Thirty-two male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups: Control, AOM, AOM + UDS, and UDS. The AOM and AOM + UDS groups were induced by AOM (15 mg/kg body weight) subcutaneously once a week for 10 weeks. AOM + UDS and UDS groups additionally received fed with pellets included 30 ml/kg UDS extract. At the end of the trial, blood and colon tissue samples were taken from the rats following necropsy. The gross and histopathological findings revealed that the administration of UDS extract significantly decreased lesions including aberrant cript foci, adenoma, and adenocarcinoma formation both numerically and dimensionally. Immunohistochemically, slight CEA and COX-2, strong Caspase-3 immune-expressions were detected in the group AOM + UDS compared to AOM group. Biochemical examinations indicated that a markedly increase in the malondialdehyde and fluctuated antioxidant defense system constituents levels such as reduced glutathione, glutathione <i>s</i>-transferase, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase were restored in AOM + UDS group. These results reveal that the UDS may act as a chemopreventive dietary agent, inducing apoptosis, resulting in a significant reduction of colon carcinogenesis.</p>","PeriodicalId":501691,"journal":{"name":"Nutrition and Cancer","volume":" ","pages":"306-319"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01635581.2021.1881568","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"25347743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is very important to choose an effective tool to identify these patients promptly. However, few studies have discussed this issue. The primary objective of this study is to clarify the similarities and differences between the two nutritional screening and assessment tools, and to estimate the anthropometry and biochemical indicators of the patients with cancer pain, with a view to provide help for treatment of these patients.</p><p><strong>Method: </strong>Data of 146 patients with cancer pain were collected from August 2018 to May 2019 in the Pain Therapy Department of Tianjin Cancer Hospital. The information of numerical rating scale (NRS), nutritional risk screening-2002 (NRS-2002), patient-generated subjective global assessment (PG-SGA), anthropometry and biochemical indicators were collected for pain assessment, nutritional risk screening, and nutritional status assessment.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>NRS scores had a positive correlation with NRS-2002 (<i>R</i> = 0.273, <i>P</i> = 0.001) and PG-SGA (<i>R</i> = 0.341, <i>P</i> = 0.000) separately. NRS-2002 and PG-SGA had a significant positive correlation with each other (<i>R</i> = 0.468, <i>P</i> = 0.000). NRS-2002 was finished in a shorter time period (4.2 ± 0.8 min vs. 12.8 ± 0.8 min, <i>P</i> = 0.001), while PG-SGA had a higher detection rate of malnutrition (86.3% vs. 65.8%). In the stepwise multiple regression analysis, NRS (0.258, <i>P</i> = 0.001), PA (-0.297, <i>P</i> = 0.000), TP (0.178, <i>P</i> = 0.030) are the indicators of NRS-2002; and NRS (0.317, <i>P</i> = 0.000), PA (<i>β</i> = 0.288, <i>P</i> = 0.000) and BMI (-0.281, <i>P</i> = 0.000) are the related variables of PG-SGA. The kappa coefficient was lower than 0.4 (kappa value = 0.396) when choosing the score of NRS-2002 ≥ 3 and PG-SGA ≥ 9 as the diagnostic criteria. If choosing the score of NRS-2002 ≥ 2 and PG-SGA ≥ 9, both the correlation coefficient (<i>R</i> = 0.699, <i>P</i> = 0.000) and the kappa coefficient (kappa value = 0.698, <i>P</i> = 0.000) became more coefficient.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Both NRS-2002 and PG-SGA could identify patients with nutritional risk and malnutrition accurately. NRS-2002 is simpler and takes less time to finish, while PG-SGA is more cumbersome with a higher detection rate of malnutrition. NRS, PA, TP and BMI are the most important reference indicators predicting on nutritional risk index and malnutrition status. There is a lack of consensus regarding the effects of omega-3 PUFAs on C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of systemic inflammation, in cancer patients. Herein, a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was conducted to evaluate the effects of omega-3 PUFAs on CRP levels in patients with cancer. PubMed and EMBASE were searched until May 2020 to identify randomized controlled trials that examined the effects of omega-3 PUFA administration on CRP levels in cancer patients. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to determine the differences in omega-3 PUFA administration and control conditions. Seventeen eligible studies involving 916 cancer patients were included in this meta-analysis. Significant heterogeneity was present among individual studies (Pheterogeneity = 0.000; I 2 = 74.5%). The overall SMDs of CRP levels between omega-3 PUFA administration and control conditions were 0.628 (95% CI: 0.342-0.914) and 0.456 (95% CI: 0.322-0.590) by the random-effect and fixed-effect models, respectively. Sources of heterogeneity were not found through subgroup and meta-regression analyses. Existing publication bias contributed slightly to the effect size. Omega-3 PUFAs can reduce systemic inflammation, as indicated by CRP levels in cancer patients. The use of omega-3 PUFAs is recommended for cancer patients due to their anti-inflammatory properties.","PeriodicalId":501691,"journal":{"name":"Nutrition and Cancer","volume":" ","pages":"840-851"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01635581.2021.1931365","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"39036622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We conducted a case-control study to investigate the association between patterns of nutrient intake and the risk of GC in Iran. We enrolled 178 GC patients and 271 controls matched for age and sex. We collected dietary intakes using a validated diet history questionnaire. We performed factor analysis on 28 nutrients using