However, rapid growth in LIBs usage has caused a parallel surge in end-of-life batteries, presenting environmental and resource recovery challenges. Among the various components, such as cathode, anode, electrolyte, separators, of LIBs, electrolyte has received minimal attention in recycling efforts. Electrolytes, characterized by their flammable, toxic, and volatile nature, pose significant environmental hazards, including the release of harmful gases and pollutants during disposal. This review focuses on the critical need for efficient recovery and reutilization of electrolytes from spent LIBs. Various recovery methods, including solvent extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, pyrolysis, and freezing, are studied for their effectiveness, efficiency, and environmental impact. Additionally, methods for recycling and regenerating recovered electrolytes into high-purity components for direct reuse are explored, addressing economic and sustainability considerations. Finally, major challenges and research gaps have been discussed. Key research gaps include the degradation of electrolytes during battery operation, complex composition of spent electrolytes, and economic feasibility of large-scale recovery technologies.</p>","PeriodicalId":520825,"journal":{"name":"Waste management & research : the journal of the International Solid Wastes and Public Cleansing Association, ISWA","volume":" ","pages":"1681-1702"},"PeriodicalIF":4.3,"publicationDate":"2026-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148311324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Adriatic-Ionian region provides a critical testing ground to assess whether economic growth continues to translate into higher municipal waste generation or whether meaningful decoupling has begun to emerge. This paper examines the extent to which municipal waste generation is driven by economic development between 2008 and 2023, and whether the underlying drivers differ between EU Member States and Western Balkan countries. Using a balanced panel of eight countries, the analysis combines fixed-effects econometric modelling with a decoupling assessment and a regional interaction approach. Results indicate that, once country-specific and time-specific factors are accounted for, economic growth alone does not systematically increase municipal waste generation. In contrast, environmental protection expenditure consistently reduces waste levels, underscoring the central role of policy effort. The analysis also reveals pronounced regional differences. These findings are directly relevant to SDG 12 and offer actionable evidence for three domains of application: (1) for EU cohesion and pre-accession policy design, supporting the case for prioritising environmental funding in Western Balkan countries; (2) for macro regional governance under European Union Strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian Region (EUSAIR), where the evidence of distinct waste growth regimes calls for differentiated decoupling strategies; and (3) for national waste management planning, where investments in environmental awareness and tertiary education should complement infrastructure development to accelerate waste prevention.</p>","PeriodicalId":520825,"journal":{"name":"Waste management & research : the journal of the International Solid Wastes and Public Cleansing Association, ISWA","volume":" ","pages":"1789-1804"},"PeriodicalIF":4.3,"publicationDate":"2026-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148146091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast to many studies in the literature that focus primarily on compliance with emission limit values or the analysis of single parameters, this study proposes a benchmarking approach based on normalized performance indicators referenced to unit production (kg ADt<sup>-1</sup>, kg t<sup>-1</sup>) and encompassing the entire upstream-downstream chain. The analytical framework developed integrates key environmental indicators-water and energy consumption, emissions to water (chemical oxygen demand, adsorbable organic halogens), and sludge generation-thereby enabling a comprehensive, system-oriented assessment consistent with the Best Available Techniques Reference Document (BAT/BREF) framework and CEPI recommendations. The analysis of four case studies demonstrates that the investigated plants operate within CEPI reference ranges; however, the dispersion of key performance indicators reveals considerable scope for further optimization. The results indicate that upstream factors, including bleaching intensity and recovered fiber quality, exert a stronger influence on total pollutant loads and sludge generation than effluent concentrations alone. Downstream treatment processes achieve comparable pollutant removal efficiencies; however, the associated environmental costs, in terms of energy and chemical consumption, are strongly dependent on wastewater characteristic. The findings also confirm the presence of cross-media effects, whereby reductions in emissions to water may lead to increased sludge production or higher energy demand, thereby underscoring the need for integrated, system-level optimization.</p>","PeriodicalId":520825,"journal":{"name":"Waste management & research : the journal of the International Solid Wastes and Public Cleansing Association, ISWA","volume":" ","pages":"734242X261472583"},"PeriodicalIF":4.3,"publicationDate":"2026-09-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"149032992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From the perspective of social information processing theory, this study explores these issues by examining the handwritten effect (vs machine-written) of environmental slogans in scenic spots on tourists' perceptual fluency, ecological concern, information seeking, and environmental attitudes. First, this study conducted four experiments (<i>N</i> = 1134) to expand knowledge about handwritten effect and tourists' environmental behaviors, by examining the impact of handwritten fonts in environmental slogans in scenic spots on tourists' garbage sorting intention. Second, it was found that an addition of handwritten fonts to environmental slogans in scenic spots effectively enhanced tourists' garbage sorting intention. Latest, ecological concern and information seeking continuously mediated the handwritten effect of environmental slogans in scenic spots. The results showed that environmental slogans with handwritten fonts in scenic spots with had a stronger impact on individuals with high environmental attitudes. This study provides new insights into environmental sustainability and the selection of fonts for printing environmental slogans in scenic areas.