Various ensemble learning techniques are employed, including Simple Average Ensemble, Snapshot Ensemble, and Stacked Generalization, to develop predictive models. The models are trained and evaluated using performance metrics such as Root Mean Squared Error, Coefficient of Determination, Overall Index of model performance, Mean Absolute Error, and 95% Uncertainty. The results show that the integrated stacking model (ISM) outperforms other models in terms of predictive accuracy. Furthermore, the SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) technique was used to interpret the ISM model. The analysis reveals that the most influential factors affecting shrinkage predictions include time, aggregate to cement ratio (A/C), superabsorbent polymer (SAP) content, water to binder ratio, cement content, water to cement ratio, and silica fume content. Also, the ISM model was compared with models developed previously by other researchers, namely, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Random Forest (RF), Gradient Boosting (GB), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB). With the lowest RMSE and MAE values, the ISM model has exceptional accuracy, demonstrating its capacity to create predictions that closely resemble observed values. Additionally, it has the highest coefficient of determination value, demonstrating its effectiveness in explaining a sizable percentage of the data variance. The Overall Index (OI) statistic shows that the ISM model performs exceptionally well, indicating that it captures more of the underlying information in the data. Additionally, it displays lower 95% confidence intervals, demonstrating greater assurance in its forecasts.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"18 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141354729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, at present, there are issues with the analysis and solution of the composite beam structure, such as the difficulty in developing a suitable analytical theory and the low degree of refinement achieved by simulation analysis. To accurately grasp the mechanical behavior of the composite beam structure and achieve its refined analysis, this paper proposes a refined spatial grid element analysis method that can simultaneously obtain the internal forces, displacements, and stresses of various parts of a composite beam. Based on the above new method, the effects of geometrical structural factors such as wide-span ratio, high-span ratio, and web thickness with respect to the shear lag effect are analyzed. The distribution law of the shear lag coefficient and its additional deflection are analyzed. The results demonstrate that using this analysis method to calculate and analyze steel-concrete duplex type composite beams can directly obtain the internal forces and displacements of the joints of the composite beam roof, floor, and web. The spatial grid element analysis method provides both the theoretical and practical means to achieve both the overall and local refinement analysis of the composite beam structure.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"55 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141358238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The developed theories account for higher-order variation of transverse shear strain through the depth of the beam and satisfy the stress-free boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the beam. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are distributed and aligned in a polymeric matrix with various reinforcement patterns to create CNTRC porous beams. The material properties of the functionally graded beam determined using the mixture rule are assumed to vary according to the power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. The mathematical models presented in this study are validated through numerical comparison with existing results. The new buckling results of carbon nanotube-reinforced porous beams are analyzed considering the influence of several parameters, including volume fraction, aspect ratios, degree of porosity, and types of reinforcement. The results stipulate that the above parameters play a significant role in the critical buckling load variation. It is proclaimed that the critical buckling load dwindled as porosity increased and that the X-CNT reinforced beam has a high resistance against buckling compared to other reinforcement types.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":" 123","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141374779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Incesu bridge, located in the Ardanuç district of Artvin province, was selected as the case study, as it was completed with low concrete strength. Initially, the bridge was examined, revealing that the piers were inadequate against dynamic, dead, pedestrian, and covering loads. The study concentrated on employing carbon fiber reinforced polymer to reinforce the bridge piers. Various models were wrapped with carbon fiber reinforced polymer in full-length, half-length, and one-meter intervals. In the analysis, it is assumed that the wraps are linked to each other in both principal directions and not detached from one another. Along with the analyses conducted, stress and strain values are presented separately. It was observed that the wrapping effect obtained in small-sized elements in literature could not be obtained in large-sized elements. As the concrete quality improves, the influence of wrapping thickness diminishes. Moreover, the effects of full-length and half-length wrapping are very close to each other, suggesting that half-length wrapping of bridge piers is sufficient. The authors believe that the obtained analysis results will prove beneficial in achieving economic advantages in retrofitting projects within the construction sector.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":" 63","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141374691","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventional experimental methods for assessing these properties are time-consuming and costly. To address this challenge, advanced machine learning techniques have gained prominence in predicting bituminous mix behaviour. In this study, we focus on predicting Marshall Stability (MS) and Flow (MF) of foamed bitumen bound asphalt pavements using essential input parameters: Temperature, Foam Content, Expansion Ratio, and Half-Life. Leveraging a neural network model, accurate prediction equations and surface analyses were developed for optimizing pavement design. Furthermore, integration equations are also introduced to enhance the accuracy of the methodology. Sensitivity and Parametric Analyses provide insights into parameter impacts, and R-squared measures model goodness of fit. The research work presented not only streamlines pavement design but also advances the understanding of intricate input-output relationships in bituminous mixtures.