multivariate logistic regression models on tertiles of factor scores and estimated odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). We identified three nutrient patterns. The first pattern included pantothenic acid, riboflavin, zinc, animal protein, and calcium. Selenium, thiamin, carbohydrate, vegetable protein, niacin and low intake of vitamin E loaded the second pattern, and the third pattern was abundant in fiber, carotene, vitamin C and A. We found no significant association between GC and any of the dietary patterns. However, in the first patterns, men in the highest tertile had significantly higher odds of GC than the lowest (OR = 2.15, 95% CI: 1.13-4.09, p trend = 0.02). A dietary pattern loaded by animal products may increase the risk of GC among Iranian men. This meta-analysis was conducted on six randomized controlled trials (2–7) and the pooled results indicated that lycopene supplementation had no significant effect on PSA level (WMD: −0.60, 95% CI: −2.01, 0.81 mg/L). However, subgroup analysis conducted on three studies (2–4) revealed a significant reduction effect of lycopene on PSA level in patients with higher levels of baseline PSA. Unfortunately, we found several problems in this systematic review that seriously affect the validity and interpretation of the study findings. First, it is important to note that two of the six included studies were conducted on the same overlapping population (2, 3) and authors did not consider this issue in their study. Most concerning, is the inclusion of these two studies in subgroup one analysis that was confined to studies conducted on patients with higher baseline levels of PSA (≥6.5 μg/L). Since these two studies account for the major weight of the included studies in subgroup 1 (18.23% vs. 19.13% for subtotal weight), the results of the subgroup may not be correct and need more evaluation. Therefore, it is worth noting that when multiple reports from the same underlying RCT are available, inclusion of the RCT only once in the meta-analysis is crucial, to avoid duplication of findings (8) Second the included studies were subgrouped based on mean value of serum PSA of participants at the beginning of the study, but not based on the inclusion criteria. This may lead to misclassification of subgroups. Since, there may have been a combination of patients with serum levels of PSA higher or lower than 6.5 μg/L, the mean value of serum PSA is not a correct estimation of the whole population. Third, to assess pairwise comparisons, data on three different doses of lycopene supplementation from the original RCT were included (6) and comparisons were done vs. one placebo group (three different dose of lycopene supplementation vs. one placebo group). In this case, the placebo group may have been considered 3 times in the overall analysis. Therefore, overestimation of the effect size may have led to misleading results, according to the Cochrane handbook (9). Fourth, in the inclusion criteria section, authors mentioned that they included studies that used other treatment in both intervention and control groups. However, in the exclusion criteria, it was reported that those studies that administered lycopene in combination with other bioactive components were excluded. This led to a controversy in the study methodology, as we realized that the study by Bunker et al (5) in which the comparison groups were “lycopene + multivitamin” and “multivitamin” were included in this meta-analysis and the study by Lane et al. (10) which had a factorial d","PeriodicalId":501691,"journal":{"name":"Nutrition and Cancer","volume":" ","pages":"806-807"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40313565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus and Cochrane library were searched for relevant studies from inception to October 29, 2020 by using (Tea OR \"Green Tea\" OR \"Black Tea\") AND (\"Esophageal Neoplasms\" OR \"Esophageal Cancer\" OR \"Esophagus Cancer\") as key words. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to evaluate the quality of the literatures. The meta-analysis was performed using the Revman 5.3 and Stata 13.0 software. The subgroup analyses were conducted on publication year, population regions, tea type, tea temperature, and type of esophageal cancer, and the publication bias was calculated using the funnel plot and Begg's regression. A total of 12 case-control studies with 5253 cases and 8273 controls were included. The meta-analysis displayed that hot tea drinking was significantly associated with the risk of esophageal cancer (pooled odds ratio, 2.04; 95% CI, 1.78-2.31). However, the research evidence is still limited, therefore, it needs further discussion.</p>","PeriodicalId":501691,"journal":{"name":"Nutrition and Cancer","volume":" ","pages":"2384-2391"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"39908406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies in-vitro show that one of the effects of tocopherol is the reduction of cancer stem cell activity which is connected to poor clinical course. In the scientific literature, reports on the participation of vitamin E not only in protection against the mutagenic effects of reactive oxygen species, but also in its anti-angiogenic activity and the ability to inhibit the invasion and metastasis of neoplastic cells are increasingly common. In this context, the role of vitamin E in preventing the neoplastic process and selected malignant neoplasms among women seems to be of particular interest. In this article, we present the results of research on the potential anticancer effects of vitamin E in the fight against breast, cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancer.</p>","PeriodicalId":501691,"journal":{"name":"Nutrition and Cancer","volume":" ","pages":"1163-1170"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01635581.2021.1952626","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"39197835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
