One of the main issues that appears while drilling such wells is caused by the high values of friction factor which cause high values of torque and drag. One of the suggested solutions is to use a protective sliding ring made from materials such as POM, Teflon and PA6 in combination with lubricants added to a polymer mud system. First, measurements were conducted on a lubricity tester to choose the best material and, after finishing, a mechanical wear test was conducted on a specially designed device to measure mechanical wear. Results showed that Teflon showed lower values of friction factor in comparison to steel and the mechanical wear was minimal. The lowest value of friction force was recorded for blocks made from Teflon in tested mud systems. It is also noticeable that, in polymer mud with weighting additives and lubricant, the value of the friction force is higher than in polymer mud with lubricant only.","PeriodicalId":502388,"journal":{"name":"Applied Sciences","volume":"42 23","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141648894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A series of molecular models of graphene-modified asphalt were constructed and validated using thermodynamic parameters. The impact of the graphene (PGR) size and number of layers on its interaction with asphalt components were examined, and the self-healing process and mechanism of action of PGR-modified asphalt were analyzed. The results demonstrated that the size and number of layers of PGR significantly influenced its interaction with asphalt components, with polar components demonstrating a stronger affinity for PGR. When the size and number of layers of PGR were held constant, the interfacial binding energy between it and ACR-modified asphalt was the highest, followed by SBS-modified asphalt, and 70# matrix asphalt exhibited the lowest interfacial binding strength. This interfacial binding strength is primarily attributed to intermolecular van der Waals interactions. Furthermore, the incorporation of multi-layer PGR can markedly enhance the mechanical properties of matrix asphalt, whereas small-sized PGR is more efficacious in improving the low-temperature performance of polymer-modified asphalt. PGR can act as a bridge between asphalt molecules through rapid heat transfer and π-π stacking with aromatic ring-containing substances, which markedly increases the free diffusion ability of asphalt molecules, shortens the healing time of asphalt, and enhances the collective self-healing performance of asphalt. This study provides an essential theoretical basis for understanding the mechanism and application of PGR in asphalt modification.","PeriodicalId":502388,"journal":{"name":"Applied Sciences","volume":"17 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141648267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, identifying internal defects in welds through radiographic testing (RT) is critical for a visual and quantitative evaluation of weld defects. In this study, we developed a device that can automatically inspect the circumferential connection between pipes by applying a digital radiography testing (DRT) technique that can convert radiation signals into real-time electrical signals by using a digital detector array (DDA). Gamma rays were used to minimize spatial constraints in the inspection environment and optimization was performed to satisfy quality requirements set by international standards. Furthermore, FLUKA simulation was performed to predict radiation intensity for accurate radiation leakage identification to enable the shielding design to be supplemented with lead rubber. This measure considerably reduces the safe distance for radiation leakage during field testing. The results confirmed the feasibility of a novel automated inspection technique that integrates automatic inspection devices and ensures safety using radiation, the byproduct of which is a hazardous material.","PeriodicalId":502388,"journal":{"name":"Applied Sciences","volume":"5 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141648403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While total knee arthroplasty is an effective treatment for advanced stages of KOA, it may not be suitable for earlier stages or younger patients. Supervised exercise therapy has proven to be the first-line treatment of preference in tackling pain and disability caused by KOA. However, the high intensities required to induce positive muscle adaptations are not indicated in this population, as this is often accompanied by pain, discomfort, and frustration, leaving low-load resistance training as the only feasible method of treatment. Recently, the use of blood flow restriction training has begun to emerge as a substitute for high-load resistance training. With BFRT, a cuff is applied around the proximal aspect of the affected limb, causing partial arterial and full venous occlusion, thereby inducing localized hypoxia and the accumulation of metabolites, mimicking the effects of high-load resistance training, albeit with low loads. Consequently, BFRT might offer a suitable and more effective