This study investigates the initial stiffness of a cover plate with a single slotted hole. The aim of this paper is to propose an analytical model that predicts the initial stiffness of slotted holes with respect to experimental results obtained on a panel of different geometries. This approach makes it possible to evaluate the effects of the end distances on the bending of the plate compared to the bearing under the bolt. A large panel of geometries is tested to quantify the experimental value of initial stiffness using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique compared to Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) sensors. To evaluate the initial stiffness, a method of processing experimental data is developed that allows a reproducible determination of stiffnesses. An analytical model is then proposed based on the improvement of existing models available in the literature. It is validated for different specimen geometries considering the contribution to the initial stiffness due to bending, shearing and support of the steel plate under the bolt. The comparisons show that the proposed analytical model can predict the initial stiffness of different geometries of tested specimens with slotted holes.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"7 17","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140982202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach, based on Eurocode 03's component method, offers efficient analytical formulas for accurately determining the loaded face's stiffness. A comparison with existing methods demonstrates its remarkable simplicity and efficiency, allowing a simple beam model to represent the RHS column's behavior with all relevant parameters considered. Comparison of the new approach to existing ones from the literature demonstrates their reliability and efficiency. Furthermore, when compared to 32 experimental tests presenting nearly the entire range of probable connection configurations, as well as attachment techniques commonly used in construction practice, the margin of error does not exceed 12 percent on average and a maximum of less than 25 percent.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"5 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140982403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concept of symmetry as a quantitative property instead of a binary question of 'yes' or 'no' is widely accepted and thoroughly investigated, for example, in molecular physics but also in engineering sciences, mainly in chemical engineering. Similarly to most of the articles written on this topic, our method is also based on the comparison of specific metrics of the analyzed structure and a reference one, i.e., which possesses the desired (perfect) symmetry. The deviation of the analyzed (imperfect) structure from the reference structure is quantified by one scalar. The novelty in our approach is that we consider not just the relative position of the nodes but also the normal stiffness of the truss members, even for structures with higher-order, i.e., polyhedral symmetries. For both geometric and material properties to be accounted for, the eigenvalues of the stiffness matrix were chosen as metrics. The difficulty lies in finding the reference structure which will be carried out based on energy principles.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"2 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141020525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The jacket structure as a truss shape structure is not deformed easily and has the advantage of keeping the structure stable under wind load. The offshore jacket structures are subjected to unstable repetitive loads such as wind, and wave loads in the deep sea. These harsh environments lead to the deterioration of material performance and fatigue failure with cracks in the structure. It is crucial to locate fatigue cracks since they might compromise a structure's overall stability.In this study, fatigue life and crack initiation for different braced jacket structures were investigated. First, 3D non-steady heat conduction analysis and thermal elastic-plastic analysis were performed to reproduce the initial state of the weld joint in the jacket structure. The heat history obtained from the 3D non-steady heat conduction analysis was enforced as an input in thermal elastic-plastic analysis to calculate welding deformation and residual stress. Next, the fatigue FE analysis of the jacket welding structure was carried out using the residual stress and welding deformation as initial values along with the external cyclic loadings. The 3D fatigue FE analysis employed cyclic hysteresis constitutive equations and fatigue damage theory to calculate the fatigue life and crack initiation. The 3D fatigue FE results were compared with the S-N curve by European code 3 and the hot spot stress (HSS) method. The results show that the 3D fatigue FE method effectively calculates the fatigue life and finds crack initiation.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"4 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140653270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first serious research into the impact of railway traffic on the environment appeared after the year 2000. So far, there have been few studies, the main shortcoming of which is a lack of understanding about pollutant migration. With this in mind, in this paper, an investigation and control of the railway track with regard to the presence, content and migration paths of heavy metals was provided. For the research purposes, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and optical emission spectrometry with induced coupled plasma were used. It was found that the maximum allowable values were exceeded for cadmium, cobalt, copper, zinc, nickel, vanadium, barium, chromium and iron. In the course of determining the amount of these elements in the railway track, there was also evidence of significant metal infiltration into the lower layers. This indicated the ability of heavy metals to migrate, even through mechanically compacted soil. Detailed knowledge of these issues is of huge importance, which enables the selection of adequate techniques to prevent the migration of heavy metals into the lower layers of the ground and the surrounding soil, among which the elements of Low Impact Development technology stand out in recent years, which could find a very wide and effective application in railway engineering.