Physicians worldwide are negatively impacted by the detrimental effects of microaggressions and implicit bias. It is imperative to establish the prevalence specificity of the problem hence the aim of this study is to determine the prevalence, nature and determinants of microaggressions amongst healthcare professionals.</p></div><div><h3>Method</h3><p>The study used an online anonymous survey to collect data including demographics, awareness of the term, experience of microaggression, acts and response. The research findings were analyzed using univariate and multivariate analyses using Chi-square test and binary logistic regression respectively.</p></div><div><h3>Result</h3><p>A total of 443 participants (40.9% males, 59.1% females) included 403 physicians (91%), 21 dentists (4.7%), 15 nurses (3.4%) and 4 pharmacists (0.9%). More than half of the participants (59.8%) were aware of the term micro-aggression. The percentage was significantly higher among respondents from the western region of Saudi Arabia than the Gulf/Middle Eastern countries. Approximately 38.1% of the participants experienced microaggression and more than half (55.62%) did not report experiencing microaggression. The most common form of microaggression was passive-aggressive behavior (80.5%) followed by invalidation of an opinion (73.4%). Among those who experienced microaggression, (12.9%) reported anger as the most predominant emotional response.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>Microaggression is a universal phenomenon. Further research is necessary to determine its prevalence in other countries to establish a comprehensive understanding of its cultural context.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":53212,"journal":{"name":"Medicina de Familia-SEMERGEN","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2023-12-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138474753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Handgrip strength was evaluated with a TKK 5101 digital dynamometer (Takei Scientific Instruments Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan). Relative handgrip strength was estimated by dividing by weight in kilograms. The absolute and relative handgrip strength normative values were estimated through quantile regression models for the percentiles P5, P10, P25, P50, P75, P90 and P95, they were developed independently for each sex; all analyzes were adjusted for the expansion factor.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Absolute handgrip strength values were considerably higher in men (P50 60–64 years = 32.0 kg, P50 >85 years = 18.0 kg) compared to women (P50 60–65 years = 19.0 kg; P50 >85 years = 12.0 kg), in all age groups. Additionally, as age increases in both sexes, there is a decrease in the values of absolute and relative manual grip strength.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>The estimated normative values in the Colombian population were generally lower than those reported in other studies around the world.
