Literary work is a product of the author’s critical thinking; therefore, it is important to understand Chudori’s ideology in her work. From a Marxist point of view, there is a battle for domination in every society. This study tries to understand where is the ideological position of Chudori in the battle for domination. The method used to conduct this research is qualitative descriptive. Research on Laut Bercerita was a literature study that uses a Marxist approach. Theories that will be used are Antonio Gramsci's Theory of Hegemony and Louis Althusser's Theory of State Apparatus. The study concludes that Chudori is a figure of resistance in a battle for domination, which means Chudori's ideological position belongs to the group that refuses to be dominated.","PeriodicalId":512562,"journal":{"name":"Diglosia: Jurnal Kajian Bahasa, Sastra, dan Pengajarannya","volume":"234 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141386871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research focused on finding the positive politeness strategies and the translation techniques of the utterances obtained from Pay It Forward movie as the data source. Based on the findings of the research, there were 40 utterances with positive politeness strategies as the data under analysis. The research findings, among others, showed that the strategies of Intensify interest to hearer (17.50%) and Exaggerate (17.50%) were dominantly used in the Pay It Forward movie, while the translation strategy of Established equivalent (40.00%) was mostly used in the translation of positive politeness utterances in the movie. It can be concluded here that the translator translates the positive politeness utterances of the source language (English) into the target language (Indonesian) appropriately through the Established equivalent strategy without making any significant changes to maintain the meaning relatively the same in the Indonesian translation subtitles.","PeriodicalId":512562,"journal":{"name":"Diglosia: Jurnal Kajian Bahasa, Sastra, dan Pengajarannya","volume":"133 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141388795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data used are mostly extracted from Indonesian proverb books, and ones found in proverbs of other languages. First, the data are classified based on plants or parts of plant possibly concurred. Later, the investigation is directed toward the various possibility the combination might represent. Through careful analysis, it is finally found that the plants or parts of the plants to be combined can be between different plants, parts of the same plants, one plant and its parts, parts and different plants, and parts of different plants. Plants or parts of plants to be combined are perceived as: to have the same quality for representing something hard or impossible to change, something must be committed by both parties, the same destiny to be experienced, or how should someone to behave; the different quality of plants or parts of the plant is used to represent unexpected thing (better or worse) to happen, not easy to give up and always depend on something available, could differentiate between good and bad matters, to use the worse quality things first before the better ones, imbalance competition, ability and sincerity to accept the good and bad aspect of things; one plant or parts of the plant are older (coming out earlier) or younger (coming out later) than the others to represent the difficulties for the older people to change, any occasion follows cause and effect law, the new comers usually should or could not drive out or defeat the natives; and phonological representation to show that sometimes the proverbs are created on the basis of aesthetic achievements instead of merely on metaphorical similarities.","PeriodicalId":512562,"journal":{"name":"Diglosia: Jurnal Kajian Bahasa, Sastra, dan Pengajarannya","volume":"16 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141388499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study used a descriptive qualitative method with a critical discourse analysis approach from van Dijk’s perspective. The study conducted three stages of research: data collection, data analysis, and presentation of results. The data source was the comments column in the childfree by choice discussion video on the Menjadi Manusia Youtube account. Data in the form of written utterances were collected by reading and note-taking. The data were analyzed in aspects of discourse structure, speech strategies, and social cognition. The results elucidate the macro text structure is embodied in the theme. By this meaning, the utterances align with pro-childfree, neutral, and contra-childfree values. Contra-childfree utterance is more dominant rather than pro-childfree and neutral. Contra-childfree utterance uses several strategies: quoting religious text sources, using rhetorical questions, analogies, and argumentative language. Individuals who do not want a child are labeled with a negative stigma as they are considered against Indonesian society’s religion and sociocultural values. It indicates that the discourse tends to be dominated by pronatalist ideas that require women to have children.","PeriodicalId":512562,"journal":{"name":"Diglosia: Jurnal Kajian Bahasa, Sastra, dan Pengajarannya","volume":"97 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141389578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It aims to analyze the use and function of language on signs at Sidoarjo Train Station, Waru Train Station, Purabaya Bus Station, Larangan Bus Station, and Juanda Airport. According to Spolsky and Cooper's theoretical framework, signs are classified based on various criteria forming language taxonomy on signs. The data collection was conducted using observation and interviews. The interview was conducted with one person (passenger) at each location and the observation lasted for four days for all locations, followed by data integration and analysis. The study identified 94 signs, including 62 monolingual (Indonesian and English) and 32 bilingual (Indonesian-English) signs functioning as prohibition, warning, labeling, direction, and information. The findings found the diverse linguistic landscape in the public transportation places in Sidoarjo Regency, which had an impact on communication and navigation for both domestic and foreign passengers. Furthermore, for future research, the researchers suggest using mixed methods for analysis and addressing specific areas, particularly enhancing the clarity and visibility of prohibition signs for passenger safety.","PeriodicalId":512562,"journal":{"name":"Diglosia: Jurnal Kajian Bahasa, Sastra, dan Pengajarannya","volume":"37 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140734515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
