The structure, which lost its community with the population exchange (1923) between Turkey and Greece, has since then been out of service and a rapid deterioration process has begun. Analysis works are frequently implemented for this purpose and become crucial in Turkey, of which a large part is within the earthquake zone. However, the majority of the studies on the preservation of historical buildings are lacking in detailed material analysis and numerical methods. Conducting a series of material tests and numerical analyses for the structure provides more reliable and qualified interventions since they influence the decisions on the reinforcement and protection methods employed for historical buildings. For this purpose, the material characterizations of the mortar, plaster and stones used in the church were carried out by performing physical, chemical, mechanical, petrographic and mineralogical tests on samples taken from the church. Afterwards, mechanical tests of the walls and vibration tests were conducted to determine the dynamic behavior of the building. Based on the results obtained from the analyses, a series of intervention methods were proposed. It is understood that the flat-jack, shear and vibration tests are vital for determining the real structural behavior of the building. Furthermore, it is recommended that vibration tests are carried out on both the overall structure and individual walls to determine the dynamic behavior of similar structures where only outer walls remain standing.\u0000 ","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"136 16","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140369894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It enhances durability by improving inter-layer bonding and increasing the friction coefficient with a Corrugated Imminent Hexagonal Composite Geogrid, boosting pavement bearing capacity. The necessity of this research is the integration of corrugated geogrids and geocells into the design of flexible pavement, in conjunction with a comprehensive evaluation of interlayer shear performance, effectively tackles a range of engineering obstacles and enhances the pavement system's durability, stability, and affordability. Geogrid's corrugated structure resists shoving, offers stabilization, and, combined with Fusion Geoblanket and Perforated Geocell, prevents potholes. Typically, geocellular brace parts are utilized in civil engineering and technical applications, and they are frequently connected to geocellular systems or geocells. These systems are frequently employed in the building of retaining walls, slope protection, erosion control, and soil stabilization. The intended use and product design influence the installation procedures and specific functioning approach. The proposed model prevents permanent pavement failures, ensuring durability, low maintenance, and improved lifespan, assessed through Finite Element Analysis. Thus, the proposed method develops a layout for flexible pavement that's going to prolong its life expectancy and prevent long-term deformation failure.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"11 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140374800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, the Water Surplus Variability Index (WSVI), which is based on both precipitation and Penman-Monteith (PM) evapotranspiration (ET) estimates, was used to quantify drought. The application of the WSVI is not possible in some locations because of the missing data for estimating ET. The key objectives of this research were to 1. compare the different temperature-based WSVIs for the 1-, 3-, 6- and 12-month timescales with the original PM-based WSVI; 2. improve the WSVI by replacing the full-set PM equation with the corresponding temperature-based ET equation, such as Hargreaves, adjusted Hargreaves, Thornthwaite, modified Thornthwaite or temperature-based PM; and 3. compare the best temperature-based WSVI with the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). The set of meteorological data was obtained from several stations from Pannonian Basin (Budapest, Debrecen, Novi Sad and Sombor). According to statistical indicators, the Hargreaves-based WSVI (WSVIH) was ranked first or second for each time period at all locations. The WSVIH was additionally tested using the SPI for each location and each timescale. The obtained results indicated the capability of the WSVIH to quantify drought frequency, duration and severity identified by the SPI. Finally, the WSVI can be recommended using the Hargreaves equation instead of the full-set PM equation in future WSVI implementations in the Pannonian Basin.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":" 68","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140384623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, one unreinforced specimen served as the control, one specimen was reinforced with the wall post, and two specimens were reinforced with the TRM. They were fabricated and subjected to cyclic OOP loading until a drift ratio of 6%. Load and displacement values were recorded, and the research team discussed the failure mechanisms of the specimens. Results showed that the application of the wall post had the highest efficiency as it increased the load by about 3 times, while this value for TRM-strengthened walls was only 1.5. Strengthening modified the cracking, shifting it towards the middle parts of the wall, changing it from a brittle to a failure mode. Comparison of the envelope curves of specimens revealed significant improvements. The ultimate displacement and energy absorption capacity for the specimen reinforced with the post wall increased by 30% and 300% respectively. Similarly, for TRM-strengthened specimens, these values were 48% and 100%.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"55 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140232368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the interfacial stresses and bond strengths within the composite structures formed by the interaction of geologic bodies and tectonic formations are not well understood, which can lead to safety accidents and excessive wastage of support materials in engineering. To address this gap, rock-concrete composite specimens were created using six distinct types of surrounding rocks. The strength law of composite specimens was analyzed, and the uniaxial compressive strength prediction model of composite specimens was derived based on Mohr−Coulomb strength yield criterion. The results show that the uniaxial compressive strength of the composite specimen changes with the change of rock type, which is between the strength of rock and concrete. The uniaxial peak strength and elastic modulus of composite specimens are linearly positively correlated with the ratio (Y) of concrete-rock elastic modulus, which is easily affected by concrete properties. However, the peak strain is linearly and negatively correlated with Y, which is greatly influenced by rock. The rock-concrete interface of the composite specimen plays an important role in the failure of the specimen, which changes the stress transfer state of the composite specimen, produces uncoordinated deformation, and finally causes the failure of the specimen. The theoretical and test value error of the derived composite specimen uniaxial compressive strength prediction model are –1.19%~12.20%, and the theoretical calculation model can be used to predict the uniaxial compressive strength of rock-concrete composite specimens.