In this study, we investigated the degradation of ALB in soil and its bioaccumulation in earthworms, changes in the microbiome and degradation genes, and the effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles on the degradation and enrichment behaviors of ALB and microbial community structure and function. Our findings showed that ALB selectively enriched specific albendazole degradation genes (i.e., hmr and ami) in the earthworm, preferentially activating the pathways associated with sulfur reduction, amination of ALB sulfone, and hydroxylation of ALB. Metagenomic analysis revealed that the relative abundances of ppo, xylA, cutC, and nfsl in the earthworm gut were 0.19-52.64-fold higher in the ALB treatment than in the control, indicating their potential dominance in ALB biodegradation. Network analysis further identified potential bacterial hosts carrying biodegradation genes and albendazole degradation genes. Notably, Sphaerobacter, Saccharothrix, Actinomadura, and Nocardia were recognized as potential dual hosts of biodegradation genes and albendazole degradation genes, displaying a 0.05-1.32-fold elevation in relative abundance in ALB-treated earthworm guts compared to the control. Additionally, ZnO nanoparticles were found to reduce ALB bioaccumulation in earthworms and accelerate its dissipation in soil. These findings provide novel insights into the bioremediation mechanisms of pesticides in soil-earthworm ecosystems.</p>","PeriodicalId":519973,"journal":{"name":"Crop health","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12972218/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147392049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although this promotes the generation of alternate sources of \"clean\" energy that does not harm the environment, potential concerns regarding soil and water pollution with microplastics and multiple rare heavy metals (HMs) used in NPPs usually do not grab the required attention. The group of rare HMs comprises of uranium, cadmium, mercury, cobalt, germanium, and indium, which are known ecological toxins affecting agricultural quality and consumer safety. When expunged as nuclear waste discharges, these rare HMs adsorb to the surface of microplastics and together pollute the adjacent cultivable lands and water sources used for irrigation. Microplastics increase the phyto-availability of the HMs, which mimic micronutrient elements and are actively transported into root cells via calcium, iron, zinc, copper, or other HM transporters. The toxicants are then translocated to aerial biomass and reproductive or storage organs via the symplastic or apoplastic routes. Humans or animals consuming such contaminated crops and vegetables can develop irreversible neurological and physiological disorders, including cancers. Plant growth regulators like abscisic acid, gibberellic acid, and nitric oxide have been found to synchronize the stress-adaptive signaling in crops, although the sensitive genotypes ultimately succumb to oxidative injuries. To abate such ecological and economic loss, remote sensing can be used to avoid contaminated areas or bio(phyto)remediation can be performed to depollute contaminated landscapes and water bodies. Genetically engineered, tolerant crops can also be cultivated directly, with lower yield loss.</p>","PeriodicalId":519973,"journal":{"name":"Crop health","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12936335/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147286897","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given their seed-borne transmission characteristics, quarantine status and destructive hazards, rapid, super-sensitive, highly specific on-site detection technologies are urgently needed. Here, using B. glumae Os48 and B. plantarii ZJ171 as immunogens, we prepared two highly specific and ultra-sensitive monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against B. glumae (4A7 and 8C5) and two highly specific and ultra-sensitive mAbs against B. plantarii (12B5 and 14B3). We then developed dot-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (Dot-ELISA) and colloidal gold immunochromatographic strip (CGICS) assays for detecting B. glumae and B. plantarii with the prepared mAbs as the detection antibodies. These developed mAb-based serological techniques enabled the rapid, broad-spectrum, and specific detection of B. glumae and B. plantarii, respectively, and showed no cross-reaction with other control plant bacteria included in the analysis. Moreover, the detection limits of the Dot-ELISAs for B. glumae or B. plantarii were up to 1.96 × 10<sup>4</sup> colony-forming units (CFU)/mL, and CGICSs could detect B. glumae and B. plantarii at concentrations as low as 9.78 × 10<sup>3</sup> CFU/mL. Surprisingly, these two serological techniques are 2 ~ 8 times more sensitive than conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Collectively, the two newly developed serological techniques in this work provide two simple, rapid, broad-spectrum, highly specific, ultra-sensitive and on-site means to detect B. glumae and B. plantarii in rice grains and leaves, thereby offering reliable and practical tools for the detection and quarantine of these two RBPB pathogens.</p>","PeriodicalId":519973,"journal":{"name":"Crop health","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12936288/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147286951","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Desiccation-tolerant (orthodox) seeds, representative of most crop species, possess the ability to survive programmed drying during maturation, thereby entering a metabolically inactive state. This anhydrobiotic state serves to prolong embryo viability and shield against adverse environmental conditions. While programmed drying is essential for seed preservation, it can result in oxidative and macromolecular damage, which is exacerbated by fluctuations in temperature and humidity during storage. Consequently, this cumulative damage to deoxyribonucleic acid, proteins, and cellular structures can jeopardize seed viability if not adequately repaired. Seed longevity is therefore dependent not merely on passive resistance by molecular stabilizers but on an active repair mechanism that is initiated upon rehydration. The interplay between redox homeostasis, damage repair, and cellular protective proteins forms the cornerstone of seed longevity, helping seeds retain their ability to germinate. This review delves into the converging roles of redox homeostasis, repair, and protective proteins in governing the longevity of seeds. By unraveling how these components cooperate and communicate, we gain deeper insights into the natural strategies that seeds employ to delay aging. Exploring the molecular underpinnings of seed longevity offers substantial novel genetic targets for developing crops with improved resistance to evolving climates and provides crucial insights for the conservation of plant germplasm.