This study investigates the effectiveness of fluid viscous dampers (FVDs) in enhancing the seismic resilience of a 12-story (G+12) reinforced concrete structure. By utilizing Etabs and SeismoSoft softwares, a comparative analysis is conducted between two structural configurations: one with a traditional fixed base and another incorporating fluid viscous dampers. The incorporation of FVDs aims to mitigate the seismic impact by dissipating energy, thereby reducing base shear, displacement, and acceleration during seismic events. The structure's location in a high seismicity zone necessitates robust design strategies to ensure safety and structural integrity. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the seismic response and advanced simulation framework providing detailed results on key parameters. The findings highlight the potential of fluid viscous dampers to significantly improve the seismic performance of reinforced concrete structures, offering a promising solution for earthquake-prone areas.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"53 24","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141803716","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The obtained results were used to categorize UHPFRC-CA beam's failure mode, establish the influence of key factors on shear performance, and develop UHPFRC-CA beam's compression zone resistance and first shear cracking load equations whose results were compared with those from this research, other researchers and existing equation. Findings revealed that UHPFRC-CA beam fails in cable stayed, shear partial compression, cable stayed-diagonal tension and cable stayed-partial shear tension. Shear span-depth ratio (a/d) has the most influence on the beams' failure mode. Higher percentage volume of steel fibre improves ultimate load capacity and midspan displacement resistance at failure load. Hooked-end steel fibre improves deformation (crack width and midspan displacement at failure load) resistance. Higher a/d is more beneficial to midspan displacement resistance at failure load than load capacity; while lower stirrup spacing leads to higher midspan displacement at failure load. Finally, the developed first shear cracking load equation can adequately capture the true first shear cracking load of UHPFRC-CA beam; and the developed compression zone resistance equation can be conveniently used to represent the joint contribution of compressive strength and fibre factor to UHPFRC-CA beam's shear resistance.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"6 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141817427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The motion of the sphere is constrained to a plane problem. The derived system of equations is numerically solved using the continuation method and the modified secant method. The absorber's response to different harmonic excitation forces is simulated to demonstrate the applicability of these techniques in its analysis. The dependence of the response amplitude on the angular frequency of excitation is presented graphically. The results also include a response stability analysis using the Routh-Hurwitz criteria.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"34 13","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141815293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We considered separately the three phases of steel fibers, cement composite matrix, and rebar within the meso-scale finite element model. A random distribution of fibers was generated in the matrix based on the geometric characteristics of the fibers and their volume fraction. By employing the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) model, the interaction between rebar and fibers with cement composite was simulated. Experimental pull-out tests were conducted to determine the parameters of the model. A meso-scale finite element model was validated and the effect of rebar diameter and fiber volume fraction on the bond behavior of rebar with fiber-reinforced cement composites was examined. In accordance with the experimental results, the bond-slip curve obtained with the meso-scale finite element model can be divided into five areas: non-slip, slight slip, splitting, decreasing, and residual. Additionally, it can be observed that fiber-free cement composites fail by splitting, whereas specimens containing fibers fail by sliding. This numerical model is therefore able to predict and estimate the influence of a variety of parameters on the pull-out response between fiber-reinforced cement composite and ribbed bar and failure mechanisms without the need for expensive and time-consuming testing.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"11 45","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141640527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the SPH method, the resulting hydrodynamic pressures were applied to the interior of the wall of the structure as an external force which is made as mass additions to the tank walls in Westergaard approach. With the help of software developed, the load carrying system of the elevated water tank was modeled using the MATLAB Partial Differential Equation Toolbox (PDE) software, based on the finite element method, and its verification was made by comparing with ANSYS software model. Dynamic condensation method was used to perform time history analyses for the cited earthquakes. The time-dependent solutions of partial differential equations are solved with the help of ODE45 functions based on Runge-Kutta method, by arranging the equation of motion in state-space format. The cited tank was analyzed linearly under different seismic activities for empty, half-filled (50%) and full-filled (100%) cases and the obtained results were compared with each other. It has been concluded that considering nonlinear behavior of the fluid during the earthquake with the SPH method provided consistency with the real behavior of RC elevated water tanks and gave more realistic results than the traditional Westergaard approach.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"13 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141648111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several investigations and developments in composite materials have generated a wide range of materials that could be used to enhance the strength and durability of structures. This study introduces a novel approach to shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams by utilizing Near Surface Mounted (NSM) CFRP ropes in combination with steel-reinforced geopolymer in the compressive zone. The investigation aims to assess the effectiveness of these advanced composite materials in enhancing the structural performance of RC beams, as opposed to conventional steel rebar. Three specimens were subjected to three-point bending tests, demonstrating that the NSM-CFRP ropes, paired with steel-reinforced geopolymer, significantly increased load-carrying capacity. Additionally, the results indicated substantial improvements in ductility and energy absorption. This research contributes to the field by providing a sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional strengthening techniques, supported by a comprehensive assessment of both experimental and numerical findings.