Nevertheless, the high computational resources required by such simulations can represent a significant limitation for their application to industrial configurations. Therefore, simplified modelling approaches, when physically applicable, can represent an interesting compromise. This can be the case of slender structures (tubes, rods) often encountered in nuclear power plants. In this paper, an Euler-Bernoulli beam finite element model is implemented inside the CFD code code_Saturne. With the goal of finding CFD methods less expensive than Large Eddy Simulations (LES), URANS and hybird URANS/LES approaches are considered. The resulting fluid-structure model is able to calculate the vibration response of cantilever beams under a fluid flow, avoiding the necessity of CFD-FEM code coupling. The first part of the paper describes the model and its implementation: it allows to perform 2-way explicit fluid-structure coupling, using the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian approach to account for the structure deformations. Validation test cases are presented in the second part: first, the model is validated in terms of frequency, added mass and damping for a cylinder vibrating in static air and water; then, the model is validated towards the vortex-induced resonance and lock-in mechanisms for a cylinder subjected to water cross-flow. The model is then applied to a real experimental configuration of two in-line cylinders in water cross-flow: the calculated vibrations are found to be in good agreement with the experimental measurements.","PeriodicalId":513862,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology","volume":"3 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141117328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, it is very important to determine the guild lines of the random excitation force spectrum for the coil tube. To the authors' knowledge, there are no published studies on the normalized force spectrum of coil tube. A simplified three-layer experimental model was established. The robustness of the numerical method was demonstrated by comparing the experimental and simulated results, including the vibration response and the fluid excitation force spectrum. And then a semi-empirical equation for predicting the dominant frequency of turbulent buffeting was constructed by employing the threshold envelope method. Through the observation of time history and RMS data, it was found that pitch diameter ratio between adjacent tube layers had the greatest influence on the force coefficients. Pitch diameter ratio in the same layer and helix angle had little effect on the force coefficients. With the increase of a, the flow instability in the shell-side flow enhanced and the fluctuation of force coefficients became larger. Finally, the mechanism of the tube position, Reynolds number and bundle structure on the normalized force spectrum was studied. The normalized envelope force spectrum for coil tube was proposed as the guidelines to predict and evaluate the random excitation force acting on the tubes.","PeriodicalId":513862,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology","volume":"47 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141114709","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although their operational principles are straightforward, the fluid dynamics of the pumped medium exhibit non-trivial characteristics, including intricate transient phenomena. Consequently, a comprehensive fluid dynamic description, such as a three-dimensional RANS analysis, presents challenges due to its demanding computational requirements. While simpler analytical PD pump models are available, they often fail to adequately represent the primary system behaviors, particularly when dealing with cavitation. Motivated by these challenges, this study aims to develop a novel one-dimensional model for PD pumps, offering a representation of essential fluid phenomena without imposing significant computational burdens. After assessing the relative importance of the fluid dynamic behaviors that the model must capture, we construct a pump model based on a one-dimensional fluid description and solve it using a second-order in time and space MUSCL-TVD scheme. The model's validity is confirmed by its application to both single-chamber and three-chamber diaphragm PD pumps, which are instrumented for experimental validation. The results of the one-dimensional model exhibit strong agreement with physical experiments, both in controlled laboratory environments and field conditions. This success suggests a promising approach for industrial applications.","PeriodicalId":513862,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology","volume":"73 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141121749","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The presence of weld defects or improperly expanded tube-to-tubesheet joints in a system that mixes and transfers fluids can lead to several negative consequences on heat exchanger process. Achieving a high-quality assessment of fabricated tube-to-tube sheet joints based on international standards is highly demanded in this situation. There are studies assessing the mechanical and metallurgical characteristics of tube-to-tube sheet joints that only employ one welding technique; however, there aren't enough research on the utilizing multiple welding techniques.In the fabrication stage, a combination of gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) was employed followed by light expansion and