The strategies and actions in the management of African River\u0000Basins in a warming climate environment have been studied. Using the Gurara\u0000Reservoir Catchment in North-West Nigeria as a case study, summations were\u0000proposed using hypothetical climate scenarios considering the Global Climate\u0000Models prediction and linear trend of the data. Four (4) proposed scenarios\u0000of temperature increase (1 % and 2 %) coupled with a decrease in\u0000precipitation of (−5 % and −10 %) were combined and applied for the\u0000study area. The Water Evaluation and Planning Tool was used to model and\u0000evaluates the impact of the earth's rising temperature and declining\u0000rainfall on the hydrology and availability of water by investigating its\u0000resilience to climate change. Modelling results indicate a reduction in\u0000available water within the study area from 4.3 % to 3.5 % compared to\u0000the baseline with no climate change scenario, revealing the current water\u0000management strategy as not sustainable, uncoordinated, and resulting in\u0000overexploitation. The comprehension of water level fluctuations and the\u0000sustainability of the Inner Niger River Delta (IND) is a major concern for\u0000the scientific community, but also for the local population. Located in the\u0000centre of Mali, the heart of the Sahel, the delta is characterised by a\u0000floodable area of more than 32 000 km2 during the rainy season, which\u0000contributes very strongly to the vitality of local ecosystem, and is\u0000consequently classified as a Ramsar site under the international Convention\u0000for Wetlands. In addition, the Delta acts as an environmental and\u0000socio-economic development barometer for the entire sub-region. Nowadays, we\u0000can observe an increasing fragility of the delta due to climate change,\u0000desertification and human activities, and justifies the need for permanent\u0000monitoring. The present study is based on the recent successes of radar\u0000altimetry, originally designed to monitor the dynamics topography of the\u0000ocean, and now very frequently used to retrieve inland water levels, of\u0000lakes, rivers, and wetlands. Previous studies evaluated the performances of\u0000several radar altimetry missions including Low Resolution Mode (LRM)\u0000(Topex-Poseidon, Jason-1/2/3, ERS-2, ENVISAT, and SARAL, and Synthetic\u0000Aperture Radar (SAR) Sentinel-3A missions for water level retrievals over\u00001992–2017. A tendency to drought conditions appeared in tropical Africa from\u0000the end of 1960s, also affect the Benoue watershed in central Africa, with a\u0000remarkable persistence in streamflow. Negative breakpoints are found in the\u0000annual hydroclimatic time series of the Benoue catchment at annual time step\u0000in 1970–1971 for rainfall, and in 1971–1972 for discharges. Compared to the\u0000climatological mean (1950–1951 to 2014–2015), the deficits associated with these\u0000negative breakpoints are approximating −2.9 % for rainfall, and −14.2 % for discharges. The wet season shows similar developments. However,\u0000from the 1990s, there has been a significant increase in the mean annual\u0000discharges of the Benoue River, which coincides with that of the rainfall\u0000during the same decade. The maintenance of this increase over the recent\u0000decades could also be expected in response to an increase in impervious\u0000surface areas (ISA) in the catc

Due to global change, cities of the future will have to\u0000deal with more intense runoff and longer drought sequences, in addition to a\u0000growing urban and peri-urban population. French Mediterranean cities, such\u0000as Toulon, are already densely urbanised and exposed to the effects of\u0000global warming. The adaptation of their infrastructures is problematic.\u0000Cities with high development potential, such as Dakar, offer the opportunity\u0000to imagine other solutions for the management of water resources and its\u0000extremes in the context of global change. In particular, it is a question of\u0000managing the flows of water and substances linked to intense runoff events\u0000according to an ecohydrological logic that makes it possible to reduce\u0000environmental risks and increase social and economic benefits. To do this,\u0000we use a hydrologically-based geomatics model (IRIP) that produces\u0000predictive maps of areas of generation, transfer and accumulation of intense\u0000runoff and associated nutrients. This allows us to target effective\u0000intervention areas to reduce risks and increase water resources, for example\u0000by simulating land use change in appropriate locations and at the same time\u0000stimulating specific biological processes. The fundamental principle of\u0000ecohydrology is to balance energy flows with biological metabolic flows at\u0000the sub-catchment scale. The mapping of intense runoff processes is a first\u0000step illustrated in this article for the cities of Toulon and Dakar. This paper investigates links between rainfall variability in the\u0000Ogooué River Basin (ORB) and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in\u0000the Pacific Ocean. Recent hydroclimatology studies of the ORB and\u0000surrounding areas resulting in contrasting conclusions about links between\u0000rainfall variability and ENSO. Thus, to make the issue clearer, this study\u0000investigates the links between ENSO and rainfall in the ORB over the period\u00001940–1999. The principal component analysis of monthly rainfall in the ORB\u0000was done. The temporal mode of the first component corresponds to the\u0000interannual variations of rainfall on the ORB. Also, the pattern of the\u0000spatial mode of the first component shows that the ORB is a homogeneous\u0000hydroclimatic zone. However, no leading mode is significantly correlated to\u0000the ENSO index. A cross-wavelet analysis of the time series of basin-scale\u0000rainfall and the ENSO index was therefore carried out. In many continental databases representing rivers across Africa, information on rivers characteristics (length, width, intermittent or perennial) is often incomplete, and small streams are largely underrepresented. Fortunately, the use of topographic information from digital elevation models (DEMs) provides an opportunity to have more detailed information on rivers, particularly small streams in broad areas. A common approach to extract streams from DEM is to consider as a stream all DEM cells that drain at least a certain upstream surface, commonly known as the minimum contributing area (Amin). This parameter (Amin) is generally defined uniformly over large areas and this independently of the very variable climate and landscape conditions so that the generated streams have a rather uniform spatial distribution. To address this issue, using a 3′′ (approx. 90 m × 90 m) DEM of Burkina Faso, the relationship between Amin and the observed drainage density (Ddobs) was established with satisfactory performance (r2=0.86). In ongoing work, the functional relationship between the observed drainage densities (Ddobs) and environmental variables (lithology, climate, geology, vegetation cover) should allow for the establishment of the relationships between Amin and the environmental variables. This relationship allows for spatially variable Amin values depending on landscape characteristics. Before extracting river networks in Africa, the next step will be to validate or update these relationships in several countries.\u0000