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"51 39","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140662142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, premature structural failures and low durability are one of the main problems in pavement engineering today. The action of loads produced by traffic, exposure to environmental factors and the inadequacy of conventional designs of asphalt pavements are some of the main problems associated with the durability of the pavement. The modification of asphalt binders is an alternative that has been used for some years to improve the properties of bituminous material. Among the modifying materials are elastomers, a class of polymers with elastic properties that can be heat-treated. In this study, the asphalt was modified by wet means by adding 5, 10 and 15% of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) by weight of the binder. Subsequently, standard samples were prepared with the characterized constituents and mixtures with the modified asphalt cement. Consequently, tests were carried out to obtain the optimal mixture that improves the properties of conventional pavement. The results show that the optimal TPU addition content is 5%. With this percentage, the modified binder presented a greater elastic recovery of up to 5.60% and a reduction of up to 42.6% in penetration compared to conventional asphalt. In addition, using the Marshall method, it was determined that the stability of the modified mixtures was much higher than that of standard mixtures for light, medium and heavy traffic; so, they will have a higher resistance to deformation and better fatigue behavior.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":" 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140686292","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Simultaneously, incorporating nanoparticles as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) offers significant benefits. Introducing nano-sized iron particles (Fe2O3) into the cement paste results in a compact microstructure, improving strength, and durability. In this study, we investigate the bending behavior of concrete slabs reinforced with Fe2O3 nanoparticles using the non-local quasi-3D shear deformation theory based on Eringen's non-local differential constitutive relations. To characterize the elastic material properties of the nanocomposite, we employ Eshelby's homogenization model. In order to extend the applicability of our findings, we assume that the concrete plate rests on Kerr's foundation, which includes a shear layer connected to upper and lower springs. By deriving the equations of motion using the principle of virtual work, we establish a comprehensive framework for analyzing the bending of the concrete plate. To solve the equilibrium equations for a simply supported concrete plate, we present Navier's analytical solutions. Our investigation considers various influential parameters, such as the concentration of Fe2O3 nanoparticles in the concrete matrix, the elastic constants of the soil medium, different types of bending loads, and size-dependent nonlocal parameters. One of the most captivating findings of this study is that the incorporation of 30 wt% of iron nanoparticles in concrete leads to a remarkable improvement of 60% in the elastic properties of the material. Additionally, this same amount of iron nanoparticles has shown the potential to reduce the deflection of thin plates by over 60%.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":" 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140686577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In recent years, the number of railway bridges subjected to over-height collision forces has increased. These collisions damage the bridge and affect the safety of the running train. In this investigation, first, a 3D GT26 train-track-bridge interaction model was created to study the effects of collision forces applied to the bridge superstructure and not to the bridge piers as a novelty of this research using the finite element analysis. Then, the dynamic responses of the railway bridge due to the GT26 train load and subjected to over-height collision forces were obtained. Finally, the different sensitivity analyses describe that changing the length of the collision area, the bridge span, and the value of collision forces affect the dynamic responses of the bridge in the contact area. The results show that maximum lateral displacement of the concrete girder in case of assuming the GT26 train 3D model plus over-height collision force is 8.88% less than the case in which considering only freight train axle-load and same over-height collision force apply to the bridge superstructure, and its value reduces from 45 mm to 41 mm. The maximum lateral displacement of the bridge deck is reduced by about 71% by increasing the collision area length from 0.2 m to 1.2 m and at the impact area rises about 43.5% by changing collision speed from 48 km/hr to 144 km/hr as collision force from 7753 kN to 13370 kN.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":" 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140687998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sDE is the same as the original version of the differential evolution algorithm, except the user does not have to choose the best values of mutation constant and crossover constant for each optimization problem. Therefore, the optimization process is now very simple as it remains only one parameter (i.e. the population size) in the algorithm, besides the stopping criterion (e.g. number of iterations). It also consumes less computation time than the original differential evolution as it is not necessary to tune the mutation and crossover constants. In this study, the proposed technique is applied to three constrained optimizations, three engineering design problems, and six planar and spatial trusses under frequency constraints. Despite the very simple characteristics of the proposed technique, sDE gives promising results in comparison with other results in the literature.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"5 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140722906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the threats is the decrease of lateral connectivity: due to the erosion in the mainstem riverbed and the sedimentation of the floodplain and its channels, the bed elevation gap slowly increases between the main channel and the side branches and oxbows of the floodplain. Without revitalization measures, this progress predicts severe ecological consequences. As an example, and as a continuation of our earlier work, we considered the Gemenc floodplain forest along the Danube, in Hungary. We set up a two-dimensional coupled hydrodynamic and sediment transport computational model to describe floodplain deposition dynamics. Model validation was carried out with historical data, i.e., two ground elevation sets measured in 1990 and in 2009, respectively. Our aim was 1. to show, how coarse resolution measured data can be used for validating a large-scale model in terms of sediment deposition processes, and 2. to interpret the first results on some areas exposed to strong deposition, after validation. Showing good agreements in three pillars: magnitude of estimation, spatial tendencies and spatial patterns, the model was deemed valid. We were also able to observe a clear gradient, along which areas could be categorized with high, medium and small extent of sediment deposition. With this model, the sediment dynamics in the Gemenc floodplain forest can be assessed, with special attention to the impact analysis of restoration measures to improve lateral connectivity conditions.","PeriodicalId":512221,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Civil Engineering","volume":"194 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140748412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
