Lingering questions hinged on whether maize is presently grown on land that supports its optimal growth and if farmers’ knowledge of their farmland suitability informs their decision to cultivate improved maize varieties. However, attaining the level of food self-subsistence largely requires optimum land use and the adoption of innovative advancement to double farmers' yields. Unfortunately, land suitability profiling and farmers’ cultivation of Improved Maize Varieties (IMV) still require more attention in the scheme of initiatives to revitalize agriculture. Previous research addressed other crops rather than maize staples and assessed areas exclusive of the current study area. This paper used Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Multicriteria Analysis (MCA) to map out land areas suitable for maize cultivation and further used frequency, counts, and parametric estimator to data from 466 maize farmers to profile farmers who cultivated IMV, examine the effect of cultivating IMV and its determinants. Results showed the suitability of AHP for land evaluation, revealing the highly, moderately, marginally, and least suitable areas of land for maize cultivation occupying 5.09%, 56.53%, 37.47%, and 0.89% of the total land. The result also divulges the dominance of old respondents where the age of farmers who did not cultivate IMV ranged between 50 and 61 years while the age of respondents who cultivated IMV ranged between 52 and 72 years. A small-scale production pattern was observed as the area of land under cultivation varied between 1.9 and 2.67 acres for respondents who grew IMV and those who did not. The Potential Outcome mean (POmean) estimation for respondents who did not grow IMV was 8127.70kg and 11695.8 kg for respondents who cultivated IMV, and the size of land cultivated and access to extension services significantly (at P>|z|=0.000) contributed to the likelihood of farmers growing IMV. The study highlights the importance of harnessing the comparative advantage of land by cultivating the crop it best supports suggesting the need to embrace IMV cultivation and practices including but not limited to the cultivation of legumes to help maintain the soil integrity and further advocate for improved communication between farmers and agricultural services developers.","PeriodicalId":492946,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural Extension, Economics and Sociology","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135350592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The state, which is relatively backward in agricultural development paradigm, has a glorious past regarding women’s ‘movement’ for the state’s cause. Now, it is to be understood properly their role and participation in farm economy for revamping the agrarian situation in the state by exploring the farm women’s role.
 Methods: The study was conducted by collecting both secondary as well as primary information from sample respondents equally distributed over two valley districts (namely, Thoubal and Imphal East) of Manipur. In all the phases of selection (of sub-division, block, village etc.) the method of probability proportional sampling was employed. Standard econometric methods and statistical packages were applied to elucidate the core objective(s) of the study.
 Results: The status of participation of farm women in decision making process has been judged with the help of Participatory Index (P.I) and Decision Making Index (DMI). Farm women, in general, participates prominently in socio-cultural matters (DMI = 0.86-0.93) and miscellaneous matters (DMI = 0.83-0.96), moderately in family’s financial/economic matters (DMI = 0.62-0.89) but rather poorly (DMI = 0.43-0.56) in farming matters. More specifically, they are relatively less consulted or are given less importance on matters like consultation with officials (private or government), purchase of household furniture, purchase of improved implements/machineries, selection of crop variety, input management in crop cultivation etc.","PeriodicalId":492946,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural Extension, Economics and Sociology","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134976032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study explores the print visibility of agricultural news in three newspapers in India. Therefore, research was accomplished through a random selection of three national- newspapers, Hindi(one) and English (two), namely Dainik Jagran, The Hindu, and The Hindustan Times. The agricultural news in the three newspapers was collected from December 2020 to November 2021 and categorized into political news, advisories, policy, techno-innovation, entrepreneurship, and environmental. The articles were extracted from E- Papers and print PDFs for practical purposes based on keyword selection. The findings revealed that the agricultural news covered by the newspapers was feeble and under 5 % of the total news content. The total number of agricultural articles found from December 2020 to November 2021 was 6191. However, Dainik Jagran led in print visibility with a yearly average of 4.71 per cent, followed by The Hindustan Times at 4.30 percent and The Hindu at 3.23 percent. The print visibility ranged from 8.0 percent to a maximum, and the minimum was 1.8 percent. It was also found that Agri-political news had maximum visibility in two of the three newspapers (68.3 percent in the Hindu and 33 percent in Dainik Jagran).","PeriodicalId":492946,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural Extension, Economics and Sociology","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134976254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The bulk of India's tiny and marginal farming communities were transformed socio-economically by the use of soybeans, which also made a considerable contribution to the country's oil economy. Production technology for this miracle crop is also continuously upgrading with time. Thus, the present investigation was conducted in five villages of Kannod block of Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh to look after the factors affecting adoption of improved soybean production technology. Six blocks make up the Dewas district: Bagli, Dewas, Kannod, Khategaon, Sonkatch, and Tonkhurd. Out of them, Kannod block was specifically chosen since, over the past 10 years, the area under soybean crop has increased while productivity has steadily decreased in this block. With the help of a structured interview schedule, data was collected purposely from 105 farmers. For calculating relationships between dependent and independent variables correlation coefficient was used. Results of the study revealed that out of thirteen variables, eleven variables were significantly and positively related with factors affecting adoption of Improved Soybean Production Technology. Two variables i.e. age and farming experience were found significantly and negatively related with factors affecting adoption of Improved Soybean Production Technology. Majority of soybean farmers 63.81% reflected medium level of adoption regarding improved production technology. In constraint analysis, lack of on-time availability of improved varieties of seed followed by higher cost of inputs (seed, insecticide, fertilizer and implements) were two major constraints faced by 70.48% and 59.05% soybean farmers respectively. These findings provide insights for future research on factors affecting adoption of improved production technology by soybean farmers.","PeriodicalId":492946,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural Extension, Economics and