post weld heat treatment( PWHT). This combination welding technique was adopted to ensure high-quality welds and achieve the desired joint strength and integrity. The welding and tube expansion process successfully produced high-quality tube-to-tubesheet joints.Linear and circular indications representing the cracks were absent during liquid penetration test. The minimum leak path was greater than the two-third of tube wall thickness. The findings of this study provide strong evidence supporting the use of a combined GTAW and SMAW process for the fabrication of tube-to-tubesheet joints. The research results manifest that the creep-fatigue life prediction model has a high life prediction ability within ± 2.0 times the dispersion band of the prediction results. Concurrently, a large number of intertwined tearing edges, microcracks, and microvoids appear in the fracture morphology, and creep and fatigue interact with each other in the form of effective stress. Excessive earthquake is a typical BDBE. During such events, the Fast Reactor Main Vessel (FRMV) is vulnerable to buckling because of its thin-walled cylindrical structure. Buckling deformation without causing immediate collapse should not be considered as a limit state in BDBEs. Instead, the objective is to achieve a stable post-buckling state. In the present study, dynamic post-buckling behavior of thin-walled cylinders under intense horizontal vibration is experimentally studied, which simulates loop-type FRMV design. FEM simulation is also conducted and validated by experimental data. Based on results analysis, a global response stability after buckling is confirmed. The buckled model shows resilience to withstand catastrophic collapse even when intense excitation continues to apply. Using equivalent linear response method, dynamic mechanisms behind the stability are revealed. Due to substantial degradation of structural stiffness, the post-buckling response shifts into the out-of-phase domain such that response divergence is prevented. Meanwhile, the response is notably delayed from the input, which impedes the conversion of input energy into kinetic energy, reducing the inertial impact to the structure. These mechanisms are found to be independent of input waveforms and can be applied to a general seismic scenario. Moreover, the limit for global response stability after buckling and the effect of input frequency on the post-buckling behavior are clarified.","PeriodicalId":513862,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology","volume":"120 14","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140380228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The advent of landslides introduces the risk of pipeline leaks or ruptures, posing a significant threat to the environment, with the potential for casualties. Throughout the occurrence of landslides, uncertainties abound, yet few studies have addressed the incorporation of uncertainties in assessing pipeline safety. This work proposes a novel hybrid approach to the safety assessment for pipelines under landslides. The use of finite element analysis (FEA) models the pipeline under the action of landslides. The numerical outcomes, combined with unascertained measure theory (UMT), develop a multi-indicator unascertained measure (UM) matrix. Random forest (RF) algorithm is employed to determine the weight of indicators in the matrix. The hybrid application of set pair theory and the UM evaluation vector finally determine the pipeline safety degree and level. The proposed methodology has been well-validated through a case study on an in-service pipeline. The results indicate that the case pipeline safety degree is 2.777, 2.132, 3.132, 3.904, and 2.240, respectively. The corresponding safety level is III, II, III, IV, and II, respectively, which is consistent with the pipeline's actual condition. Different from the conventional safety assessment approach, the proposed methodology demonstrates the enhanced effectiveness, facilitating a more precise evaluation of the pipeline's safety condition.","PeriodicalId":513862,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology","volume":"112 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140380546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current design codes use empirical formulas based on assumptions to determine the minimum required thickness for obround components. The design process involves iteration. The results obtained are far from accurate. In the paper, a new design method for obround components is proposed based on the recently proposed closed-form solution. In the new method, an obround shell is imagined as being stretched laterally from a cylindrical shell or parent cylinder. With the flattened shell increases, the thickness of the obround shell should increase accordingly, to keep the maximum hoop stress of obround shell consistent with the maximum hoop stress of the parent cylinder. The minimum requested thickness, MRT, of the obround shell are related to the MRT of the parent cylinder and the flattened shell length of the obround shell. Through parameter studies, those relationships are investigated. Empirical expressions are used to describe those relationships. Using the proposed design method, the determination of the MRT of obround members becomes the determination of the MRT of the parent cylinders and additional parameters. The MRT of obround members is determined directly. The case study demonstrates that the proposed method is an efficient and accurate design process for obround members.
