The experiments for the gun barrels with and without the thermal jacket subjected to unilateral thermal radiation were conducted on a thermal jacket protection efficiency experimental system. Three-dimensional finite element models were established to perform the thermal-structural analysis and approximate the temperature distribution and thermal deformation of the shrouded gun barrel and bare gun tube. The experimental results validated the numerical models for the study of solar radiation on the thermal-structural characteristics of the gun barrels with and without the thermal jacket. The temperature changes together with their gradients, and the thermal deformation of the gun tube shrouded with the thermal jacket were notably less than that of the bare gun tube. The non-uniform temperature distribution caused by unilateral radiation can be substantially ameliorated by the thermal jacket. The developed diamond-shaped thermal jacket owned satisfactory protection effectiveness. In addition, moderately increasing the thermal jacket's thickness or the air gap between the thermal jacket and gun tube can decrease the muzzle deflection of the shrouded gun barrels. The work is promising in providing both theoretical and practical contributions in design of shrouded tank gun barrels aiming at achieving high first shot accuracy.","PeriodicalId":513862,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology","volume":"74 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140378030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Corrosion defects pose a significant risk to the safe operation of elbows. Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) detection has been developed as a suitable technique for identifying defects in pipelines. To address the distortion of elbow defect signals in the images arising from variations in the lift-off value of the leakage detector, this paper proposed an image identification method based on an improved YOLOv5 network. The differences in defect images are simulated by analysing the lift-off value of the magnetization unit. A defect image enhancement method of multiscale retinex with colour restoration fusion homomorphic filtering (MSRCR-HF) is employed to enhance the features of defective MFL signal images. To further improve the accuracy of the model, the YOLOv5 network is optimized by integrating the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) and the space-to-depth-nonstrided convolution (SPD-Conv) module. The results show that the proposed image enhancement method effectively accentuates the features of defect images. Moreover, the suggested image identification method exhibits superior accuracy in identification. The mean average precision (mAP) values for the original image set and the enhanced image set are 85.0% and 91.4%, respectively. Consequently, the proposed method is shown to be highly viable for the automatic identification of MFL defects in small-diameter pipe elbows.","PeriodicalId":513862,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology","volume":" 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140220724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These cyclic loadings are very variable and complex. Considering the fatigue situations, a better understanding of the effects of fatigue test parameters on fatigue behaviors of pipeline steels and welds is required. Hence, in this study, the influences of fatigue test parameters on the Paris law coefficients were studied for pipeline steels and welds. It was analyzed for pipe steels of X65~X100 and a girth weld of X70. Influences of material strength, crack orientation relative to the pipe axis, and frequency in the range of 1~30 Hz were insignificant. It was found that the coefficients a1 and b2 of the m-ln(C) relationships linearly relied on the load ratio. The constants (α1, β1, α2, and β2) of these linear relationships between R-ratio and a1 (and b2) were determined for pipe steels.","PeriodicalId":513862,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology","volume":" 62","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140221165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, thermal stress and corresponding thermo-mechanical fatigue damage are the main limitations. A unified viscoplastic constitutive model coupled with anisotropic damage is introduced and validated by comparing the experimental and simulated hysteresis loops and cyclic softening curves. The model is implemented into the ANSYS software by using the USERMAT subroutine to numerically investigate the high-temperature fatigue behavior of a 1000MW steam turbine rotor on different start-up schedules. The critical areas of the rotor are studied in terms of temperature, stress, accumulated inelastic strain, and damage. Based on the damage analysis, the hot start schedule is optimized and validated. The startup time can be significantly shortened within permitted fatigue damage. Moreover, the life expenditure under different loading-up rates is calculated and the extra start-up costs can be evaluated accordingly for wider application.","PeriodicalId":513862,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology","volume":"33 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140236122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the results of the failure pressure of corroded pipelines obtained with a computer tool called PIPEFLAW based on nonlinear finite element analyses are presented and compared with the failure pressures of corroded pipes obtained with twelve (12) advanced semi-empirical models from the literature. A computational code was created in the Python language to automatically obtain the failure pressure of randomly generated cases of corroded pipes, which allows the