{"title":"The Effect of Multicultural Acceptance on Social Problem Solving Among University Students","authors":"Oan Na Lee, Chiang-Soon Song","doi":"10.1002/jmcd.12222","DOIUrl":"10.1002/jmcd.12222","url":null,"abstract":"<p>This study examined the effect of multicultural acceptance on social problem solving in a sample of 159 university students in South Korea. A simple regression analysis revealed that multicultural acceptance significantly predicted social problem solving. Specifically, multicultural acceptance positively predicted positive problem orientation and rational problem solving. On the other hand, multicultural acceptance negatively predicted negative problem orientation, impulsivity-carelessness style, and avoidance style. The limitations and implications of the results are discussed.</p><p>Este estudio examinó el efecto de la aceptación multicultural sobre la resolución de problemas sociales en una muestra de 159 estudiantes universitarios en Corea del Sur. Un análisis de regresión simple reveló que la aceptación multicultural predijo significativamente la resolución de problemas sociales. Concretamente, la aceptación multicultural predijo de forma positiva una orientación positiva hacia los problemas y una resolución racional de los mismos. Por otra parte, la aceptación multicultural predijo de forma negativa una orientación negativa hacia los problemas, un estilo impulsivo-descuidado y un estilo de evasión. We used ethnographic content analysis to examine the lived experiences of 28 people of color regarding racial discrimination. Themes derived from this study included stereotypes and racial profiling, exclusion or denigration, denial of institutional power and privilege, insults regarding physical appearance and language, and internalized racism. Recommendations for researchers and counselors are discussed.</p><p>Dada la demanda de competencia multicultural en el ejercicio profesional de la consejería, es importante examinar la discriminación racial. Usamos un análisis de contenido etnográfico para examinar las experiencias vitales de 28 personas de color en cuanto a discriminación racial. Los temas derivados de este estudio incluyen estereotipos y caracterización racial, exclusión o denigración, negación de poder institucional y privilegios, insultos relacionados con la apariencia física y el idioma, así como el racismo interiorizado. This quantitative study assessed wellness, burnout, and discrimination for 105 graduate-level BIPOC counseling students. Results showed a relationship between discrimination and wellness.</p><p>Los estudiantes en programas de consejería que se identifican como personas negras, indígenas o de color (BIPOC, por sus siglas en inglés) pueden sufrir discriminación que afecte a su bienestar general de forma negativa. Este estudio cuantitativo evaluó el bienestar, agotamiento y discriminación en 105 estudiantes universitarios BIPOC en programas de grado de consejería. {"title":"“I Want to, But How?” Defining Counselor Broaching in Core Tenets and Debated Components","authors":"Kelly M. In this article, I identify core tenets, or commonalities, across the broaching literature and critically examine the debates about specific components of broaching practice. I define the term <i>broaching</i> and invite empirical tests of broaching components to begin a process of translating culturally responsive theory into an observable, evidence-based skill set.</p><p>A pesar de que en la práctica profesional de la consejería se aprueba mayoritariamente el abordamiento de las identidades culturales y problemas estructurales con los clientes, aún se debate cómo hacerlo de la forma más efectiva. En este artículo, identifico principios fundamentales, o rasgos comunes, en la literatura sobre el abordamiento y examino críticamente los debates sobre componentes específicos de la práctica del abordamiento. Thus, to ensure ethical services are provided to clients, supervisors should integrate multicultural perspectives within supervision. Multicultural and social justice principles, although present in the literature, have not been successfully incorporated into previous process and developmental models as viable enhancers to practitioner growth. The multicultural integrated supervision model presented in this article provides supervisees, supervisors, and counselor educators with methods that elicit deeper appreciation for culturally appropriate relationships and interactions.</p><p>La supervisión se considera un componente crítico de la capacitación de profesionales en la salud mental. Por lo tanto, para garantizar que se proporcionan servicios éticos a los clientes, los supervisores deberían integrar perspectivas multiculturales en la supervisión. Los principios multiculturales y de justicia social, aunque se encuentran en la literatura, no se han incorporado con éxito en los modelos anteriores de procesos y desarrollo como potenciadores viables del crecimiento profesional de los consejeros.
