However, there has been an increase in demand for greater transparency by academic bidding teams (particularly within the UK) in demonstrating how people with a lived experience have been and will be involved in the research process. Design Namaste Care is a multi-component intervention delivered on a daily basis to people living with advanced dementia or people at end of life with dementia. A significant part of its operationalisation within care homes is the delivery of a number of activities delivered by trained in-house Namaste Care workers to a group of residents with similar high dependency needs. The Namaste Care workers focus on touch, music, nature, sensory experience, aromas and interactions with objects delivered in a way to enhance feelings of enjoyment and wellbeing. This review evaluated the evidence for using these activities with people living with advanced dementia. A systematic search of peer-reviewed research articles was conducted between November 2016 and September 2018 using search terms of activities used in Namaste Care. The quality of each accepted article was rated using the Rapid Evidence Assessment scale. Results The initial literature search returned 1341 results: 127 articles including 42 reviews were included. The majority of activity interventions yielded between 10 and 20 peer-reviewed papers. The use of smells and aromas, interacting with animals and dolls, the use of various forms of music (e.g. background music, singing, personalised music), nature, lighting, various forms of touch/massage and sensory interventions (including Snoezelen) all appear to have proven efficacy with people living with advanced dementia. Conclusions There is generally a limited number of research papers and reviews in this area, but overall there is a good evidence base for including these activities within Namaste Care for people living with advanced dementia.","PeriodicalId":51413,"journal":{"name":"Dementia-International Journal of Social Research and Practice","volume":"20 1","pages":"247 - 272"},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2019-09-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/1471301219878299","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47403858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The feasibility of virtual reality within an inpatient psychiatric care setting was therefore explored. Research design and methods: Eight people with dementia and 16 caregivers were recruited in January and February 2018 from a UK hospital specialising in progressive neurological conditions. A mixed methods design measured affect and behaviour using the Observed Emotion Rating Scale, Overt Aggression Scale-Modified for Neurorehabilitation and St Andrew’s Sexual Behaviour Assessment. Thematic analysis was conducted following semi-structured interviews. Caregivers who worked at the hospital supported people with dementia throughout the process and were interviewed for their views on Head Mounted Display-Virtual Reality (HMD-VR) use with people with dementia. Results HMD-VR was tried and accepted by people with dementia. Participants viewed HMD-VR positively as a ‘change in environment’ and would use it again. People with dementia experienced more pleasure during and after HMD-VR compared to before exposure, as well as increased alertness after. Three core themes emerged: ‘Virtual Reality Experiences’, ‘Impact of Virtual Reality’ and ‘Experiences within the Virtual Environment’. Caregivers discussed preconceptions about virtual reality use and how these changed. Discussion and implications: This is the first study to explore the feasibility of HMD-VR with people with mild to moderately severe dementia in hospital and found that overall HMD-VR is viable. Findings evidence the clinical feasibility of HMD-VR implementation in this environment and inform future research.","PeriodicalId":51413,"journal":{"name":"Dementia-International Journal of Social Research and Practice","volume":"20 1","pages":"106 - 129"},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2019-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/1471301219868036","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45302799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Sensory Palaces project employs creative facilitators to support people living with dementia and their care partners in engaging with two of these sites; Hampton Court Palace and Kew Palace. This paper focusses on the role and contribution of the creative facilitators in supporting people living with dementia to connect with these heritage spaces. It reports on data collected from facilitator interviews relating to the benefits of engaging together through sensory and creative methods to explore and share experiences of the palaces, drawing out important factors from the design, content and delivery of the sessions.","PeriodicalId":51413,"journal":{"name":"Dementia-International Journal of Social Research and Practice","volume":"20 1","pages":"213 - 230"},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2019-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/1471301219871388","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44943143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The intent was to determine if participation in a lay provider, peer-led psychoeducational intervention designed for African American Alzheimer's disease and related dementia caregivers (N = 16) improved caregiver burden and/or stress, coping skills, and social support. Focus groups with Senior Companions informed the intervention design. Quantitative results indicated that caregivers experienced improvement in their overall level of social support and well-being in meeting basic needs. Qualitative findings suggested that caregivers experienced improvement in