They are what drive us to address the challenges in the healthcare systems of the 10 Canadian provinces and three territories, including equitable access to quality healthcare for all. As nurses, we know that the people in this country depend on us to be there for them and their families when they need our care, often at some of the most difficult and frightening times in their lives. An aging population and increasing comorbidities among patients highlight the urgent need for integration. Barriers such as historical separation of physical and mental health services, workforce limitations and stigma persist, yet societal attitudes are shifting to be more aware and accepting of mental health conditions. Historically trained as generalists, today's nurses are often thrust into highly specialized roles without the formal training or recognition to match the complexity of their practice. The prevailing perception - \"a nurse is a nurse\" - undermines recognition of the diverse roles and competencies within the profession. Specialty nursing certification, while proven to improve outcomes, remains underutilized and undervalued in Canada. For the healthcare system to thrive, nurse executives across all sectors must become vocal champions of specialty nursing certification. Doing so is not only a professional imperative but also a strategic necessity for optimizing patient outcomes, ensuring workforce sustainability and achieving better value.</p>","PeriodicalId":520294,"journal":{"name":"Nursing leadership (Toronto, Ont.)","volume":"38 1","pages":"7-14"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144850313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We begin the year with significant and persistent health and healthcare challenges. Recently released data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information indicate that 5.4 million Canadians aged 18 years and older (17%) report not having access to a regular healthcare provider (CIHI 2024a). Mental health concerns are on the rise and made worse by intersections with gender and other social determinants of health, with many people experiencing delays in care or not receiving it at all (CIHI 2024b). Emergency departments are overburdened as more and more Canadians seek care there for conditions that could have been managed in primary care (CIHI 2024a). The social determinants of health have worsened as the cost of living has skyrocketed (Park 2024) along with gender-based violence and structurally embedded and pervasive racism (Government of Canada 2024a, 2024b).</p>","PeriodicalId":520294,"journal":{"name":"Nursing leadership (Toronto, Ont.)","volume":"37 3","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143044051","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A Rapid Review (Walker et al. 2025). I want to begin by congratulating the authors on completing a rapid review on a very important topic. As the authors note, \"The profession of nursing has an obligation to carefully self-examine so it does not further contribute to systemic racism\" (Walker et al. 2025: 30). A key strength of the review is the naming and description of key concepts. I also appreciate the limitation noted by the authors in that the method could, in itself, be a limitation as it reflects a synthesis of a particular approach to knowledge and thus may restrict the overall understanding of this issue. It is in this spirit that I offer my perspective, recognizing that it is informed by my identity as a South Asian nurse and healthcare leader. Through this commentary, I want to make three key points that I hope will go beyond the awareness of problematization to deeper opportunities for action.</p>","PeriodicalId":520294,"journal":{"name":"Nursing leadership (Toronto, Ont.)","volume":"37 3","pages":"45-47"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143044049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
