The state of the art as well as the perspectives are presented. The main part provides a detailed analysis of the historical materials collected in Ukraine’s Central State Historical Archives in Lviv with enormous resources titled the National School Board. The achievements of the Polish sustem of education, specifically the development of vocational schools in Krakow, are presented in details based on these resources. During the Stalinist period, the Polish Workers’ Party (later the Polish United Workers’ Party) tried to instil in teachers “socialist morality” by means of various courses, conferences, additional education and the order of “self-education”. As previous studies indicate, the assumptions of both concepts are consistent with the educational policy in that time but an analysis of the specific titles in this regard has been rarely carried out.The article consists of a theoretical part with a definition of the concepts necessary to understand the topic, and outlines the historical context. It is followed by a research part presenting the methodology of the research and a description of selected texts. This series was created in the Ukraine in 1860. Aleksander Groza was, first of all, a writer and poet, a representative of the so-called “Ukrainian school” in Polish literature, a nobleman and a representative of the middle-class gentry. The aim of the article is to characterize the alphabet books both in terms of structure and content. From the theses of the English scholar John Locke, who encouraged changes to the approach to young people and educating their spirit (mind) so that they would become righteous and just citizens, to the ideas introduced by the Geneva-based philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau, suggesting that a child is a being completely different from an adult, so the concept of education should also be completely different. In Poland, there were some reflections of the aforementioned changes in education and upbringing, as evidenced by Prince Henryk Lubomirski, who at a very young age was placed under the care of his relative, Princess Izabela Lubomirska, née Czartoryska. The authors present his educational and professional path, with special emphasis placed on academic activity and the related achievements. {"title":"Dążenia kobiet do dostępu do edukacji akademickiej na ziemiach polskich na przełomie XIX i XX wieku","authors":"Natalia Pawlicka","doi":"10.14746/bhw.2022.46.9","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14746/bhw.2022.46.9","url":null,"abstract":"The purpose of the article is to present women’s aspirations for access to academic education in Poland at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.Educational inequalities accompanied women at all levels of education. However, the biggest problems were encountered by women in pursuit of tertiary education. It was this path of development that was inaccessible to them for the longest time in Poland. The difficult economic situation of Poles during the Partitions over time forced the society to slowly change the thinking and approach to the academic and professional activity of women. Due to the lack of opportunities to study in the partitioned area, the only possibility for Polish women to study at a higher level was academic emigration. The most common destinations were Switzerland, France, and, in the last decade of the 19th century, also Belgium. The beginnings of the practical struggle for access to tertiary education by women date back to 1892–1910. At this time, emancipation associations were involved in petitioning university authorities to grant women permission to study.This article is an attempt to trace the educational possibilities of women in Poland, with special emphasis placed on women’s aspirations to access academic education at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
