follow-up period, a total of 1,285 patients contributed to 59,237 person/year of followup, and 273 (21%) of the patients died, showing overall incidence rate of 4.6 per 1,000 persons/ year (273/59,237). The median follow-up period was 44 months. During follow-up, 273 (21%) patients died, of whom nearly 32% and 12% of deaths occurred within 6 months and between 6 and 12 months of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) initiation, respectively. Conclusions: Multivariable Cox proportional hazards model revealed that having concomitant tuberculosis infection, low baseline CD4 count, low baseline weight, living in rural area, using of a substance, older age, lower educational level, higher World Health Organization (WHO) clinical stages, functional status, and marital status were all significantly associated with progression to death for HIV/AIDS-infected patients. First AIDS cases were registered in 1981, and later, types of HIV infection, such as HIV-1 and HIV-2 were identified. HIV belongs to class of retroviruses, known as ‘lenti-viruses’ and ‘slow’ viruses. A literature assessment was conducted through several reliable national and international journals as well as books and monographs, to investigate reverse transcriptase inhibitor (RI) from human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). Reverse transcriptase inhibitor limits the reverse transcriptase activity, which is considered the key enzyme of retroviral multiplication process, and eventually prevents infection and progression of retroviruses. In the current paper, more than twenty-five drugs were presented, which are used for management/treatment of AIDS. The aim of the present review was to summarize the latest update on reverse transcriptase inhibition. Lately, significant advancement has been observed on the growth of HIV-drugs targeting reverse transcriptase enzyme. There is a continuous increase in various compounds with anti-HIV activity and isolated from natural sources. The present review provided a selection of publications concerning the topic. Salient features of reverse transcriptase inhibitors (both NRTIs and NNRTI's) and possibility for development of new chemical entity were presented.","PeriodicalId":53943,"journal":{"name":"HIV & AIDS Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80150521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and predictors of IPV in PLHIV. Material and methods: This was an analytical cross-sectional study carried out in Enugu State, Southeast Nigeria, among 360 PLHIV receiving care in a tertiary hospital. A systematic sampling method was used to select participants during clinic visits, and data was collected using a pretested questionnaire adapted from Nigerian demographic and health survey. Responses were based on incidents, which had occurred within a period of twelve months prior to the day of interview. P -values of < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: The mean age of respondents was 35 ± 5 years. One hundred and eighty-nine (52.5%) respondents had experienced a form of IPV in the last 12 months preceding the study. Being female and having a partner who uses illicit drugs or alcohol were found to be predictors of IPV (AOR = 2.251, 95% CI: 1.438-3.522) and (AOR = 1.467, 95% CI: 0.301-0.725), respectively. Conclusions: Prevalence of IPV was high in respondents in this study and in light of these findings, there is need to facilitate IPV screening, counseling, and improve patient awareness of IPV in routine management of PLHIV in care and treatment facilities in Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":53943,"journal":{"name":"HIV & AIDS Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85035659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
