We develop the concept of entropy (coming from scalar conservation laws) in order to analyze singularities of such vector fields. In particular, based on entropies, we characterize lower semicontinuous line-energies in 2D and we study by Γ-convergence method the associated regularizing models (like the 2D Aviles–Giga and the 3D Bloch wall models). We also present some applications to the analysis of pattern formation in micromagnetics. In particular, we describe domain walls in the thin ferromagnetic films (e.g. symmetric Neel walls, asymmetric Neel walls, asymmetric Bloch walls) together with interior and boundary vortices.","PeriodicalId":52130,"journal":{"name":"Confluentes Mathematici","volume":"11 1","pages":"1230001"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84082104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our main result is the link between the abstract parameterized Galois theories, that give information on the differential properties of abstract solutions of $q$-difference equations, and the properties of meromorphic solutions of such equations. Notice that a linear $q$-difference equation with meromorphic coefficients always admits a basis of meromorphic solutions, as proven by Praagman.","PeriodicalId":52130,"journal":{"name":"Confluentes Mathematici","volume":"99 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74818839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

L'article s'adresse d'abord et avant tout a des mathematiciens ou physiciens mathematiciens connaissant les arguments de base de la theorie perturbative des champs, et souhaitant connaitre un cadre general dans lequel ils peuvent etre rendus rigoureux. Il fournit egalement un apercu d'une serie d'articles recents [50, 51] visant a donner une definition constructive des chemins rugueux et du calcul stochastique fractionnaire. We develop in this article the principal constructive arguments used in quantum field theory, limiting us to bosonic theories, for which there does not exist any recent general presentation. The article is primarily written for mathematicians or mathematical physicists knowing the basic arguments of quantum field theory, and desiring to discover a general framework in which they can be made rigorous. It also provides a glimpse of a recent series of articles [50, 51] whose aim is to give a constructive definition of rough paths and fractionary stochastic calculus.","PeriodicalId":52130,"journal":{"name":"Confluentes Mathematici","volume":"79 1","pages":"1240004"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79242139","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Let us recall two results. (1) If X is compact, the compact set |f|(X) is a polytope of the ℝ-vector space (we use the multiplicative notation); this is due to Berkovich in the locally algebraic case (his proof made use of de Jong's alterations), and has been extended to the general case by the author. The locally algebraic case could also have been deduced quite formally from a former result by Bieri and Groves, based upon explicit computations on Newton polygons. (2) If moreover X is Hausdorff and n-dimensional, and if φ denotes the morphism induced by f, then the pre-image of the skeleton Sn of under φ has a piecewise-linear structure making φ-1(Sn) → Sn a piecewise immersion; this is due to the author, and his proof also made use of de Jong's alterations. In this article, we improve (1) and (2), and give new proofs of both of them. Our proofs are based upon the model theory of algebraically closed, nontrivially valued fields and do not involve de Jong's alterations. Let us quickly explain what we mean by improving (1) and (2). • Concerning (1), we also prove that if x ∈ X, there exists a compact analytic neighborhood U of x, such that for every compact analytic neighborhood V of x in X, the germs of polytopes (|f|(V), |f|(x)) and (|f|(U), |f|(x)) coincide. • Concerning (2), we prove that the piecewise linear structure on φ-1(Sn) is canonical, that is, does not depend on the map we choose to write it as a pre-image of the skeleton; we thus answer a question which was asked to us by Temkin. Moreover, we prove that the pre-image of the skeleton \"stabilizes after a finite, separable ground field extension\", and that if φ1,…,φm are finitely many morphisms from X to , the union also inherits a canonical piecewise-linear structure.","PeriodicalId":52130,"journal":{"name":"Confluentes Mathematici","volume":"52 1","pages":"1250007"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90987777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cochlear fluid is treated as linear, incompressible, and inviscid. The cochlear partition is treated as a massless thin plate loaded by the fluid. This model is then reformulated by analytically removing the fluid variable with the use of a Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator. The resulting fifth-order nonlocal PDE for the motion of the partition is simulated using a novel implicit numerical scheme. Simulations demonstrate that this model exhibits traveling wave characteristics and a clear place principle. Asymptotic analysis in the small aspect ratio of the cochlea is performed on the given model equations with energetic concerns in mind. The results of simulations along with these asymptotic arguments suggest a relationship between the form and function of the cochlea which we compare to physiological data.","PeriodicalId":52130,"journal":{"name":"Confluentes Mathematici","volume":"78 7 1","pages":"523-541"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87922105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By substituting the fully nonlinear Monge–Ampere equation for the linear Poisson equation to model gravitation, we introduce a modified mathematical model (\"Monge-Ampere gravitation/MAG\"), for which the Zeldovich approximation becomes exact. The MAG model enjoys a least action principle in which we can input mass concentration effects in a canonical way, based on the theory of gradient flows with convex potentials and somewhat related to the concept of self-dual Lagrangians developed by Ghoussoub [29]. A fully discrete algorithm is introduced for the EUR problem in one space dimension.","PeriodicalId":52130,"journal":{"name":"Confluentes Mathematici","volume":"14 1","pages":"361-385"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80141668","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
