In Brazil, universities stand out as the main patent depositors, being important actors in the country's technological development process. The objective of this study is to present the profile of researchers from Brazilian universities and the motivational factors that lead them to patent the results of their research. Based on a literature review, 27 factors were identified, which were classified according to the nature of motivation and expected results. Data from curricula vitae were collected to verify the researchers' academic and sociodemographic profile. A survey was conducted to measure the importance attributed to different motivational factors. The results show that, in addition to the royalties established in Brazilian legislation, universities need to provide other conditions and incentives to engage more researchers in patenting and licensing activities. Therefore, this study can provide subsidies for the formulation of policies aimed at promoting innovation and technology transfer in Brazilian universities.

","PeriodicalId":51794,"journal":{"name":"World Patent Information","volume":"75 ","pages":"Article 102241"},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2023-10-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0172219023000716/pdfft?md5=3028a03b5ed57c9285c8d6ba6fa7938b&pid=1-s2.0-S0172219023000716-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91987541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The quantities of articles (TRL3), academic patents (TRL4), and non-academic patents (TRL5) within 45 food fields from 2000 to 2019 were analyzed. Brazil's TRL stands at TRL3-4 with a bottleneck at TRL5, while the USA has reached TRL4-5. Thus, patents' compound annual growth rate, specialization, concentration, diversification, inequality, revealed technologic advantage and distance were calculated, as well as their convergence/divergence over time were calculated. Brazilian academic food technologies grew at an order of magnitude above other sectors. Specialization is higher in the USA than in Brazil, with non-academic sectors displaying greater specialization and divergence, while academic sectors are converging. Brazil's competitive technologies focus on low-tech fields, like seafood, dairy, and preserves, primarily targeting the domestic market and leveraging biodiversity. Conversely, the USA excels in high-tech fields such as new plants, microorganisms and enzymes for food, and nutritional enhancements. These findings emphasize the necessity for strategic initiatives aimed at bridging the technological gap, aligning Brazil's non-academic food technology with SDG2, and effectively addressing food security challenges.

","PeriodicalId":51794,"journal":{"name":"World Patent Information","volume":"75 ","pages":"Article 102240"},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2023-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91987547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, patent documents offer limited insights into a technology’s full potential. As a solution, this study suggests an approach to explore a technology’s applicability beyond what is explicitly stated in patents. The approach employs causal extraction to extract sentences expressing technologies and their applications from patents, followed by deep learning-based similarity analysis to compare the similarity of these sentences. Experimental results show its effectiveness in extracting sentences about technologies and applications and its superiority in terms of F1 score compared to benchmark models. This study enables cross-domain comparisons of technologies and applications, identifies multiple prospective applications for a given technology, and offers new opportunities for patent value analysis and intellectual property management in the industry. One major challenge is to increase efficiency and decrease the risk of developing new successful products. We want to reach these goals by improving the reusability of already existing knowledge elements extracted from e.g., already existing (sub-)systems or their documentation. These elements are called reference system elements and are meant to be the starting point for product development projects. Based on a systematic literature review complemented by an expert workshop and analysis of established methods and tools in product engineering, we developed the Reference System Elements Identification Atlas to support the identification of suiting reference system elements. Within the Reference System Elements Identification Atlas, we collected 30 methods and tools to identify reference system elements and allocated them to the various knowledge spaces they search. All 30 methods and tools were grouped in five clusters – creativity methods, data analysis methods, market/competition analysis methods, similarity methods, and trend analysis methods. We observed that methods and tools are hardly related to the identification of reference system elements in literature explicitly. We believe the Reference System Elements Identification Atlas provides valuable support to collect valuable reference system elements as the starting point in product engineering.

","PeriodicalId":51794,"journal":{"name":"World Patent Information","volume":"75 ","pages":"Article 102239"},"PeriodicalIF":2.7,"publicationDate":"2023-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49733753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This manual, intellectually demanding task needs to be supported or even fully automated by classification systems that will classify patent applications, hopefully with an accuracy close to patent professionals.
