Analyzing and understanding the current dynamics of the rural world, with all its new peculiarities, is fundamentally important for defining public policies aimed at sustainable and healthy rural development. The pursuit of universalizing sanitation services is a commendable goal of the new regulatory framework, aligning with the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals. \u0000 \u0000Method: Hypothetical-deductive approach and case study focused on the structural conditions of sanitation in the municipalities of Brejo Grande/SE and Ilha das Flores/SE, and the effectiveness perspectives of federal legislation for the universalization of sanitation. \u0000 \u0000Results and Discussion: In recent years, the municipalities of Brejo Grande/SE and Ilha das Flores/SE have witnessed significant governmental efforts to achieve the universalization of basic sanitation. These governmental actions have been crucial for improving the living and health conditions of the population, as well as for promoting sustainable development in these communities. \u0000 \u0000Implications of the research: The research results indicate that the studied municipalities show deficiencies in the provision of basic sanitation, especially in rural areas. \u0000 \u0000Originality/Value: The results suggest that effective management of basic sanitation, not only in Brejo Grande/SE and Ilha das Flores/SE but in general, requires careful planning to achieve universalization. It is essential for public managers to recognize basic sanitation as a fundamental human right, going beyond mere water supply and including its other dimensions.

We also investigate the contestation between the medical knowledge of midwives and the local knowledge of traditional birth attendants in postnatal and infant care.\u0000 \u0000Method: The research method uses a qualitative approach with case studies and data collection through interviews, observation, and documentation.\u0000 \u0000Results and conclusion: The results identified three patterns of knowledge contestation between midwives and shaman uncles, namely domination, hybridization, and coexistence. Domination occurs in the context of pregnancy, where the knowledge of the shaman Pamana dominates the midwife, while hybridization occurs during the delivery process with collaboration between the midwife and the shaman Pamana. The pattern of coexistence illustrates that the knowledge of midwives and shaman Pamana is present together without interfering with each other in postnatal care.\u0000 \u0000Research implications: This research is relevant to the maternal and newborn health system in Gowa Regency with the following implications: 1) Integration of medical and local knowledge is needed in the practice of midwives and birth attendants, emphasizing the need for holistic training for health service providers; 2) Collaboration between midwives and traditional birth attendants can improve the safety of mothers and babies; 3) Cultural awareness is important to improve quality of care; 4) Culturally sensitive practice guidelines are necessary for safe and effective practice; 5) Public advocacy and education can increase awareness of appropriate care.\u0000 \u0000Originality/value: This research reveals the dynamics of contestation between medical and local knowledge in maternal and neonatal health services, providing new insights into their interactions. Informants for this study were selected purposively, focusing on individuals knowledgeable about beauty, history, and culture within the Banjar community.\u0000 \u0000Results and Discussion: The findings of the research reveal that Banjar women's perspectives on beauty can be categorized into two main themes: physical or external beauty, and inner beauty. Physical beauty pertains to the outward appearance of women, emphasizing attributes such as cleanliness, fragrance, and radiance of the skin. In the Banjar language, beauty (bungas) is synonymous with a woman possessing immaculate, fragrant, and luminous skin. Hence, maintaining cleanliness and fragrance to achieve a radiant and fresh appearance is the primary objective of their body care practices. To attain physical beauty, Banjar women engage in various beauty treatments aligned with their beauty ideals. These treatments aim to achieve clean, smooth, and radiant skin.\u0000 \u0000Research Implications: From the presentation of the research results above, several conclusions can be drawn as follows: First, Banjar women's views on beauty are generally divided into two meanings: physical or outer beauty and inner beauty. The first meaning, physical or outer beauty, refers to a woman’s beauty directed towards her physical form. Beauty (known as “bungas” in Banjar language) for Banjar women is interpreted as having clean, fragrant, and radiant skin. Cleanliness and fragrance of the body, making the body appear radiant and glowing, are their main goals in performing body beauty care to look beautiful and fresh. Second, to achieve physical (outer) beauty, Banjar women engage in beauty care with various forms of beauty treatments according to their conception of beauty, which is to obtain clean, smooth, and radiant skin. The practices performed by Banjar women are related to their beliefs or faith.\u0000 \u0000Originality/Value: As part of ethnoscience, the study of ethnobeauty, which combines the words “ethno” and “beauty,” literally means the beauty of a particular society or ethnic group. Thus, ethnobeauty research can be defined as an effort to describe a society’s knowledge system regarding beauty and beauty care practices, including myths, beliefs, culture, and beauty care