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"8 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141378662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results show that the smaller the curve radius is, the greater the probability of corrugation occurs. The corrugation wavelength range is 40 mm~50 mm, the wave depth range is 0.05 mm~0.1 mm, and the wave depth is relatively small compared with the corrugation wave depth of metro lines, which is in line with the characteristics of the light-load operation of the tram. The formation mechanism of corrugation on modern tram sharp curves can be described as wheel-rail contact creep saturation leads to the generation of corrugation, and the source of creep is related to the guiding mechanism of the longitudinally coupled independent wheelset bogie. The formation of corrugation on the straight line of the modern tram is related to the difference in wheel diameters between the front and rear wheelsets on the same side, which can lead to different longitudinal velocities, thus generating longitudinal creep forces and inducing rail corrugation.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"54 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141102912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, the effect of water on the mechanical performance of the jute fiber composite mortar samples has been presented here. Secondly, the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method has been used to analyze and determine the crack openings (mm), in the deformed specimens that occurred during the flexural tests.Notably, for 0.5% (fiber lengths: 30 mm, 10 mm, 5 mm) and 1.0% (fiber length: 30mm) fiber (with respect to the dry mortar mass) composite mortar samples prepared with the same water amount, exactly the same used for the mortar (without fiber). The reduction in flexural (−1.47 to −2.79 MPa) and compression strengths (−5.4 to −14.01 MPa) have been observed when compared with similar combinations (fiber % and fiber lengths) prepared with different amounts of water for every mixture. Whereas, when these composite mortars are compared with samples prepared with the same average water, increment in flexural strengths (0.24 to 1.45 MPa), while changes in compressive strengths ranging from −1.67 and 6.22 MPa have been noticed.The percentage of water used for the grout preparation is an important factor in influencing the mechanical performance of the composite sample. Therefore, whenever fiber is used during the composite mortar fabrication some amount of extra water is necessary for the mixture preparation.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"57 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141114211","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The special skeleton of SFP provided enhanced durability and resilience, making it a promising option for the construction of road surfaces in high-traffic areas and severe conditions. The main aim of the current research is to investigate the rutting behavior and moisture resilience of SFP-containing sustainable grout using ceramic waste powder (CWP). This research introduced the use of CWP as a replacement for conventional grout (cement) in SFP for the first time. CWP partially replaced cement at ratios of 15, 20, 30, 40, and 50% of the cement weight. Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS) and Hamburg Wheel Tracking Tests (HWTT) were used to evaluate the performance of SFP to reduce the detrimental effect of moisture. The grout modified with CWP shows excellent results in the ITS and Tensile Strength Ratio (TSR), and all modified SFP mixtures give higher values in these tests compared with Control Mix (CM). In the HWTT, the minimum rut depth of the modified SFP was 2.8 mm and 3.10 mm. Compared to CM, rutting decreased by 73%–76% for CWP mixes with 20% and 30% replacement. This indicates the high fluidity of CWP, which enabled it to penetrate all voids in the porous pavement (PA) and form a dense microstructure due to its excellent pozzolanic interaction, making it a strong structure capable of bearing rutting.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"4 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140962573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, this study evaluates the effect of moisture on the developed models to predict the BI and shear wave velocity (Vs), based on the point load index (Is50), dry and saturated tensile strength (Ts-d and Ts-s), and porosity. Gaussian process regression (GPR), multilayer feed-forward neural network (MFFNN), and multiple linear regression (MLR) predictive models were utilized. Microscopic examination of the limestone specimens revealed that calcite is the predominant mineral. It was observed that samples with higher calcite content exhibited greater brittleness and strength properties while having lower porosity. The results obtained from the MLR analysis demonstrated that it is possible to accurately forecast the brittleness index (BI), as well as the dry and saturated shear wave velocities (Vs-d and Vs-s) at the specific sites under investigation. The moisture effect on developed models showed that Vs prediction in dry conditions (Vs-d) was less accurate compared to the saturated conditions (Vs-s). Conversely, the relationships developed for estimating the BI in dry conditions exhibited higher accuracy. The analysis of all model assumptions using MLR indicated that the models could be reliably utilized. However, the MFFNN and GPR methods were found to be more conservative in estimating these properties. Moreover, the study identified the best transfer function and training algorithm for predicting Vs and BI. The evaluation metrics, such as R2 and RMSE revealed that GPR demonstrated higher precision compared to MFFNN and MLR.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"115 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140967989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous studies mainly investigated this failure mode using experimental or numerical investigations but using deterministic approaches. The current research employs Monte Carlo simulations as a robust numerical tool to estimate the interaction buckling resistance. Stochastic variables are defined, encompassing variabilities in geometrical and material properties, as well as local and global imperfections. To facilitate these simulations, a rigorously validated numerical model is employed, utilizing geometrical and materially nonlinear analysis with imperfections (GMNIA). This advanced modeling approach accounts for the complex nonlinearities inherent in the behavior of welded box-section columns. The characteristic resistance derived from the Monte Carlo simulation is compared to 1. test results, 2. analytical buckling resistance according to the Eurocode design approach, and 3. previously proposed deterministic approaches. Within the research program, an improved generalized design formula is developed to estimate the buckling resistance for pure local, global, and interaction buckling modes. The new design equation is compatible with the design rules of the Eurocode and enhances the ease of use of the standard regulations.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"15 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140976062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