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"21 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140242167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research shows that compared to steel rib structures, the axial force and bending moment of sprayed concrete structures is larger under different combinations of support structures. Compared with a single-layer support structure, the stress distribution at each position of the double-layer I-shaped steel structure is more uniform, and the sprayed concrete structure only experiences compression damage at the corner of the side wall. As the strength of sprayed concrete increases, the stress distribution of sprayed concrete at the arch waist becomes more uniform. The stress concentration state of sprayed concrete at the corner of the tunnel wall and the plastic yield state of the steel rib structure have also been improved. The higher the concrete strength, the lower the stress ratio on the steel rib’s inner and outer sides.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"2 S1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140244688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A pivotal aspect of this modeling process is the accurate characterization of material behavior. The connection between stress and strain tensors within soil is explicated by the soil constitutive equation, which is reliant on factors like soil type and deformation circumstances. One notable model is hypoplasticity, which has been in use for more than three decades. This research aims to calibrate the hypoplastic parameters for Danube sand using the SoilTest Module of PLAXIS. The constitutive hypoplastic model for Danube sand was fine-tuned through a series of numerical simulations. The parameter calibration occurred twice: initially according to 5 cycles of hysteresis loop of stress–strain diagram of cyclic triaxial testing, and then subsequently in accordance with strain trends observed after ten thousand cycles. A comparison was drawn between parameters determined from the overall strain trends and those calibrated based on the five cycles. The findings indicate that while the model calibrated during a specific segment of testing can accurately predict strain values during compression and extension, it falls short in forecasting the accumulated settlement following prolonged cyclic loading. This suggests the model’s limited capability in anticipating long-term cyclic load effects on settlement behavior.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"30 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140242798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper focuses on analyzing a set of RVE data and proposes parametric equations for determining the compressive and flexural strength characteristics (σc and σf). Primarily, a parametric study is performed with RVE analysis. The essential design parameters are used to fit rational equations. The RVE data are also applied to train artificial neural networks of σc and σf. RVE, neural networks, and rational equations are correlated. Regression equations are validated with the experimental study. SEM, TEM, XRD, and FTIR results are carried out in the microscopic and mechanical analysis for carbon nanofiber cement composites, which can lift their strength, constancy, integrity, and density and reinforce the composite microstructure. Lastly, the Pareto-optimal design results are presented with a multi-objective optimization problem.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"14 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140253218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of its durability, low recycling rates, poor waste management, and maritime use, a considerable portion of plastic waste ends up in aquatic environments. Photo-oxidation and other mechanisms degrade plastics into microplastics (MPs), which are particles smaller than 5 mm. MPs can spread through the aerial, terrestrial, and aquatic areas, and running waterways serve as conduits for MP transport across various ecosystems. MPs have been found at various levels of the food web, and animals can ingest, inhale, or absorb them through their skin. MPs pose a significant health risk to flora and fauna, including marine creatures and humans, due to their small size, diverse colors, high abundance, and ability to adsorb antibiotic-resistant pathogens, causing cytotoxicity, acute reactions, undesirable immunological responses, neurotoxicity, and DNA alteration. MPs have a negative economic impact on industries such as agriculture, fishing, tourism, etc. Detecting and quantifying the presence of MPs is therefore critical. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the various techniques and equipment used to detect and characterize MPs in aqueous environments. Identifying and educating the public about the primary sources of plastic pollution can help reduce the number of MPs in the environment.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"57 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140420718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Additionally, the study encompasses an analysis of various concrete properties, including the pH of fresh concrete mixtures as well as water absorption, chloride permeability, and surface resistivity (SR) in hardened concrete specimens. Microstructure analysis on HPC specimens as well as the service life prediction of RCS were also performed in this study. Test results show that the HPC incorporating 35% GGBFS or 35% GGBFS + 20% FA as cement replacement resulted in a lowered pH of fresh mixtures while water absorption and chloride permeability of these specimens increased significantly. In addition, the incorporation of 35% GGBFS or 35% GGBFS + 20% FA concurrently enhanced the SR of HPC specimens. Moreover, these HPC specimens exhibited better corrosion resistance ability as their respective AMCT values were about 1.54 and 1.45 times higher than that of the control specimen. Further, the research highlighted a substantial extension in the corrosion initiation time of concrete structures employing 35% GGBFS or 35% GGBFS + 20% FA, about 3 and 6 times longer than the HPC without GGBFA and FA, respectively. The experimental results, confirmed by the substantial microstructural enhancement in the HPC containing GGBFS and FA, also demonstrated a close interplay between durability and other concrete properties such as water absorption, chloride permeability, and SR.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"19 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140436299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
