We analysed the number of patients treated with AA, patient characteristics, and the proportion of patients with complicated appendicitis, and we compared the 2 groups of patients treated 12 months before and 12 months after COVID-19 onset in Greece.Results: A total of 152 patients were included in this study. There was a significant decrease in the number of patients presenting with AA after COVID-19 onset in Greece. Respectively, 91 and 61 patients were subjected to appendectomy 12 months before and after COVID-19 onset. Comparing the 2 groups of patients, there was a statistically significant increase in the operation time (p = 0.01) after COVID-19 onset, whereas the percentage of complicated appendicitis, the duration of symptoms before presenting to the ED (< 24 h, > 24 h), and the type of operation (laparoscopic, open, converted) did not differ significantly between the 2 groups of patients.Conclusions: The number of patients presenting to the ED with AA decreased after COVID-19 onset, most likely because patients hesitated to seek help in a COVID-19 referral hospital.","PeriodicalId":49106,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Natural History","volume":"47 1","pages":"194-197"},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11200070/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70475304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hollier","doi":"10.3366/anh.2023.0868","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3366/anh.2023.0868","url":null,"abstract":"René-Edouard Claparède was a ground-breaking Swiss naturalist specializing primarily in invertebrate embryology and the study of Protista and Annelida. While a student in Berlin he was encouraged by Christian Ehrenberg to use the latest microscopes and became renowned as a skilful observer and illustrator of the smallest organisms then known and of tiny anatomical details. A popular lecturer in zoology and comparative anatomy in his home town of Geneva, he nonetheless encountered difficulties in that city, still considered the “Protestant Rome”, due to his strong support for Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. His involvement in the first French translation of On the origin of species ( Darwin 1862 ) proved problematic too, although his remark, “It is better to be an improved ape than a degenerate Adam,” became a catchphrase in discussions of this contentious debate.