analysis of multiple piping cases with isolated external corrosion defects in an idealized configuration. For this purpose, the LHS (Latin Hypercube Sampling) approach was adopted for the design of experiments to obtain a better distribution of cases in the sample space. Comparisons between the results using the FEM and semi-empirical models show, as expected, that the semi-empirical solutions are more conservative in most cases analyzed in this work. A statistical model is proposed that adheres to the relative error distribution for some of the models used. Moreover, the influence of some parameters (pipeline thickness, defect depth, defect length, defect width, yield stress and ultimate stress) on the failure pressure was evaluated. It was found that in most of the studied models the error increases as the defect depth increases.","PeriodicalId":513862,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology","volume":"25 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140412679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, under acid fracture fluid and different loading frequencies, the fatigue crack growth rate of 17-4PH stainless steel was obtained by test, and the test data were used the modified Paris law. Then it is applied to numerical simulations to research the fatigue crack growth behavior of the valve body. The results show that the higher the loading frequency in the fracture fluid, the lower the fatigue crack growth rate, which is consistent with the test results. The influence of the working pressure on the stress intensity factor of the crack front is greater than that of the plunger stroke times. The model accurately predicts the fatigue crack orientation and corrosion fatigue crack growth life of the valve body.","PeriodicalId":513862,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology","volume":"10 19","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140430275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The primary focus of this research is to examine the impact of SMA incorporation on the structural behavior of the parent configuration, aimed at enhancing its structural stiffness. To ensure the validity of the proposed model, sensitivity analyses and numerical validations are presented. The mathematical framework employed in this study employs the higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT), which offers enhanced accuracy in capturing the intricate behaviors of these shell panels. The dynamic responses are obtained using the Newmark average acceleration method. Numerical simulations are carried out using a dedicated MATLAB code developed in-house, allowing amplified correctness in outcomes and widespread analysis. The study thoroughly assesses a range of geometric parameters and those relevant to SMA for both intact and impaired shell panels. The outcomes of the investigation reveal affirmative findings, underscoring notable improvements in structural strength and enhanced nonlinear dynamic responses through the introduction of SMA reinforcement into the composite shell panel.","PeriodicalId":513862,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology","volume":"2 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140430343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While several numerical solutions have been developed for determining the residual stress profile through the thickness of thick-walled cylinders for different combinations of the shrink-fit and autofrettage processes, there are no analytical solutions available to predict the residual stress profile induced by the combination of the shrink-fit and inner and outer autofrettage processes with the hoop winding. In this study, the analytical formulations to predict the residual stress distribution for various combinations of the three processes (hoop-winding, shrink-fit, and autofrettage) have been formulated considering the same manufacturing sequences. The results demonstrate that combinations that include the wire-winding process significantly improve the residual stress profile through the wall thickness of single or two-layer thick-walled cylinders. Specifically, when the wire-winding process is included, the residual stress at the inner surface increases by 25% in single-layer configurations and by 12% in two-layer thick-walled cylinders, respectively, compared to configurations without the wire-winding process.","PeriodicalId":513862,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139592606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This computational study is intended to be an advanced way to predict heat transfer mechanisms in the melt pool prior to empirical testing. AISI 304 austenitic stainless steels are used in this study, and a simplified model of fin-tubes is introduced to simulate submerged arc welding on a water wall panel structure. The welding process is numerically implemented by a moving heat source, and the heat distribution is determined by thermo-physical phenomena, e.g., a recoil pressure and surface tension due to the welding. Double fillet welding refers to two separate welds which have to be made one by one. A new coordinate system is thus introduced at every starting point of the welding process to overcome geometrical complexities. The computational results are discussed to compare the weld bead estimation with the experimental findings. The melting and evaporation of the metal appears appropriate to explain the formation of weld beads in submerged arc welding since the modelling is in good agreement with the experiments.","PeriodicalId":513862,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology","volume":"8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140492283","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
