The results suggested that the main factor for damage in ZK60 magnesium alloy was the nucleation, growth and coalescence of microdefects such as microvoids and cracks around the second-phase particles and/or grain boundaries. Then, a unified constitutive model including damage evolution, work hardening and recovery mechanisms was established. The model, verified by experimental data, shows good predictability. It was implemented into ABAQUS software through the VUMAT subroutine, which then predicted and analyzed the microstructure evolution.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"50 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141810587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cold Metal Transfer welding is predominantly used in a variety of industry applications, including aerospace, shipbuilding, automotive and marine industries. In this study, aluminum bronzes and carbon steel were joined by using CMT welding, a variant of the Gas Metal Arc Welding process, with ERCuAl-A2 as the filler metal. Optical microscopy was used to examine the microstructure of the CMT weld joint between aluminum bronze and carbon steel. Results have indicated that dissimilar metals such as aluminum bronze, and carbon steel could be successfully joined by CMT under various processing parameters. The tensile and bending strengths of the dissimilar joint were 490 MPa and 822 MPa, respectively. A variety of intermetallic compounds and solid solutions were generated in the weld zone and fusion zone. The micro-hardness in the carbon steel side of the fusion zones increased sharply, which was 164 HV in the welded condition. The dissimilar joint was stronger than the carbon steel, as the ductile fracture occurred on the carbon steel during the transverse tensile test of the welded specimen. The microstructure interpretation of welded dissimilar joints was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"35 20","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141813906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A multi-physics model was validated with experimental studies and simulation were carried out to analyse the microwave-joint interaction characteristics. The simulation results showed that a concentrated electric field (5.86 × 104 V/m) and higher resistive losses (3.07 × 107 W/m3) at the joint region facilitated rapid heat generation locally. Microstructural characterization of the joint revealed the formation of cellular grains such as Fe-Ni intermetallic phases with Mo, Cr and W-carbides along the grain boundaries. Joints exhibited average microhardness of 290 HV, and tensile strength of 425 ± 10 MPa and 14% elongation with failure due to both ductile and brittle fracture modes.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"5 26","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141356882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results highlight a significant impact of traction speed on both microstructure and properties. As traction speed increases, there is a notable reduction in the size of primary Fe phases, leading to a more uniform distribution of Fe phases. Initially, hardness experiences an increase followed by a subsequent decrease, while electrical conductivity exhibits an inverse trend. The dendritic and globular Fe phases undergo a transition into Fe fibres following multi-stage deformation heat treatment. Furthermore, the Fe fibres and precipitated Fe phases exhibit smaller, denser, and more uniformly distributed characteristics with increasing traction speed. At a traction speed of 0.15 m/min, the Cu–5Fe–0.15Sn alloy showcases peak tensile strength and electrical conductivity values of 826 MPa and 67% IACS, respectively. These values surpass those attained through other traction processes, indicating superior overall performance of the alloy fabricated at a traction speed of 0.15 m/min.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"9 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141360448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An exponential increase in acoustic loss was seen in all alloys, which was viscoelastic in character with an activation energy of ∼ 200–400 kJ.mol−1, similar to that of the self-diffusion of Ni. The magnitude of the loss was found to be proportional to d−0.85, where d is the grain size. Deviations from the high temperature background were seen in Waspaloy and 718Plus around their γ′ solvus temperatures, attributed to increased diffusion during γ′ dissolution. It is suggested that acoustic loss in Ni-based alloys may be used as a means of determining the γ′ solvus temperatures.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"31 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141357465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The microstructure of the specimen was characterised using optical microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction. The results indicate that the adiabatic shear sensitivity increased with the strain. The microstructure evolution of adiabatic shear deformation has been investigated. Firstly, a large number of twins and dislocations are formed and accumulate in the early stage of deformation. Subsequently, they transform into dynamic recrystallised grains, forming an adiabatic shear band (ASB) and ultimately leading to crack formation. The dynamic recrystallisation mechanism in the ASB involves twinning-induced dynamic recrystallisation (TDRX) and rotational dynamic recrystallisation (RDRX). This study has analysed the ASB mechanism, which provides a foundation for material selection and the design of magnesium alloys.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"19 23","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141356601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results show that screw rolling improved the comprehensive tensile properties of the composites, with the yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation increasing from 167.3 MPa, 247.7 MPa and 27.4% to 256.6 MPa, 284.1 MPa and 40.6%, respectively, after eight deformation passes. The strength increments are primarily attributed to fine-grain strengthening. Further, the plasticity of the composites increased with increasing number of deformation passes because of the texture weakening and strain hardening decrement resulting from continuous dynamic recrystallisation. Overall, this study lays a foundation for research on magnesium matrix composites and their application in the field of biomedical materials.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"9 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141383479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It found that cracks were preferred to initiate at the α/β-phase boundaries, the α/α-phase boundaries, and the twinning boundaries within the α-phase. Twinning played a key role in the crack initiation, for the reason that it changed the phase orientation on its sides. Besides, grain orientation was another important factor in the crack nucleation. The soft/hard grain boundaries may become the crack nucleation sites due to the dislocation pile-up. In addition, as the dwell time increased, the fraction of the high Schmid factor of prismatic slip was increasing, which resulted in more cracks. Furthermore, the fracture mode of the alloy was intergranular fracture with microporous aggregation.","PeriodicalId":516293,"journal":{"name":"Materials Science and Technology","volume":"37 22","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140969684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
