What I attempt to do in this essay is to recapture the double bill by analysing a monophonic and unedited sound-only recording of the performance of Mountain Language on 2 July 2001 and that of the performance of Ashes to Ashes on the same date, both archived in the British Library. I will show 1) how sounds in the performances of the two plays related to one another; and 2) how significant Katie Mitchell’s direction of both plays and Gareth Fry’s sound design for the double bill were at the crossroads of Pinter, performance, and sound.","PeriodicalId":53207,"journal":{"name":"Sound Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":"42 - 63"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76347800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To understand the persistent tension between public social interaction and private undisturbed work in many open-offices today, I argue that we need to account for the perceptual engineering that has been built into its very concept. To do so, I reconstruct the development and reception of Action Office 2, a pioneering and influential open-plan office concept that was launched by manufacturer Herman Miller Inc. in the late 1960s. I show how its designers sought to optimise the office as an informatic system by balancing workers’ experience of exposure and enclosure in the open-plan office. This informatic challenge coincided with a new approach to office acoustics in the 1960s and 1970s that focused on managing intelligibility and improving privacy rather than noise. Examining this “perceptual technic” reveals how noise became an architectonic element that served to optimise and economise a relation between private and public experience of work. Ultimately, I argue, this technic and the sound masking technologies that derive from it have helped sustain both the open-plan office to the present day, but also the tensions underlying it.","PeriodicalId":53207,"journal":{"name":"Sound Studies","volume":"84 1 1","pages":"64 - 84"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76114163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

English Canadian radio drama has historically drawn upon the eeriness of the disembodied voice as an aesthetic object, and it has done so in an outsized fashion when compared with other national contexts. This trope of the disembodied or acousmatic voice draws upon a relationship to place defined by an experience of alienation and the conceits of settler colonialism. In radio, it expresses Canada’s unique relationship to technological mediation, given the central role of technology in major nation-building projects and the anxieties that stem from technologically-mediated economic and cultural imperialism from south of the border. The themes of excess, dislocation, and alienation associated with technological mediation and conveyed in the disembodied voice recur throughout nearly a century of CBC radio dramas. This paper attempts to make sense of this trope through Mark Fisher’s conception of “the eerie” as a distinct aesthetic form. It is a form that is shaped by the larger socio-cultural context within which it operates, but which also inheres with the potential to both reproduce and challenge those socio-cultural underpinnings.","PeriodicalId":53207,"journal":{"name":"Sound Studies","volume":"12 1","pages":"22 - 41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80727680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Morales’ work opens the social and psychic experience of mourning through mediatic dispersal across audio, video, photography, dramatising how mourning’s demands on signification unsettle material and perceptual reality. The exhibition also invites a hemispheric and regional approach to sound art rooted in the borderlands, which links Morales’ decidedly semiotic and transmedial conception of sound art to broader questions about social and political genealogies for its theory and practice.","PeriodicalId":53207,"journal":{"name":"Sound Studies","volume":"15 1","pages":"104 - 113"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86640449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The suit involved a clip on her radio news program, in which she spoke about an ongoing rape case. While she never named the alleged perpetrator, his identity was well known on the street and in social media. He promptly sued Ms. Bah, and won. In this article, I explore this case and activists’ reactions to it, to consider how voice, sound, and listening shape responses to sexual violence. I examine the role of amplification in feminist struggles for gender justice in Guinea and analyse the sound effects of a series of vocal interventions by activists and journalists. My analysis explores how vocal practices, audio technologies, and ways of hearing shape both legal and extra-legal proceedings. As I show, activists strategically sound out their claims in everyday spaces in order to bypass the failures of formal legal systems and create possibilities for more collective, transformative action.","PeriodicalId":53207,"journal":{"name":"Sound Studies","volume":"70 1","pages":"1 - 21"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87964469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