alternative for KOA patients who are not (yet) eligible for TKA compared to traditional exercise therapy. This review aims to summarize the current evidence as regards the application of Blood Flow Restriction in exercise therapy for knee osteoarthritis patients, with particular consideration of the underlying mechanisms and its safety, as well as general guidelines for practical implementation in clinical practice. In doing so, this narrative review aims to create a framework for translating from theory into practice.","PeriodicalId":502388,"journal":{"name":"Applied Sciences","volume":"15 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141648817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Contact image sensors (CISs), commonly used in flatbed scanners, have been proposed as a suitable technology for layer-wise characterization of contour deviations, paving the way for the application of corrective measures. Nevertheless, despite the high resolution of CIS digital images, the accurate characterization of layer contours in MEX/P is affected by contrast patterns between the layer and the background. Conventional edge-recognition algorithms struggle to comprehensively characterize layer contours, thereby diminishing the reliability of deviation measurements. In this work, we introduce a novel approach to precisely locate contour points in the context of MEX/P based on evaluating the similarity between the grayscale pattern near a particular tentative contour point and a previously defined gradient reference pattern. Initially, contrast patterns corresponding to various contour orientations and layer-to-background distances are captured. Subsequently, contour points are identified and located in the images, with coordinate measuring machine (CMM) verification serving as a ground truth. This information is then utilized by an adaptive edge-detection algorithm (AEDA) designed to identify boundaries in manufactured layers. The proposed method has been evaluated on test targets produced through MEX/P. The results indicate that the average deviation of point position compared to that achievable with a CMM in a metrology laboratory ranges from 8.02 µm to 13.11 µm within the experimental limits. This is a substantial improvement in the reliability of contour reconstruction when compared to previous research, and it could be crucial for implementing routines for the automated detection and correction of geometric deviations in AM parts.","PeriodicalId":502388,"journal":{"name":"Applied Sciences","volume":"34 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141646463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, a non-aflatoxigenic strain, A. flavus ATCC 9643 (ATCC 9643), was evaluated for its ability to competitively inhibit the growth of an aflatoxigenic strain, A. flavus ATCC 22546 (ATCC 22546), and mitigate AFB production in ATCC 22546 during competitive growth. To comparatively analyze the suppressive effect of ATCC 9643 on ATCC 22546, a non-aflatoxigenic strain (A. flavus ATCC 96045, known as AF36) was used as a positive control in some experiments. The two non-aflatoxigenic strains did not produce AFB1 or AFB2 owing to the absence of several AFB biosynthesis-related genes, especially aflK and aflL, which encode versicolorin B synthase and desaturase, respectively. To create a competitive growth environment, ATCC 9643 and ATCC 22546 were co-inoculated into a solid agar medium, and they grew at similar rates when added at a 1:1 ratio. Increasing the inoculum rate of ATCC 9643 (1:1, 1:3, 1:5) dramatically inhibited ATCC 22546 growth, and AFB production was effectively decreased by about 84%, 95%, and 97% by treatment with ATCC 9643. On rice, ATCC 22546 attenuated ATCC 9643 growth only when the rice was submerged in distilled water, whereas agar addition enhanced it. Taken together, ATCC 9643 is a promising candidate biological agent for suppressing aflatoxigenic A. flavus strain growth and alleviating AFB contamination. Further studies on AFB reduction in crop fields, including cotton-cultivation and maize-cultivation fields, are warranted.","PeriodicalId":502388,"journal":{"name":"Applied Sciences","volume":"38 34","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141644898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main research results are as follows: (1) The stope and waste rock’s geotechnical, physical, and mechanical characteristics were gathered and examined; the geotechnical and mechanical characteristics found in this study largely satisfy the criteria for slope stability analysis. (2) Cemented paste backfill (CPB) materials were made of mine waste rock and fly ash at a desired ratio, mixed with cement as a bond material, and were tested in the laboratory, using a combination of cement percentages of 6%, 8%, and 10% for the cement content and 25%, 30%, 35%, and 40% for the fly ash content, to determine the ideal mix for artificial ground support in underground mines, taking into account both economic and performance factors. (3) By using this model, the changes in CPB strength were investigated under various factors