Here, we studied the presence of physical dormancy in mericarps (seed-dispersal units) and seeds, the morpho-anatomical structures responsible for physical dormancy, and the effects of possible methods for breaking dormancy in seeds of Malvastrum coromandelianum (Malvaceae). M&M: Imbibition essays were used to confirm the presence of physical dormancy in mericarps and seeds, and the morpho-anatomical seed structure was described by using a scanning electron microscopy. The effects of mechanical, chemical and thermal scarifications on seed germination and seed structure were also evaluated. \u0000Results: Mericarps and scarified seeds increased > 160% of their initial weight, whereas intact seeds increased < 40% of their initial weight. The presence of a palisade cell layer in seed coat and a water-gaps complex in the chalazal region were observed. Higher germination percentages and lower t 50 were registered after mechanical scarification, followed by chemical and thermal scarifications (dry heat). Chemical and thermal scarifications caused the chalazal cap elimination and the contiguous cracks to form around the chalazal region; whereas the formation of a chalazal blister and its elimination were only observed after chemical scarification. \u0000Conclusions: Seeds of M. coromandelianum have physical dormancy. Water enters the seeds through a water-gap complex (Type III compound) located in the chalazal region. Mechanical, chemical and thermal scarifications are effective methods for breaking physical dormancy and increase germination.

These data are also compared with the few historical data available, as well as with the medical ethnobotany of Argentinian Gran Chaco criollos people and surrounding areas. \u0000M&M: Between 2008 and 2018, a total of 11 (eleven) campaigns were carried out to the Moqoit settlements in Chaco province, where semi-structured interviews were carried out with key collaborators. With these key people, herbarium samples were collected from the plants they have indicated. \u0000Results: A total of 381 medicinal applications are registered about 155 botanical taxa. Most of them (28%) are prescribed against digestive disorders and in a lesser extent, against dermatological conditions (15%), as antipyretics (14%) and for the reproductive system (13%). Frequently plants are used against “empacho” (digestive disorder), affections of magical-religious etiology (therapeutic rituals), as refreshing, antitussive and against toothache. Historically, the identification of taxa has been difficult. Three species were reported as naturalized in Argentina, however, no genus revision has been carried out in the country until now. In order to make new contributions to the Argentinean Flora, given the complexity of the genus and the lack of an integral work in this regard, the objective of this contribution is to present a synopsis of the Pyracantha species naturalized in Argentina. \u0000M&M: Specimens of each species from different national and international herbaria were studied, and were contrasted with the type specimens. The original descriptions and specific bibliography of each taxon was reviewed. \u0000Results: A summary of the five naturalized species is presented. Distribution maps in Argentina are presented in addition to descriptions, a key, diagrams of the main leaf morphological characters and a series of images that allow the identification of the species. Lectotypes for four names are designated. \u0000Conclusions: Five species are naturalized in Argentina. P. fortuneana and P. koidzumii constitute new records for the flora of the country. Up to this moment, P. fortuneana represents the species with the most austral distribution and, together with P. angustifolia, are the most distributed species in Argentina. P. koidzumii is restricted mainly to the center-east of Argentina. P. atalantioides and P. coccinea are the less represented species.

In this study, knowledge associated with forage plants in the Sierra de Ancasti, Argentina (Dry Chaco) was inquired. Accordingly, we determined what types of livestock is raised in the area, what plants are consumed by domestic animals and, in local terms, what is considered a forage. \u0000M&M: By using the snowball technique, 20 households, related to livestock areas, participated in the open and semi-structured interviews. Study participants were specifically asked about forage species. Field work was complemented with participant observation and guided walks with peasant shepherd families related. Results: Local production is mainly related to goats, sheep and cattle. Regarding forage plants, 154 species were found (corresponding to 129 genera, 51 families). The high percentage of species of native origin is significant (78%). According to the Frequency Index, the most widely cited kinds of forage are: Cereus forbesii, Medicago sativa, Vachellia aroma, V. caven y Zea mays. \u0000Conclusions: The variety of species consumed by the different types of livestock, the prevalence of native fodder species and the diversity of habits and parts used highlights the region's rich biological diversity. Likewise, the forage term was defined by Ancasti’s inhabitants as associated with the concept of “raise” the animal (feeding, fattening, caring or increasing production).

This behavior represents a serious problem for weed management. The purpose of this study was to characterize the bud bank of both species and to assess their response to glyphosate application. \u0000M&M: We analyzed 120 reproductive shoots of C. erecta, and 80 reproductive shoots of E. retusa, at 30- and 60-days post- herbicide application. The doses applied to C. erecta were 0 (control), 1.200 and 2.400 g a.i. ha -1 , and to E. retusa were 0 (control), 480 and 1200 g a.i. ha -1 . \u0000Results: We found that both species presented active buds in approximately 50% of their nodes, even after herbicide application. Bud bank dynamics changed in both weeds after herbicide application, and therefore their growth pattern. The activation of originally inhibited buds allowed weeds to regrow and survive after glyphosate application altering their architecture. \u0000Conclusions: The bud bank plays an important role in glyphosate tolerance in both weeds. The resprouting capacity in both species was similar for any dose of glyphosate applied. Therefore, an alternative control strategy based on the increase of the dose of herbicide would not be a successful alternative for the management of these weeds. The interruption of the storage of reserves in the rhizome system and the reduction of the number of buds would be key to effective long-term management of these and other perennial weeds in no tillage cropping system.

There are between 191 and 215 Opuntia species. The ex situ conservation of this phytogenetic resource has gained relevance, but the species identification using the seeds is a limitation when there is a lack of reliable morphological traits. The purpose of this research work was to characterize the seed morphology of seven Opuntia species and identify their own morphological traits, in order to establish the species’ identification criteria when seeds are the only source of preserved plant material. \u0000M&M: We used the attrition and image analysis technique to measure: seed coat thickness (GT), ventral funicular coat thickness (GCFV), embryo’s length, embryo’s surface area, major axis length and minor axis length. The most outstanding traits were detected through exploratory ANDEVA and main components methods. The species classification and forecasting were based on a supervised multivariate analysis. Results: Differences in all the variables among species were significant. Opuntia ficus-indica had the largest seeds. GCFV and GT were the most helpful variables in terms of discrimination. The main component analysis explained 92% of the total variation. K- Nearest Neighbor method was able to forecast correctly 83% of the species classification cases. \u0000 Conclusions: The assessed seed traits, mainly GCFV and GT, can help in the morphological description of prickly pear species and in the Opuntia species identification, when there are only seeds.

This contribution aimed to integrate the information collected in eight years of study (1998 and 2005) and analyze the distribution of taxa along gradients of height (2600-4700 m asl) and salinity (0.2-104 g L -1 ). \u0000M&M: We analyzed the diatoms found in our previous surveys of 57 wetlands located in the provinces of Catamarca and Jujuy between 2340 and 4683 m asl. \u0000Results: We identified 73 genera of diatoms with 375 infrageneric taxa and many of them recorded for the first time in the country (29) or in the region of our study (331).
