Die Sturm und Drang-Dramatik schwankte zwischen Übereinstimmung und Bruch mit den sozialen und moralischen Normen: Der Hofmeister in J. M. R. Lenz’ gleichnamigem Stück scheitert mit seinem Widerstand gegen soziale Zwänge und erscheint in ironischem Licht; H. L. Wagner klagt in seiner Kindermörderin die Gesellschaft wegen der ungerechten Verurteilung der Hauptfigur an, das Stück schließt aber mit einer versöhnlichen Wendung; F. Schillers Räuber führen die Übertretung so gut wie aller moralischen Gebote vor, aber am Ende läutert sich Karl Moor. Der Zensurdruck und der Geschmack des Publikums bewirkten Selbstzensur, drei zentrale Stücke des meist mit Aufbegehren gegen gesellschaftliche Normen verbundenen Sturms und Drangs erweisen sich als kompatibel mit dem ‘Drama des Gehorsams’: Ironie und happy endings entziehen der Kritik zumindest teilweise den Boden.","PeriodicalId":53844,"journal":{"name":"OXFORD GERMAN STUDIES","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48982834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Das Hauptmerkmal der Romane besteht darin, dass sie sozialkritisch sind und eine neue Ästhetik des Schreibens über den Stadtraum entwickeln. Durch die Einführung der ‘Figur der Störung’, des Entmieteten und Verdrängten leisten die Texte einen Beitrag dazu, gesellschaftliche, politische und soziale Fehlentwicklungen bewusst zu machen. Die Autoren und Autorinnen greifen Themen wie die Mietpreisexplosion, soziale Verdrängung, Immobilienspekulationen und damit einhergehende Kiezzerstörung auf und veranschaulichen, wohin die Gentrifizierung der Innenstädte führen kann. * The Berlin ‘gentrification’ novel is a new genre. Its main features are social criticism and a new aesthetic of writing about cities. ‘Disturbance figures’ — people priced out and excluded — create an awareness of socially and politically harmful developments. Writers treat rent explosions, ousting techniques, property speculation, all amounting to the destruction of localities as a consequence of gentrification.","PeriodicalId":53844,"journal":{"name":"OXFORD GERMAN STUDIES","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/00787191.2021.1925420","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45866300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These diverse writings were not collected and edited until 2019, on the occasion of his 250th birthday. They show Humboldt as a master of minor genres, an international and multilingual author, an early post-disciplinary researcher and a subtle autobiographical writer, a public intellectual and a post-colonial critic. They include studies on indigenous American peoples, the migration of plants and the politics of epidemiology. Paradoxically, the success of Humboldt’s public communication generated a mythology that eclipsed the reception of his research.","PeriodicalId":53844,"journal":{"name":"OXFORD GERMAN STUDIES","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/00787191.2021.1927361","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46725298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The anecdotal pop-text by Shapira and Gardi’s novel with a narrative in broken German push the boundaries of the traditional concept of literature and subversively deal with the paradigms of culture of memory and the official migration policy. Yet remarkable technical and political innovations distinguish Lotte Reiniger’s 1926 ‘Scherenschnitte’ shadow animation film Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed. Engaging with various readings of Reiniger’s evolving technical and narrative approaches, this article complicates unproblematized celebrations of the film’s innovations as well as critiques of the film as Orientalist, arguing that both facets are in complex ways interdependent. He was one of those writers whose biographies were shaped and deformed by the SED regime and one of the few who eloquently exposed the mechanisms of the totalitarian state. Fuchs’s literary oeuvre is a testimony of his times as well as a confrontation with the communist regime and its Stasi records. Saturated with his own life experience, his writing takes the reader on a journey into the second German dictatorship, behind the scenes of the (post) socialist society. The article centers on the (dis)continuities of polemical discourse on Islam, Muslims and the prophet Muhammad between the German version of the pilgrimage account first published in Mainz in 1486, and the Latin religious polemics it interpolates extensively, namely two texts by converso authors: Petrus Alfonsi’s Dialogus contra iudaeos and Paulus de Santa Maria’s Additiones ad Postillam Nicolai de Lyra. These comparative case studies reveal two complementary interpolative approaches. The first is to edit borrowed text passages to fit the argumentative structure of the target text. The second is to juxtapose borrowed text with original contrasting argumentation in the target text. Both contribute towards an argumentatively scathing and rhetorically emotive anti-Islamic polemic, which expands on the Latin canon of established tropes and arguments on which this vernacular pilgrimage account draws.","PeriodicalId":53844,"journal":{"name":"OXFORD GERMAN STUDIES","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/00787191.2021.1927360","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46286369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Motifs of arrival and departure occur so frequently in her writing. Even the violent behaviour of Herr Iger in Der Oger can be explained by his insecure status. It opens with Canetti’s first visual memory: each day a man threatens to cut out his tongue if he tells anyone about the man’s affair with the boy’s nanny. The boy kept his mouth shut and his tongue was saved. Here the tongue stands for language — which as the author later claims is a means through which he can evade even the power of death. In Canetti’s work of cultural anthropology Crowds and Power the darkest events take place in the microcosm of the oral cavity. These are the actions of consuming and incorporating extraneous matter, in which Canetti sees the origins of all power processes. In Canetti’s view, mouth, throat and teeth are instruments of power rather than speech as they enact the assimilation, digestion and nullification of outside elements. Where does this leave the tongue? This article investigates this gap in Canetti’s thinking, locating the tongue anatomically and symbolically in an unstable zone between speaking and eating, self and world, inclusion and exclusion, life and death. * Die autobiographische Schrift Die gerettete Zunge von Elias Canetti ist nicht nur ein Dokument über die Kindheitsjahre des Autors, sondern auch eine Geschichte über Sprache und Tod. Das Buch wird mit Canettis frühestem Erinnerungsbild eröffnet: Täglich droht ein Mann, dem kleinen Jungen Canetti die Zunge abzuschneiden, wenn er die Liebschaft zwischen ihm und dem Kindermädchen verraten sollte. Das Kind hielt den Mund und die Zunge wurde gerettet. Die Zunge steht hier für die Sprache — ein Mittel, mit dem, wie der Autor später behauptet, er sich sogar der Macht des Todes entziehen könne. In Canettis kulturanthropologischer Studie Masse und Macht vollzieht sich gerade im Mikrokosmos der Mundhöhle das Dunkelste: die Vorgänge der Verzehrung und Einverleibung, in denen Canetti die Ursprünge aller Machtprozesse sieht. Nach Canetti bilden Mund, Schlund und Zähne nicht primär Teile des Sprechapparats, sondern vielmehr das Instrumentarium der Macht, mit dem man sich das Fremde aneignet, es verdaut und annulliert. Und wo bleibt dabei die Zunge? Entlang dieser offensichtlichen Lücke in Canettis Überlegungen über Macht bewegen sich die Fragen des Vortrags, nach der anatomischen und symbolischen Verortung der Zunge bei Canetti in einer changierenden Zone zwischen Sprechen und Essen, Selbst und Welt, Inklusion und Exklusion, Leben und Tod.","PeriodicalId":53844,"journal":{"name":"OXFORD GERMAN STUDIES","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/00787191.2021.1891777","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41863148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