</p>","PeriodicalId":519973,"journal":{"name":"Crop health","volume":"4 1","pages":"3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12858711/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"146134011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, using Botryoschaeria dothidea (B. dothidea), the causal agent of apple ring rot, as the target organism, we systematically characterized the pleiotropic functions of BdAreA (GATA-type zinc-finger transcription factor AreA of B. dothidea) through targeted gene knockout. Phenotypic analysis showed that conidiation production was inhibited in ΔBdAreA, and its pathogenicity was significantly attenuated. In addition, the mutant exhibited sensitivity to both hydrogen peroxide and phytoalexins. Notably, BdAreA specifically regulated the utilization of nitrate (NO₃⁻), and combined real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) and enzyme activity assays confirmed that it positively regulates both the transcriptional level and catalytic activity of nitrate reductase (BdNR) and nitrite reductase (BdNIR) of B. dothidea. More importantly, this study revealed for the first time that BdAreA negatively regulates the expression of BdHog1 and affects its phosphorylation level. This review integrates recent advances on how nematode effectors, such as CLEs, CEPs, RALFs, IDA, and PSYs, are processed, post-translationally modified, and trafficked to hijack host signaling and developmental programs. By linking structural mimicry with receptor engagement and subcellular targeting, we highlight how these effectors reprogram plant transcriptional and immune responses to drive the formation of nematode feeding sites. We further explore the evolutionary origins of these effectors, emphasizing how processes such as horizontal gene transfer, neofunctionalization, and convergent selection have shaped peptide effectors into lineage-specific virulence factors. Finally, we outline critical research gaps focusing on structural and computational analyses of effector-receptor interfaces, functional genomics of trafficking and activation and translational opportunities for engineering durable host resistance. Together, these insights underscore the influence of molecular mimicry on nematode virulence and position effector biology as a frontier for translational innovation in crop protection.</p>","PeriodicalId":519973,"journal":{"name":"Crop health","volume":"4 1","pages":"1"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12825991/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"146133998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although both genomes have been widely used for phylogenetic tree reconstruction, topological discordances between trees inferred from mitochondrial and nuclear genomes-referred to as mito-nuclear phylogenetic discordance-have been widely reported. In this study, we analyzed the mitochondrial and nuclear genomic data from 472 insects and systematically investigated the impact of gene properties on the mito-nuclear phylogenetic tree discordance. Our analyses revealed that this discordance was not attributed to most examined factors, such as gene length and gene tree resolution, with the exception of guanine-cytosine content (GC%). We found that the mitochondrial genes exhibited significantly lower GC% compared to the nuclear genes. Further analyses revealed that the mito-nuclear phylogenetic discordance can be reduced by sampling mito-like nuclear genes that possess a similar GC content to that of mitochondrial genes. Moreover, we found that within nuclear genomes, low-GC nuclear genes are more topologically similar to each other and exhibit different biological functions than high-GC nuclear genes. In 2024, under the organization of National Agricultural Technology Extension Service Center, the contribution rates of controlling pests (diseases, insect pests and weeds) on these crops to their production were evaluated in 15 provinces of the country. In each province, five control treatments for the pests were set up at different locations, including strict control, unified control, traditional farmer control, no control of diseases or insect pests, and no control of diseases, insect pests or weeds. In the plots of each treatment, yields and losses were measured and compared between treatments. The results revealed that the average contribution rate of pest control in China in 2024 was 30.56% for the three crops, reaching 27.99%, 35.62% and 28.63% for wheat, rice and maize, respectively, and the recovered yield losses were 39.21, 73.92, and 84.43 million tons, respectively, totaling nearly 198 million tons. The contribution rate was higher when the pests were controlled under strict guidelines and when the control was complemented in a unified form than when the pests were controlled via methods freely adopted by farmers. In recent decades, advanced analytical techniques, such as gas chromatography-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD), have enabled the identification of key semiochemicals that regulate parasitoid behavior. Notably, studies on Campoletis chlorideae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) have elucidated the mechanisms of sex pheromone communication, advancing our understanding of pheromonal signaling in parasitoids. Moreover, plant-derived synomones and host-derived kairomones serve as pivotal chemical cues for host location, underpinning tritrophic (plant-pest-parasitoid) interactions. The functional characterization of olfactory receptors tuned to herbivore-induced plant volatiles and kairomones, achieved through ectopic expression systems, has further clarified the molecular mechanism underlying semiochemical-mediated behaviors. Synthetic biology offers promising avenues for manipulating parasitoid behavior by leveraging genetic and metabolic engineering of plants and yeast to release critical synomones and kairomones, thereby improving parasitoid recruitment. The endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia is commonly found in these insects, where it regulates reproduction through mechanisms such as cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) and increased fertility. In this review, we discuss the strain-specific effects of Wolbachia: wLug (in N. lugens, < 50% infection) increases fecundity without CI; wStri (in L. striatellus, 99% infection) induces complete CI and enhances reproduction; and wSfur (in S. furcifera, 90% infection) shows weak or no CI with minimal fecundity effects. Additionally, while wStri can induce CI in N. lugens, its intensity is reduced, suggesting that both the symbiont and the host influence CI strength. The wStri genome contains three copies of the CI factors cifA-cifB, which belong to a newly identified group of genes of unknown function. In L. striatellus, the host protein cytoplasmic aminopeptidase-like protein (CAL) is associated with CI lethality, whereas the NADH quinone oxidoreductase subunit A8 (NDUFA8) may play a role in CI \"rescue\". Furthermore, Wolbachia enhances rice planthopper reproduction through B vitamin synthesis, the upregulation of vitellogenin (Vg), and the promotion of germ cell division, significantly increasing egg production.
