These cases, which involve different interlocutors, contexts of application, tools and output, are expressed not only in a discursive manner, but also represented in diagrams and visual syntheses of the co-design processes. The analysis was conducted on the basis of shared parameters: project description, year, partners, goals, context, co-design process, stakeholders and output. Starting with a consideration of the key concepts that emerged in the processes under investigation, the paper moves on to present the “MEET – Multifaceted Experiences for Enhancing Territories” project, which relies on the tools of design to enhance elements of the local culture and involve the community. It concludes by identifying good practices and the potential of co-design processes applied to the field of cultural heritage.","PeriodicalId":52184,"journal":{"name":"Strategic Design Research Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42728415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Empirical comparison occurred by way of a case study in a Colombian family business group composed of three companies. A mixed research design was applied, using a questionnaire to measure the use of empathy, as was an in-depth interview, to learn the use of participative design in stakeholder relationships. Results show acceptable use of the empathetic competency, and that the participative approach, characteristic of design, is partially employed, although the upper level of co-creation is not achieved. It is concluded that, if the empathetic competency is not made to form the base of the participative approach, organization relational capital is wasted. Further, companies may improve stakeholder relationships if they are able to apply participative design methodologies, techniques, and tools, as these reduce resistance to change, and improve the work environment, leadership, and productivity.\u0000 ","PeriodicalId":52184,"journal":{"name":"Strategic Design Research Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49146390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These container lashers train in the port training center, OCHA, in order to execute container lashing safely and efficiently. Container lashing is considered labor intensive. Due to the future trends within maritime transportation, the interest in optimized ergonomic training provided for dockworkers rises. A User-Centered Design approach is implemented to gather insights to build a Product-service-system (PSS) solution in a multidisciplinary research context. In order to develop a meaningful PSS, clinical and cultural insights are required. This paper presents the research framework of Design Inclusive Research (DIR) to collect cultural insights from container lashers. Subsequentially, it elaborates on the different stages of DIR to the extent of defining and executing the design tools. For this study, Cultural Probes and user journey maps, in combination with in-depth interviews, are applied to gather, synthesize, and present the information to stakeholders in a validation workshop. The proposed design tools and framework delivered an array of contextual information, leading to a broader understanding of the container lashers’ culture and generating impactful solutions.","PeriodicalId":52184,"journal":{"name":"Strategic Design Research Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48662059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a new conceptualization of Design Management based on the view of design as a “managed process” within organizations (Bruce and Bessant, 2002, p. 38). We employ an expert rating procedure of product design briefs and Exploratory Factor Analysis to derive eleven factors of information elements contained within these document that constitute Design Management: F1 Insights into Customers; F2 Business Model; F3 Product Aesthetics; F4 Authenticity; F5 Symbolic/ Experiential Value; F6 Functional Value; F7 Promotions/ Distribution; F8 Sustainability; F9 Production/ Development; F10 Project Management; F11 Risk/ Safety. Further, we clarify the strategic role of Design Management by relating these factors to measures of firm performance at the product project- and competitive advantage-levels. Our findings are rationalized using the Balanced Score Card for Design Management approach, made up of: (1) Customer Perspective; (2) Process perspective; (3) Learning and Innovation perspective; and (4) Financial perspective. Our results confirm the overwhelmingly positive relationship between Design Management and firm performance and highlights the differential effects of individual factors across the two measures.","PeriodicalId":52184,"journal":{"name":"Strategic Design Research Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48904475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of the Life-Saving Lullabies project is to define and develop a zero-cost, innovation service strategy that is responsive to current maternal child health needs (MCH). The study is supported by St John Zambia (SJZ) and their volunteers who provide MCH services on behalf of the Ministry of Health. Until now, the potential for extending the functional purpose of lullaby lyrics as a methodological tool for delivering essential knowledge has been overlooked. The rationale for using song has evidence to support it. Studies show that singing lullabies promotes mother/ baby attachment (Creighton et al., 2013) and reduces prenatal stress and anxiety (Carolan, 2012). This study explores the potential of song as a culture heritage tool for imparting critical MCH knowledge and skills. Central to this, is our human-centred design approach (Design Council, 2005) that foregrounds the everyday experiences of young women. The research demonstrates the value of cultural heritage tools in enabling non-professionals as an untapped resource. A total of 31 MCH songs have been created.","PeriodicalId":52184,"journal":{"name":"Strategic Design Research Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47614768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, this topic has received little attention from design and HCI scholars. The lack of tools to assess and measure immersion in the Web may severely limit our ability to understand the nature of such experience, thereby constraining future research in the area. To address this issue, we designed a questionnaire for assessing immersive websites and conducted a preliminary evaluation on it. In this article, we outline the questionnaire design and report on findings from a preliminary study conducted to analyse its reliability and validity. Moreover, we present results from Factor Analysis performed to investigate the dimensionality of the instrument. Finally, we conclude by discussing the implications of our findings, along with limitations of the study and future work.","PeriodicalId":52184,"journal":{"name":"Strategic Design Research Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44448497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particularly within the boundaries of Design, the way of thinking through scenarios has been incorporated into design methods to explore future contexts at certain points in the design process. However, we question whether scenario thinking could be an integral approach during the project's lifetime structuring a design technology through comprehensive and systemic mechanisms. Therefore, the present work aimed to share the research of a Design Technology by Scenarios and its application in a design workshop entitled Memories of the Future. The project network was formed by the “Protagonists of the Future,” a group movement orchestrated by the Santa Maria Development Agency supported by UN-Habitat to promote urban development in a sustainable and collaborative way. The results indicate that the co-creation of scenarios as a design technology resignified the actions of the protagonists in the local ecosystem encompassing multiple dimensions: the history and purpose of the project (story); the path necessary to achieve the goals of sustainable development in the city (path); the roles to be performed by the different protagonists involved (actors); and tangible results in the participating communities (evidences).Keywords: design methods, scenario thinking, design-driven innovation, participatory design.","PeriodicalId":52184,"journal":{"name":"Strategic Design Research Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43460492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
