However, adolescent females, particularly in low-and middle-income countries, often face challenges related to malnutrition and poor diet quality. This study assesses the nutritional status and diet quality of female adolescents in selected government secondary schools in Odeda Local Government Area, Ogun State, Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed, involving 250 respondents selected through multistage random sampling. Data on socio-demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, and dietary intake were collected through questionnaires. The findings revealed that most respondents were in the late adolescence stage with notable variations in parental income, indicating potential economic improvements. A prevalent issue was the high proportion of overweight cases among respondents, coupled with suboptimal dietary diversity and excessive consumption of carbohydrate-rich foods. Additionally, significant deficiencies in essential nutrients such as Vitamin A, fiber, calcium, and vitamin C were observed. Accurate and representative dietary data are essential to scientists, policy makers, and many other stakeholders. This is because it is important for planning, developing and evaluating nutrition intervention programs. Despite the importance of dietary assessment data for a broad range of policy and research applications, there are some problems/challenges encountered when it comes to the assessment of dietary data in Nigeria. Currently, there is a lack of time-relevant dietary data in Nigerian on which the government can base their programme on. There is a general lack of commitment by government at all levels such that researchers are not given adequate financial support. The poor funding/lack of funds for conducting dietary assessment research, variation in food preparation / the use of non-standard recipes, culture/language barrier, time burden, insecurity and lack of comprehensive country-specific food composition data are some of the barriers/problems to dietary data collection in Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":503111,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Nutrition","volume":"10 15","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141229168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Malnutrition in cancer patients leads to decreased response to therapy and tolerance, shorter remission periods, worse rates of survival, and higher risk of adverse effects, resulting in higher healthcare costs. Cancer patients often experience psychological discomfort, which can hinder their capacity to oversee self-care and attend therapy. This can lead to lower food intake and weight loss. Proper eating can help patients retain strength and energy while lowering the likelihood of treatment-related adverse effects. We would have the safest path to health if we could provide each person with the appropriate amount of nutrition and exercise, not too little and not too much. Leukaemia represents approximately 3.5% of all cancer cases and is characterized by the buildup of aberrant white blood cells. Pancytopenia might arise from reduced cell formation or increased destruction. The results show that a considerable portion of the patient population is experiencing challenges in meeting their nutritional needs, as seen by the prevalence of low to extremely low average calorie intake. According to these results, those who consume more calories on average are more likely to have higher body mass indices.","PeriodicalId":503111,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Nutrition","volume":"12 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141234067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dietary modification has been involved in managing and reducing the risk of CVD. The current study aimed to investigate the association of obesity and nutritional status with clinical characteristics, echocardiographic changes, and clinical outcomes in a random sample of 54 individuals aged between 30-60 years enrolled from the outpatient cardiology clinic in Ain Shams University hospital. Study participants were classified into five groups according to heart disease status (normal control, metabolic syndrome, risk factor, compensated CVD, decompensated CVD). A standardized 24-four-hour questionnaire was used to determine dietary intake. Anthropometric measurements, biochemical analysis and echocardiography examination were done for all study subjects. Overall and central obesity was highly prevalent among the metabolic syndrome, risk factor and decompensated CVD groups compared to the other groups. We found that obese individuals with poor nutritional status have the highest comorbidity burden, the most adverse cardiac remodeling, and the least favorable composite outcome. Therefore, increasing public awareness of healthy lifestyle and dietary patterns to enhance the prevention of CVD and associated risk factors.","PeriodicalId":503111,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Nutrition","volume":"52 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141412964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of ninety-six day-old broilers (Ross 308) were fed diets containing biochar and clay. Treatments 1, 2, 3 and 4 were composed of T1(control), T2(5% biochar), T3 (5% clay) and T4 (2.5% biochar + 2.5% clay) in a completely randomized design with three replicates, each consisting of eight birds. The growth parameters were measured during the feeding trial and organ weight parameters were measured at the end of the experiment. The data collected were subjected to one-way analysis of variance to determine the significant differences among the dietary treatments. The results showed that treatments were significantly ( p < 0.05) different in final weight, total weight gain, average daily weight gain, total feed intake, average daily feed intake, feed cost per kg weight gain and kidney weight. Treatment 4 had the highest final weight value of 1.4067kg, highest total weight gain of 1.3597kg, highest average daily weight gain of 0.0242kg, highest total feed intake of 5.1097kg, highest average daily feed intake of 0.0910kg and highest feed cost of N3227.21. However, there were no significant ( p > 0.05) differences in initial weight, feed conversion ratio, feed cost per kg weight gain, heart, liver, pancreas, gizzard, spleen and lung weights. While Campylobacter coli (C. coli) is responsible for around 5% of cases, Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) accounts for more than 90% of cases. Human campylobacteriosis can occur mostly by handling raw chicken carcasses improperly or eating undercooked chicken. There is still a significant rate of Campylobacter detection in carcasses after chilling or freezing, even though there are controls in place to reduce cross-contamination. To determine whether or not ozone (0.5 ppm) at refrigeration temperature for 1/2 and 1 hr effectively killed or reduced Campylobacter on chickens, this investigation was conducted. Thirty samples tested positive for Campylobacter and were exposed to ozonated water. After treatment, the percentage of negative samples was 10% after 30 minutes and 63.33% after 60 minutes, according to the data. From a public health perspective, the decline in positive percentage samples was quite noteworthy. The results demonstrated that after 60 minutes at refrigeration temperature, the bacterial counts decreased by 2-4 Log10 (CFU/mL). Also, treatments with ozone for 30 and 60 minutes were tested for their ability to kill Campylobacter. The results showed that 63.33% and 100% of the samples were negative after the treatments. Importantly, this proves that ozone effectively killed Campylobacter even when organic material concentrations were high, which has important implications for public health.","PeriodicalId":503111,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Nutrition","volume":"8 51","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141230829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