Sociology","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134977173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system had been set up for maximum output with little regard for the environment or the individual's existence. To overcome this, the best alternative is eco-friendly natural farming, which is economical and has been embraced by several Indian states. The objective of this research is to study the resource use efficiency, factors affecting adoption, and problems faced by farmers under the natural farming system in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. Out of 12 districts, the Mandi district has been selected purposively due to a large number of farmers switching to the conventional farming system. A simple random sampling technique was used to select the farmers in the study area where a sample of 60 farmers was selected to analyse the Cobb-Douglas production function, Logit, Chi-square, and Garett ranking techniques were used. The study highlighted that out of the total cultivated area, the maximum area was under natural farming i.e., 64.83 per cent as compared to 35.17 per cent under a conventional farming system. The factor affecting the adoption of natural farming were chemical input cost, decreased pest attacks, health benefits, and quality yields with significant values of 0.006, 3.82, 4.16, and 3.94, respectively. It shows the rate of change in the adoption of natural farming systems with a 1 per cent change in the value of these factors. Besides this, there were some major constraints reported by farmers which hindered its widespread among farmers in the state.","PeriodicalId":492946,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural Extension, Economics and Sociology","volume":"216 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135738680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Availability and access to certified seed multipliers increase the chances of smallholder potato farmers’ (SHF) uptake and use of certified seed technologies and practices. Most farmers cannot access certified seeds from these multipliers, forcing them to use and reuse the seeds saved from their local storage facilities. The paper sought to determine whether access to certified seed multipliers influenced potato smallholder farmers’ use of CSPs in Kipipiri Sub-County, Kenya. A closed-ended, researcher-administered survey was used in collecting data from 106 SHFs selected from the area. Descriptives and binary logistic statistics were used to answer the study objectives. The findings indicated a significant relationship between access to certified seed multipliers and the use of CSPs. From the study, only 40 % of smallholder farmers had access to certified seed multipliers, while the majority (60%) did not. This trend would be why the respondents opted to use other sources of seeds from farmer stores. Additionally, the high cost of certified seeds and lack of awareness of existing certified seed sources/multipliers were recorded as the significant barriers hindering farmers from accessing certified seed potatoes in the study area.","PeriodicalId":492946,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural Extension, Economics and Sociology","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135697788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, despite efforts, 22% of farmers live in poverty, and industry's contribution to GDP is low. This raises questions concerning beef cattle farmers' profit efficiency (PE). This study, thus, sought to gain empirical evidence on the level of profit efficiency (PE) and its determinants among farmers to discover ways to optimize the industry's commercialization to reduce poverty. This study uses field survey data from 393 farmers in the Meatu District of the Simiyu Region. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier profit function (CDSFPF), and Heckman treatment effect (HTE) models. The descriptive results showed that farmers had low levels of education, limited access to credit and veterinary services, and limited involvement in farmer cooperatives. Such limitations tend to lower profit maximization. Profit efficiency (PE) results showed that farmers lose 51% of their profits, with an average PE of 49%. Based on the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) of CDSFPF, the cost of medications, supplements, labor, parasite eradication, marketing, transportation, and local breed beef cattle had a significant negative impact on PE at a 5% (P < 0.05) level. While grazing land owned and cattle herd size positively influenced PE at a 5% (P < 0.05) significant level. Thus, controlling variable costs to the utmost will increase PE and provide a substantial benefit. Besides, the estimated CDSFPF, along with the inefficiency variables and robustness test, show that access to market information, credit, educational level, farming experience, off-farm income, and cattle fattening all have a negative influence on profit inefficiency at the 5% (P < 0.05) significant level, thereby enhancing PE. Whilst the distance to the market increased the level of profit inefficiency, thereby decreasing PE. Therefore, the government should address factors that influence cattle production efficiency to boost farmers' income, the economy, and food security and reduce poverty.","PeriodicalId":492946,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural Extension, Economics and Sociology","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135833208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, prior to make any decision regarding the quality of extension services from these organizations, it is crucial to understand the perspective of farmers regarding the privatization of agricultural extension services. Therefore, the study intended to analyze farmers attitude towards agricultural extension services provided by private organizations. The study employed the use of 120 respondents selected from four villages kibingo, kitahana. Biturana and Bitare. The study used a total of 10 statement which were obtained from literatures, informal meeting with farmers and agricultural extension officer. Six statements were positive and four statements were negative. Prior data analysis all negative statements were converted to positive statements. Thereafter, data were analyzed by using Statistical package for social science version 20 in which descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage and mean were computed. The study found that 75% had unfavorable attitude, 11.7% had favorable attitude, 12.5% were neutral and 0.8% had most unfavorable attitude toward agricultural extension services provided by private organizations. Also, ordinal regression was used to determine factors associated with farmers attitude among all factors only group membership was to found to be positive and statistically significant with P<0.000 and odds ratio of 0.002. The study concludes that majority of farmers are not in favor with extension services from private organizations. This is due to lack of awareness among farmer concerning these private organizations that provide extension services. Therefore, the study recommends that, important strategies such as spreading awareness to farmers about private organizations, fostering public-private partnership and encouraging farmers to join agricultural associations would help to make farmers to be in-favor with extension services from private providers.","PeriodicalId":492946,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural Extension, Economics and Sociology","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135830196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