</p>","PeriodicalId":520825,"journal":{"name":"Waste management & research : the journal of the International Solid Wastes and Public Cleansing Association, ISWA","volume":" ","pages":"734242X261477169"},"PeriodicalIF":4.3,"publicationDate":"2026-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"149027461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although BF is often discarded, it is already available in loose fibrous form and can provide pre-colored feedstock when collected from dyed fabrics. Unlike previous studies primarily exploring BF-integrated ring-spun yarns or mechanically recycled BFs, this study investigates the direct use of unrecycled, pre-colored BF waste in rotor-spun yarn production without intermediate steps. Droppings-1 (D1) waste and 100% virgin cotton rotor yarn were used as comparative benchmarks. A full-factorial design, Taguchi optimization, and regression modeling were applied to evaluate effects of yarn count, waste type, and blend ratio on yarn unevenness (coefficient of mass variation (CVm%)), imperfection index (IPI), hairiness, tensile strength, elongation, and reisskilometer (RKM). The results showed that 100% virgin cotton yarns had the best overall performance. D1 blends showed good evenness and mechanical properties with limited quality loss, whereas BF blends produced acceptable rotor yarns with moderately higher CVm%, IPI, hairiness, and slightly lower tensile properties due to their shorter fiber length. However, BF provided a distinct pre-colored mélange appearance, reducing the need for additional dyeing. Regression models described the main yarn responses well, with adjusted <i>R</i><sup>2</sup> values ranging from 0.326 to 0.862; the models for IPI and breaking force showed only moderate fit. Taguchi analysis identified waste type as the most influential factor affecting yarn quality. Direct use of pre-colored BF waste can avoid additional mechanical recycling and dyeing steps, with indicative, literature-based estimates of approximately 1559 L water, 4.8 kWh energy and 2.2 kg CO₂-eq per kg of virgin cotton replaced.. These findings establish a simplified textile-to-textile recycling route that produced value-added rotor-spun mélange yarns.</p>","PeriodicalId":520825,"journal":{"name":"Waste management & research : the journal of the International Solid Wastes and Public Cleansing Association, ISWA","volume":" ","pages":"734242X261481277"},"PeriodicalIF":4.3,"publicationDate":"2026-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"149019541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study evaluated whether smaller mechanically milled RH particles increase methane production during batch co-digestion with cow paunch content. Rice husk was milled and separated into four particle-size fractions: 0-125 µm (F1), >125-250 µm (F2), >250-500 µm (F3), and >500-1180 µm (F4). Batch biomethane potential assays were conducted under mesophilic conditions for 126 days using cow paunch content as inoculum and co-substrate. Particle-size distribution, substrate composition, cumulative methane yield, biodegradability index, pH, volatile solids, and total solids removal were assessed. F1 produced the highest cumulative methane yield (311 ± 2.7 mL CH<sub>4</sub>/g VS), followed by F2 (289 ± 2.5 mL CH<sub>4</sub>/g VS), F4 (262 ± 9.08 mL CH<sub>4</sub>/g VS), the control (230 ± 4.3 mL CH<sub>4</sub>/g VS) and F3 (134 ± 0.3 mL CH<sub>4</sub>/g VS). Relative to the control, F1, F2 and F4 increased methane yield by approximately 35%, 26% and 14%, respectively, whereas F3 showed lower conversion. The final digestate pH (7.39-7.62), volatile solids removal and biodegradability indices indicated stable digestion for most treatments. The findings support the hypothesis that RH particle-size reduction can enhance methane recovery during co-digestion with cow paunch content, although the F3 outcome indicates that particle size alone does not determine process performance. Thus, energy-use and cost assessments are needed before scale-up.</p>","PeriodicalId":520825,"journal":{"name":"Waste management & research : the journal of the International Solid Wastes and Public Cleansing Association, ISWA","volume":" ","pages":"734242X261472601"},"PeriodicalIF":4.3,"publicationDate":"2026-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"149019521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The primary objective of this study is to investigate the attitudes, behaviours, perceptions, and awareness regarding CB littering using a questionnaire-based survey and to develop evidence-based policy recommendations. The survey was conducted in Aizawl, Mizoram, India, specifically considering the city's socio-demographics, with a very high prevalence of cigarette consumption, and is often termed the cancer capital of India. A total of 808 responses were analyzed, focusing on demographic characteristics, smoking habits, knowledge and beliefs about CBs, littering behaviours, disposal methods, and awareness of potential solutions. A key finding reveals a disconnect between general environmental awareness and specific knowledge, where a substantial portion of the population mistakenly believes CBs are biodegradable. This misconception is the strongest predictor of littering behaviour (OR = 18.83). The survey found that littering is affected by insufficient disposal infrastructure, convenience, and a high degree of desensitization to litter, with males having significantly higher littering rates than females (OR = 2.042). The findings provide a data-driven imperative for Aizawl to move beyond traditional anti-littering efforts. Policy recommendations focus on a holistic strategy that integrates targeted communication to address specific misconceptions about biodegradability, the strategic placement of engaging, fire-proof waste infrastructure in high-littering hotspots, and a phased, localized approach to waste valorization. This study provides policymakers with actionable insights to mitigate CB littering and promote a more sustainable community.</p>","PeriodicalId":520825,"journal":{"name":"Waste management & research : the journal of the International Solid Wastes and Public Cleansing Association, ISWA","volume":" ","pages":"734242X261486622"},"PeriodicalIF":4.3,"publicationDate":"2026-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"149019544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four waste recycling scenarios, namely the no cost-sharing contract scenario, the polluter-pays scenario, the third-party pays scenario, and the centralized decision-making scenario, are considered, and the four scenarios are solved, analyzed, and simulated. The results show that: (1) in the absence of government subsidies, both polluter-pays contracts and third-party pays contracts are effective in increasing system utility and achieving pareto improvements. (2) The polluter pays contract is established on the premise that the environmental liability coefficient of the SM-LPF needs to reach a certain threshold, and the third-party pays for the recycling contract is established on the condition that the spillover effect of cleaner production reaches a certain threshold. (3) Government subsidies can provide incentives and coordinate the interests of the waste recycling system, and the size of the optimal subsidy coefficients of the government for the SM-LPF and the third-party firms is related to the positions of the two parties in the structure of the game.
