This study aimed to understand the factors underlying this bias by identifying when it occurs during information processing using an information processing model.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>A total of 57 participants-19 each [ (16 (84.21%) females and 3 (15.79%) males per group)], for the first-episode MDD (FMDD), recurrent episodes MDD (RMDD), and healthy controls (HCs) - matched for sex and hand preference, completed event-related potentials (ERP) to perform psychological function and a choice response time task.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Results revealed that recurrent episodes major depressive disorder participants had decreased N2b and P3b amplitudes but increased contingent negative variation during the processing of happy and neutral facial stimuli, relative to their counterparts. Both recurrent episodes major depressive disorder and first-episode major depressive disorder participants used a parallel information processing strategy for happy information at P3a latency, while healthy controls used a linear information processing strategy.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>The use of a parallel processing strategy among individuals with major depressive disorder may have led to impaired \"happy\" information processes, possibly explaining why individuals with major depressive disorder are less efficient than healthy controls. The results suggest the possibility that biases related to the processing of \"happy\" information among individuals with major depressive disorder may be related to a tendency for these individuals to engage in superficial decision-making. Researchers need to understand and use the learning derived from various projects so that this growing body of knowledge can be applied in future research.</p><p><strong>Objective: </strong>To embed PPIE throughout a randomised controlled trial of a psychosocial intervention called Journeying through Dementia. We identify and discuss the approaches to involvement that worked well and those where improvements were indicated.</p><p><strong>Design: </strong>The Guidance for Reporting Involvement of Patients and the Public Short Form (GRIPP2-SF) is used to describe and critically appraise the approaches taken and the impact of PPIE involvement upon study processes, the study team and those people with dementia and their supporters who acted as advisors.</p><p><strong>Findings: </strong>The involvement of people with a diagnosis of dementia and supporters as study advisors improved the accessibility and relevance of the research for people living with dementia. It also highlighted issues that researchers may have otherwise overlooked. Successful engagement of people with dementia and their supporters in the study was associated with staff skills and particularly use of techniques to scaffold meaningful involvement, as well as participants' memory and cognitive capacity. However, embedding robust and meaningful involvement processes required significant time and resources.</p><p><strong>Discussion: </strong>We propose that certain research processes need to be adapted to be accessible and appropriate for people living with dementia. Recruitment of PPIE advisors needs to reflect population diversity. There also needs to be greater parity of voice between people with lived experience of dementia and researchers. {"title":"Analysing the use of music to facilitate social interaction in care home residents with dementia: Narrative synthesis systematic review.","authors":"Bryony Waters, Lídia Sousa, Martin Orrell, Orii McDermott","doi":"10.1177/14713012221100625","DOIUrl":"10.1177/14713012221100625","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Introduction: </strong>Individuals with dementia residing in care homes can rely heavily on care staff to access activities and meaningful interactions. Previous research suggests that care home interactions can be short, fragmented and task-orientated due to staff workload and residents' language impairments. However, music has the potential to be an alternative communication form that remains intact in the later stages of dementia. This systematic review aims to explore how care home music interventions can facilitate social interactions.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>A narrative synthesis was conducted to explore the mechanisms behind how and why care home music intervention facilitate social interactions. The four-element framework guided analysis; (1) Developing a theory, (2) Developing a preliminary synthesis, (3) Exploring relationships, (4) Assessing robustness.</p><p><strong>Findings: </strong>The final synthesis included 23 articles. The studies consisted of music therapy sessions, personalised music listening, structured music singing or instrument playing sessions and music therapeutic care. Despite the difference in music interventions, most studies reported an increase in residents' sociable verbal and non-verbal communication and a decrease in unsociable communication. Music interventions allowed residents to reminisce, express themselves, focus and connect with others.</p><p><strong>Discussion: </strong>The studies highlighted music interventions are accessible to all residents with dementia despite their impairments. The adaptability allows individuals to continue to connect and express themselves even when language deteriorates. More research is needed into the enablers and barriers to implementing interventions into practice, as this systematic review has highlighted that some form of music intervention for all residents can be highly beneficial.
