Recently, mangosteen fruit has received a great deal of attention due to its therapeutic properties in treating different diseases throughout the world. However, scientific studies in Egypt on the effects of mangosteen in vivo are very rare. This work aims to assess the protective effect of mangosteen fruit extract on three doses (1, 2 and 3ml/kg b.w) on benign prostatic hyperplasia induced by testosterone in male rats. Thirty-six rats weighing between 190-200g, were divided into six groups (6 rats for each); one served as the normal control group (N.C) (-ve), BPH (+ve), BPH+ zinc (20 mg/kg b.w), BPH + MFE 1 (1ml/kg b.w), BPH + MFE 2 (2ml/kg b.w) and BPH + MFE 3 (3ml/kg b.w), To induce BPH, rats were injected with testosterone (5 mg/kg b.w) daily. On the 29 th all rats were sacrificed, and their serum and prostate were analyzed. The results showed that mangosteen with different doses (1,2 and 3ml/kg b.w) significantly diminished the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia by decreasing (prostate volume, prostate weight, prostate weight index, and testosterone levels) and increasing the levels of LH, FSH, and total protein in serum in all protective groups which received different doses of MFE in comparison with BPH (+ve) untreated. In conclusion, mangosteen fruit extract at different levels has some significant protective effects on reproductive functions in male rats.","PeriodicalId":503111,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Nutrition","volume":"21 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140440215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are many determinants of malnutrition among school-going children. These include poverty, illiteracy amongst parents and environmental factors, diseases, and proper diet. This is an interesting work aimed to analyze the nutritional status of primary and secondary school children in an urban region of Mardan, the second largest city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK). A cross-sectional study was performed in a primary and high school of Govt sector in an urban region of Takht Bhai Mardan. A Total of 1500 children between the ages of 4-15 years were studied. A systematic random sampling technique was applied for sample collection. A total of 1500 children between the ages of 4-15 were analyses for this study. Out of 1500 school going students 600(40%) were found positive and 900(60%) were found normal according to age. Gender wise analysis shows that in male students 210(35%) were found positive for stunting and 150 (25%) male students were underweight. In overall female students 135(22.5%) were found stunting and 105 (17.5%) were found underweight. According to age group wise between 4 to 10 years 90 (10%) female students were found stunting and 60(6.6%) were found underweight. While in the age of 11 to 15 years 48 (5.3%) students were stunting and 42 (4.6%) students were underweighted. The difference in stunted and underweight showed more boys than girls. In the Pre nursery group more boys were stunted than girls, the ratio being 70%:30%, on the contrary underweight was more in boys than in girls, with the ratio of 57%:43%. In the Primary section both stunting and underweight were more in boys as compared to the girls. The ratios were 54.8%:45.2% and 82.9%:17% respectively.","PeriodicalId":503111,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Nutrition","volume":"95 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139157225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forty-eight male albino rats were used in this study. The rats were divided into two main groups, as follows: The first main group of six rats was fed a basal diet (as a negative control group). The second main group (42 rats) was injected with CCl4 in paraffin oil (50% v/v, 4 ml/kg) by subcutaneous injection to induce acute damage in the liver. The rats in the second main group were divided into7 subgroups (6 rats each) as follows: Subgroup (1): fed on a basal diet (BD) only as a control positive group (+ve). Subgroups 2 and 3 were fed diets containing 1% and 2% choline chloride, respectively. Subgroups 4 and 5 were fed diets containing 5% and 7.5% Zizyphus spina-christi , respectively. Subgroups 6 and 7 were fed diets containing the combination of choline chloride and Zizyphus spina-christi (1% choline chloride and 5% Zizyphus spina-christi) and (2% choline chloride and 7.5% Zizyphus spina-christi) , respectively. The results indicated that injected rats with CCl4 increased serum glucose, uric acid, urea nitrogen, creatinine, cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol and VLDL-cholesterol, while decreasing feed intake, serum HDL-cholesterol, as compared to non-injected rats. Treating acute liver disease rats with diets containing the two levels of Ziziphus spina-Christi leaves, choline, and their combinations improved all of these parameters and the histopathological changes in the kidney as compared to non-treated rats. Conclusion : Ziziphus spina-Christi leaves, choline, and their combinations can be used to reduce the side effects of acute liver diseases.","PeriodicalId":503111,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Nutrition","volume":"51 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139188092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study assessed the socio-economic, dietary, and anthropometric indices of selected households during the hit of COVID-19 in Ogun state. The study was cross-sectional in design. A multistage sampling technique was used to select 300 households from the three senatorial districts. Data were obtained on socio-economic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, and dietary intake using a pre-tested structured questionnaire, standard anthropometric procedures, and food frequency questionnaire respectively. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, means, standard deviations, correlation, t-test, and Chi-Square. More than half (58.6%) of the respondents had no source of income during the lockdown, 37.7% had tertiary education and 26.4% earned ₦100, 000 - ₦199, 000 annually. The nutritional status of the household revealed that 29.9% of children 6-9 years and 23.5% of children 10-12 years were stunted, 24.7% of the mothers, and 28.3% of the fathers were overweight. The perceived adequacy of food consumed showed that 42% reported a reduction in the quantity of food consumed during the lockdown, 52%, 57.7%, and 63% perceived that their diet was inadequate in protein, fruits, vegetables, and dairy respectively. The emergence of COVID-19 threatened the socioeconomic, nutritional status, and food consumption pattern of the studied house, there is, therefore, a need for coping strategies that will improve nutrition and health status in cases of emergencies.","PeriodicalId":503111,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Nutrition","volume":"49 20","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139237587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