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"90 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141657641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this research, by conducting uniaxial compression test (UCT), axial (APLT), and diametral (DPLT) point load tests on gathered sulfate rock blocks from the Gachsaran Formation outcrops at the four under-construction reservoir dam sites in Iran, investigate the effect of mineral composition on the relationships between point load index, the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and their point load deformation. Regarding that, firstly by creating a correlation between axial (APLI) and diametral (DPLI) point load index and UCS, relationships for each specific mineral composition were provided. Secondly, by comparing the reliability of the APLT and DPLT results in predicting UCS, the conversion factors of the APLI and DPLI to the UCS were calculated. Thirdly, the effect of unique or multiple sampling locations in the analysis results was compared, and finally, for the first time, the deformation of loading points in point load tests was investigated. The results of this study confirmed that by variation of mineral composition of sulfate rocks, the relationships between APLI and DPLI, and UCS, conversion factors as well as loading points deformation patterns during point load tests are changed significantly, and the results of APLT and DPLT can be used to predict UCS with the same reliability in dry and saturated conditions.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"17 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141659147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the Magu tunnel in Yunnan Province, which is in the upper hard and lower soft stratum, the surrounding rock deformation is large, and the primary support structure occurs spray concrete cracking, steel arch frame twisting deformation. According to the convergence constraint curve, this paper proposes to adopt the primary support optimization design scheme of \"shortening the bench length + optimizing the length and arrangement of anchor rods\". According to the numerical simulation results of FLAC3D, the important indexes such as deformation convergence, surrounding rock stress, anchor axial force and thickness of plastic zone in different excavation support conditions are analyzed. The conclusions are as follows: 1. The soft rock at the foot of the benches does not provide sufficient support resistance, resulting in large settlement and convergence deformation that can cause the primary support structure to fail and become damaged. 2. The length of the middle bench and the primary support strength and stiffness contribute most to the deformation. 3. The deformation control effect of the short anchor rods on the surrounding rock is relatively weak. Increasing the length of anchor can better play the role of anchor suspension enhancement and give full play to the surrounding rock's own bearing capacity. Finally, the deformation of the tunnel is under control after adopting the optimized primary support structure, which ensures the smooth construction.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"120 18","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141666932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these structures are susceptible to one of the most hazardous disasters, which is the fire. This paper presents a numerical investigation of the fire resistance performance of self-compacting reinforced concrete (SCC) beams, as well as a parametric study to assess the impact of hybrid fibres and fire insulation on enhancing their performance under fire conditions. The study is conducted by developing a 3D finite element (FE) model using ANSYS software, where temperatures are applied according to the ISO834 standard fire. Geometric and material nonlinearities are considered in the evaluation of the behaviour of beams under fire conditions. The developed FE model is validated by comparing the predicted results with those of the experimental tests in literature. The fire resistance performance of SCC beams was compared with that of normal strength concrete (NSC) beams. The parametric study is conducted using three types of fire insulation, namely Tyfo WR-AFP, CAFCO 300, and Carboline Type-5MD. The results showed that SCC beam has lower fire resistance performance than the NSC beam. However, the incorporation of hybrid fibres allows a 17% improvement in the fire resistance of SCC beams. The use of fire insulations has increased the fire resistance time of SCC beams, and more particularly Carboline Type-5MD insulation with an increase of 28%. The combined use of hybrid fibres and fire insulation improved the fire resistance of SCC beams by 43%.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"103 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141683620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recycling this waste in concrete appears to be one of the best solutions because of its economic and environmental benefits. In this study, the performance of concrete containing plastic waste in the form of fibers and glass waste as a partial replacement for cement was investigated. The effects of both wastes on workability and air content were studied for fresh concrete mixes, as well as their impact on the chloride penetration and carbonation resistance of hardened concrete. The effect of elevated temperature on the compressive strength, weight loss, and ultrasonic pulse velocity of the different mixes was also tested. The results showed that the combination of two wastes in the same mixture contributed to an improvement in the resistance to chloride penetration by 20.5% in the long term. The addition of glass powder to concrete increases the depth of carbonation, whereas the inclusion of plastic fibers reduces the depth of carbonation.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"36 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141345576","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