influencing the cement ratio, and limit equilibrium modeling was used with the FLAC-Slope 8.1 program with different cement paste backfill ratio to calculate the factor of safety for each cement percentage after 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, and 28 days of curing time (CT) to obtain the optimum compressive strength and shear straight of cemented paste backfill with high paste fill shear strength on the slope. (4) The research results are of great significance for the safety of important facilities in open-pit mines and provide a basis for the design and safety implementation of open-pit slope engineering.","PeriodicalId":502388,"journal":{"name":"Applied Sciences","volume":"101 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141647153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three distinct materials—waste foundry sand (WFS), washing aggregate sludge (WAS), and composted biosolids (CBS)—were strategically combined to develop this innovative Technosol. The formulation process involved a comprehensive analysis of their physical–chemical properties, mineral composition, leachate quality, and a series of geotechnical assessments to ensure compliance with landfill top cover construction standards. The blend 90WFS/10WAS showed optimal geotechnical properties for constructing a protective layer, including maximum dry density (1.77 g cm−3), void ratio (0.4), CBR index (23.2), cohesive strength (40 kPa), internal friction (ϕ = 30°), and permeability coefficient (k = 1.48 × 10−6 cm s−1). Further enhancement was achieved by adding 10% CBS, resulting in the development of a functional organo-mineral topsoil horizon (81WFS/9WAS/10CBS). Importantly, leachate analysis confirmed the negligible environmental footprint of this Technosol. Moreover, a pot-based experiment with Brassica juncea planting validated its capacity to support plant growth and establish a vegetative cover on the landfill surface.","PeriodicalId":502388,"journal":{"name":"Applied Sciences","volume":"44 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141647377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model combines the advantages of self-attention mechanisms and convolutional neural networks. It captures global dependencies through multi-head self-attention and utilizes convolutional layers to extract local features, thereby enhancing the model’s adaptability to dynamic changes in time series. The LSTM component handles long-term dependencies, optimizing the coherence and stability of predictions. Additionally, an adaptive feature fusion weight network is introduced to further improve the model’s recognition and utilization efficiency of key features. Experimental data come from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration buoy data, covering wave height, wind speed, and other data from key maritime areas. Evaluation metrics include Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), and Coefficient of Determination (R2), ensuring a comprehensive assessment of model performance. The results show that the Conformer-LSTM model outperforms traditional LSTM, CNN, and CNN-LSTM models at multiple sites, confirming its potential in wave height prediction.","PeriodicalId":502388,"journal":{"name":"Applied Sciences","volume":"41 48","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141645086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the identification methods for principal impact factors and the examination of the relationship between seismic energy and other source parameters have not been extensively explored to conduct dynamic risk management. This study aims to quantify impact risk factors and discriminate hazardous high-energy seismic events. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and entropy weight method (EWM) are utilized to ascertain the primary control factors based on geotechnical data and nearly two months of seismic data from a longwall panel. Furthermore, the distribution law and correlation relationship among seismic source parameters are systematically analyzed. Results show that the effect of coal depth, coal seam thickness, coal dip, and mining speed covers the entire mining process, while the fault is only prominent in localized areas. There are varying degrees of log-positive correlations between seismic energy and other source parameters, and this positive correlation is more pronounced for hazardous high-energy seismic events. Utilizing the linear logarithmic relationship between seismic energy and other source parameters, along with the impact weights of dynamic risks, the comprehensive energy index for evaluating high-energy seismic events is proposed. The comprehensive energy index identification method proves to be more accurate by comparing with the high-energy seismic events based on energy criteria. The limitations and improvements of this method are also synthesized to obtaining a wide range of applications.","PeriodicalId":502388,"journal":{"name":"Applied Sciences","volume":"87 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141647406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
