The main objective of thisstudy was to explore how the Sri Lankan school libraries, especially those in the western province,managed the challenges faced during the Covid phase and also during the years 2020-2022, owingto the prevailing economic crisis. By the year 2022 Sri Lanka was facing a severe economic crisisas a result of the depletion of the country's foreign reserves, which resulted in the shortages of food,fuel, medication, cement, and other essential items. The school libraries too faced manychallenging issues due to the economic crisis, with regard to the purchasing of books and readingmaterials and the training of staf . Therefore, a program was organized for a group of students inthe Western Province so as to encourage them to read and develop their skills in creative writingand critical thinking.","PeriodicalId":503765,"journal":{"name":"IASL Annual Conference Proceedings","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139231747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A teaching project on documentary sources kept in ecclesiastical archives is herewith presented with the aim to be implemented in cooperation with the school library. The Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church published a circular letter on the pastoral function of ecclesiastical archives in which it is stated that archives were considered to be the places of memory of Christian communities and cultural factors for the new evangelisation. The ancient documents 'bear witness to the life and works of the church and together form a unique, essential and irreplaceable documentation, which is primarily intended to serve the church itself but also deserves to be preserved for the benefit of Historical Studies'. However, given their nature, these archives represent a very suitable source to develop school projects that can be carried out both in classrooms and in libraries.","PeriodicalId":503765,"journal":{"name":"IASL Annual Conference Proceedings","volume":"27 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139232691","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Portugal has been following these guidelinesand commitments, publishing legislation with a comprehensive approach to the concept of‘inclusion’ and monitoring its implementation in educational communities. School libraries, asstructures of the Ministry of Education, integrate, in their action plans, reading promotion projectsaimed at specific audiences. The main aim is the integration of all students, creating conditions forthem to fully enjoy the benefits of reading. In this article, we present the results of the project \"AllTogether We Can Read\", implemented in 62 schools over the last five years. Although there areareas for improvement, the evaluation reports point to a strong impact of the project in improvingstudent learning and af irming the school library as a structure for pedagogical innovation andknowledge induction.","PeriodicalId":503765,"journal":{"name":"IASL Annual Conference Proceedings","volume":"176 3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139228820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fundamental rights of children are rarely addressed in discussions ofintellectual freedom, and in Canada and in the United States, children’s intellectual freedom rightsincreasingly are being curtailed by politicians, courts, school administrators, and sometimes byteacher-librarians themselves. There are resources that teacher-librarians can utilize when dealingwith issues related to intellectual freedom, especially when the rights of children are at risk. Onevaluable resource is a national database of library challenges. Recognizing children’s rights wouldmean including the interests of children and young adults (from birth to age 18) in the discussionsand deliberations related to intellectual freedom and freedom of expression.","PeriodicalId":503765,"journal":{"name":"IASL Annual Conference Proceedings","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139234385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
