In this regard, constitutional principles of equality serve as the cornerstone for promoting non-discrimination in employment across the public and private sectors. The concept of equality embedded in the constitution today, on the other hand, is anchored in a complicated historical context that has greatly shaped the nation’s path. Hence, guaranteeing the effective application of the principle while taking into account the individual rights and needs of every community remains a difficult challenge. This is because affirmative action policy is also embedded in the constitution that aims at protecting the Bumiputera. Hence, understanding the historical context behind the establishment of the constitution is of utmost importance as it allows Malaysians to appreciate its unique features that seek to strike a delicate balance between the rights and needs of the people. This study which is doctrinal in nature, attempts to examine Malaysia's constitutional equality principles, with a special emphasis on understanding how to strike a balance between individual's rights and needs in the context of employment. This study tries to uncover the issues and challenges that impede the equitable implementation of the equality principle in the employment sector by evaluating historical events, existing legal frameworks, policies, and practices.","PeriodicalId":492362,"journal":{"name":"e-Bangi Journal of social science and humanities","volume":"138 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135776393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Factors related to SES such as parenting behavior and chaotic living environment is linked to decreased emotion regulation (ER) in children. This review explores the role of SES in the development of ER in children. Two online databases were searched and returned 261 articles. After the process of screening and eligibility according to PRISMA guidelines, 10 articles were included in this review. Results from this systematic review suggest that there is a significant relationship between SES and ER and a correlational, predictive and longitudinal relationship between SES and ER in children was found. Three main themes were found associated with SES and ER in children which were family income, parental and environmental factor. SES is an essential factor associated with the development of ER in children. Findings from the study supports the importance of targeted social-emotional intervention for lower SES children.","PeriodicalId":492362,"journal":{"name":"e-Bangi Journal of social science and humanities","volume":"138 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135776682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Haryanto and Mahendra (2021) posited that code-switching is frequently found on Instagram and usually used by bilingual communities to write captions for photos or videos, and in their comments. However, the research on analysing code-switching on Instagram in Malaysian context is still understudied. Thus, this study aimed to examine the types of Malay-English code-switching expression on Hitz FM Instagram comment, and the reasons for code-switching in social networking websites by employing the framework by Poplack (1980) and Malik (1994) respectively. A thematic analysis was used to classify a one-year data consisting of f 323 Instagram comments into types and reasons for code-switching. The findings revealed the most occured type was intra-sentential (75.85%) followed by tag-switching (17.03%) and inter-sentential (7.12%). Whereas, out of the 10 reasons by Malik (1994), only 8 were found with the most reason was due to lack of competence (41.18%). Therefore, the findings suggest that social media users in a multilingual society frequently code-switch for various reasons when communicating on Instagram. It is hoped that the findings from this study will contribute more insights into the field of linguistics, and benefit future research.","PeriodicalId":492362,"journal":{"name":"e-Bangi Journal of social science and humanities","volume":"139 S258","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135776873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This transition has been linked to increased levels of academic stress and mental health issues among university students. This study aimed to (i) assess the coverage of articles addressing the challenges faced by students in higher education institutions during lockdown and (ii) identify the coping mechanisms employed by these students. Employing a scoping review methodology, researchers selectively reviewed articles published from 2019 to 2023. Databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Sabinet Africa Journals served as sources for data collection, which was subsequently analysed thematically. Findings indicate that psychology students faced multiple challenges during online learning, including elevated stress and anxiety levels, data limitations, and poor network connectivity. To cope with these challenges, students relied on support from family and friends, self-motivation, and effective time management. Consequently, the study highlights the need for pedagogical adaptations, recommending that educators modify their teaching approaches to better engage students in discussions and mitigate the noted challenges.","PeriodicalId":492362,"journal":{"name":"e-Bangi Journal of social science and humanities","volume":"139 S257","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135776874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the media has different interpretations of this invasion. Ukrainian and Western media use the term “war,” whereas the Russian media call it a “special military operation”. Storylines or frames provided by mass media greatly influence public perception of the situation. Once a frame has become extensive in media discourse, it raises the public’s expectation of the political legitimation actions by discussing the possible consequences of the crisis. From that perspective, this study examines the framing of the Russia-Ukraine war and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s image in one renowned America-based media, The New York Times Online. A qualitative content analysis of commentary articles under the “Opinion” column was performed. Two hundred twenty-nine commentary articles were content analysed from 24 February 2022 to 24 December 2022. The qualitative content analysis enables the study to scrutinise the framed content of the war and the constructive and destructive character of Putin’s image portrayal. Agenda setting and framing theory were used as the theoretical framework. The analysis inductively generates thematic frames by systemising the content of the articles. The findings reveal that Russia was framed as an unprovoked invader who has unmercifully onslaught Ukraine while Ukraine strives to put up an inspiring defence of its sovereignty. The image of Vladimir Putin carries a destructive character where the portrayal is conspiratorial and seclusive.","PeriodicalId":492362,"journal":{"name":"e-Bangi