their knowledge about the disease, experienced increased coping with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia caregiving, and reported benefits of using a lay provider model. Overall, the data suggest that the Senior Companion Program Plus is a promising intervention for African American Alzheimer's disease and related dementia caregivers.","PeriodicalId":51413,"journal":{"name":"Dementia-International Journal of Social Research and Practice","volume":"20 1","pages":"161 - 187"},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2019-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/1471301219871192","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48601672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Concerns have been raised by researchers about the capacity of care home residents with dementia to participate in clinical trials. This includes self-report measures, completion of which researchers have suggested may be unreliable or impossible and may cause distress for residents. Many trials, therefore, utilise only proxy completed outcome measures. This is despite evidence that individuals with mild through to advanced dementia can reliably report on outcomes, if appropriate measures and approaches to data collection are used. However, little has been written about best practice in data collection with this group. This study aimed to explore the experiences of researchers working on dementia trials in care homes and identify best practices to assist design of future trials. Thirty-three researchers completed an online, qualitative questionnaire outlining their experiences and the perceived benefits and challenges of data collection with people with dementia. We identified five main benefits: (1) improving the delivery of person-centred care, (2) hearing the voice of people with dementia, (3) residents spending time with researchers, (4) improving researcher understanding, and (5) having an evidence base from multiple sources. We also identified five main challenges: (1) effective communication, (2) fluctuating capacity, (3) causing distress to residents, (4) time pressures, and (5) staff availability. Researchers also made suggestions about how these can be overcome. We recommend that the challenges identified could be overcome using appropriate methods for collecting data. Thorough training for researchers on data collection with people with dementia was identified as important for ensuring successful data collection.","PeriodicalId":51413,"journal":{"name":"Dementia-International Journal of Social Research and Practice","volume":"20 1","pages":"148 - 160"},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2019-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/1471301219871168","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48355220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although a substantial literature has amassed documenting the overall positive outcomes associated with therapeutic gardening and horticulture for persons with dementia, little is known about the specific aspects of the gardening process that engender these benefits, and how and why they are important. The purpose of this research was to explore, using interpretative phenomenological analysis, the experiences of therapeutic gardening for persons with dementia, and their perspectives on the senses and emotions elicited in the gardening process that promote well-being. The themes that emerged in our analysis are to varying degrees substantiated in the literature: the usefulness of activating the senses, particularly those of touch and smell; the significance of being occupied in meaningful, productive work; the importance of cultivating a sense of curiosity, wonder, and learning; the positive gains derived from socialization in a group context; the peace and hope derived from being ‘in the moment’; and the positive mental and physical well-being derived from participating in the outdoor garden. Our findings support the integration of therapeutic gardening as a valuable practice for people with dementia.","PeriodicalId":51413,"journal":{"name":"Dementia-International Journal of Social Research and Practice","volume":"20 1","pages":"130 - 147"},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2019-08-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/1471301219869121","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41554817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A pilot project in NSW, Australia, tested the effects of unique room door designs for a small group of individuals living with dementia in a residential care home. Internal doors were transformed using a giant adhesive poster created by a commercial graphic designer. The poster replicated the look of traditional front doors, including a range of bright bold colours and architectural features, such as brass doorknockers, letterboxes and door guards. The Revised Algase Wandering Scale (RAWS) was used to identify the effects of introducing the doors on persistent walking, eloping behaviours and spatial disorientation. A total of nine individuals living with dementia participated in the project. The post-intervention data demonstrated that there was a reduction in persistent walking, eloping behaviours and spatial disorientation. In addition, ongoing anecdotal evidence found that individuals continued to seek out others to showcase their unique door.","PeriodicalId":51413,"journal":{"name":"Dementia-International Journal of Social Research and Practice","volume":"20 1","pages":"348 - 354"},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2019-08-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/1471301219868619","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43912840","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