Journal of social science and humanities","volume":"139 S255","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135776876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pharmaceutical waste disposal legislation and regulations are available to some extent but limited to industrial premises and health-care institutions. Information on the disposal of pharmaceutical waste in public hands, known as domestic pharmaceutical waste (DPW), is limited. This scoping review aims to comprehend the global practice of DPW disposal by following the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews guideline. Three online databases were searched for eligible articles: peer-reviewed in English language, describing the methods that the public disposed of unwanted or expired pharmaceuticals at home (DPW Disposal) and the public’s participation in their local DPW programs (DPW Program). Search terms were derived from Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and free text when applicable. One expert report and thirty research publications were analysed. The articles originated from Asia (n=13), the Middle East (n=6), Africa (n=4), Europe (n=3), the United States (n=3) and Australia (n=1). Most pharmaceuticals are disposed of as household garbage (58.8%), returned to health facilities (17.9%) and flushed down the toilet drain (8.1%). There is a large range of diversity in public awareness (range: 14% - 82%) and participation in DPW Programs (range: 8.3% to 64%) with higher percentages reported from European countries. Existing regulations and policies have modest to moderate impact on proper DPW disposal. Our findings provide new information that may be utilised by policymakers in the process of laying the groundwork for a national plan outlining the most effective methods for disposing of DPW.","PeriodicalId":492362,"journal":{"name":"e-Bangi Journal of social science and humanities","volume":"139 S252","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135776879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ALC was designed by incorporating the community of inquiry (CoI) framework, which highlights cognitive, social, and teaching presence. The participants of this study consisted of 24 ESL learners and four ESL educators, and they were selected using a purposive sampling method. Focus groups and one-to-one semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather data. The responses were analysed using thematic analysis. The results showed that opinion-based discussions play an essential role in enhancing learners’ skills, particularly their higher-order thinking skills. The study also identified some challenges ESL learners encountered in the ALC, such as improper time management skills, lack of participation, and a sense of isolation. Therefore, some effective strategies were proposed to overcome these challenges. The study recommends that the ALC approach that integrates the CoI framework should be embedded in the ESL curriculum to develop learners’ skills and foster a sense of community in the virtual learning environment. This approach can lead to better outcomes for learners in terms of skill acquisition and their ability to succeed in academic and professional settings.","PeriodicalId":492362,"journal":{"name":"e-Bangi Journal of social science and humanities","volume":"139 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135776881","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Srivijaya Kingdom and British colonial rule historically influenced this Malay culture's silver craft, encapsulating beliefs, dreams, and resilience. Originating in Kelantan, Malaysia, the Malay silver craft industry flourished, but recent studies reveal its decline and potential extinction. This paper's primary objective is to comprehensively identify and propose strategies for integrating sustainable practices of silver craft, aligning with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on sustainable industrialization and cultural heritage preservation. The research seeks to preserve and revitalize the craft industry for community benefit, emphasizing its socio-economic impact, potential for job creation, income generation, tourism, and intangible heritage preservation. The paper conducts a literature review, visual research, and focus group discussions employing anthropology, art history, and community development. This research emphasizes the importance of sustaining cultural heritage, fostering community resilience, and empowerment. Influenced by their cultural beliefs, environment, looking at nature, and the natural world, the fine silver craft undergoes artistic expression, subsequently fostering social cohesion and interaction. Following the quadruple helix concept, the Malay silver craft industry revival engaged through collaboration among local artisans, government agencies, community organizations, and academicians. By utilizing thematic analysis based on focus group discussion, this research thoroughly analyses the sustainability of the Malay silver craft domain, interpreting key thematic codes that underpin its ecological and socio-cultural significance within the framework of local craft in Malaysia.","PeriodicalId":492362,"journal":{"name":"e-Bangi Journal of social science and humanities","volume":"137 S240","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135776395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the implementation of the law is only limited to 6 years of compulsory education at the primary level as opposed to at the international level, which reaches a period of 8 to 12 years of compulsory schooling. Therefore, this study was conducted to explore the challenges faced by parents if Malaysia intends to implement compulsory education in Malaysia within a period of 12 years, starting from one year in preschool until the end of schooling at the secondary level. This study was conducted using a qualitative approach involving several participants selected through purposive sampling. The exploration results through open-ended questions, focus group discussions, and researcher notes were analysed using a thematic analysis, which then received expert consensus at an excellent level with a Cohen Kappa index value exceeding 0.81. The study discovered four themes of challenges faced by parents in implementing the 12-year compulsory education policy in Malaysia, namely parents' financial issues, school-related issues that are a challenge for parents, parents' difficulty in managing their children, and issues faced by children, all of which have resulted in challenges to parents. In this vein, these challenges should be emphasized because parents are the main implementers of the compulsory education policy, which also determines the success of the intended 12-year compulsory education policy.","PeriodicalId":492362,"journal":{"name":"e-Bangi Journal of social science and humanities","volume":"138 S241","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135776680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
