The theory used in this research is stylistics by Geoffrey Leech, which focuses on figurative language and also uses the theory of racial discrimination. This study uses a qualitative method and uses a content analysis approach because it uses poetry as data. The result shows from the 14 types of figurative languages, only 8 types were found in the poems; Allusion, Hyperbole, Parallelism, Irony, Personification, Simile, Symbolism, and Euphemism, with a total number of 17 data. Those data broadly have meanings related to the life struggles of back people. After that, the researcher found three kinds of racial discrimination in eight figurative languages namely; direct, indirect, and social life racial discrimination. From the three poems, it seems the poet uses figurative language in each of her poems to illustrate the rights and difficulties she faced and the poems are depictions of racial discrimination that causes struggles in the life of black people.","PeriodicalId":485979,"journal":{"name":"Vivid: journal of language and literature","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135270271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article tries to show how this issue is presented in two novels. Scrutinized from Foucauldian's perspective focusing on power relations between parents and children, this article analyzes Desni Intan Suri's Aku Tidak Membeli Cintamu and Mohja Kafh's The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf. The results show that the parents impose their power in the form of domination. In addition, the authors portray the children's acceptance as well as resistance to domination. Acceptance indicates obedience. On the other hand, resistance is a way to exemplify that parents' dominations can be challenged as children's voices are also valuable.","PeriodicalId":485979,"journal":{"name":"Vivid: journal of language and literature","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135270585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of idiomatic expressions can be presented in the dialogue and expressed in a literary work, such as in a song. It led the researcher to study further 1) the types of idiomatic expressions and 2) the meanings presented in the idiomatic expressions of 6 songs in \"Positions\" album by Ariana Grande. The researcher used qualitative research techniques combined with observation methods.Meanwhile, to analyze the data, the researcher used McCarthy & O'Dell's(2010) theory to specify the type of expression and Leech's (1981) theory to describe the meaning presented in the idiomatic expressions. The result discovered 18 data that belong to idiom expressions, with details: fixed statements (14), trinomials (3), and prepositional phrases (1). Each idiom expression has its specific meaning, which aims to enable the audience to understand the true meaning. According to Leech (1981), all the meaning presented in the idiom expressions belongs to thematic meaning.","PeriodicalId":485979,"journal":{"name":"Vivid: journal of language and literature","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135270270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As preliminary research, it primarily aimed to document the performance and collect its scarcely written sources. Data and sources were collected through observation, interview, and documentation methods. Descriptions of the performance or narrative, narrator or storyteller, text, and context are provided in this essay to introduce bakayat as a Minangkabau art and literature and to place it in a larger literary context.The data were collected by observing and recording bakayat in its actual performance setting, obtaining documents and archives, and interviewing its storytellers. The study found that bakayat is seriously endangered. Used to be one of the most attended performances in the area, bakayat is no longer appealing to young audiences. The sustainability and continuity of bakavat as a local tradition are at stake. Therefore, serious measures must be formulated and taken by the government, local adat dignitaries, and other cultural stakeholders to promote this unique tradition and encourage the young audience to learn and preserve bakayat.","PeriodicalId":485979,"journal":{"name":"Vivid: journal of language and literature","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135270581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gunderson. A borderline personality disorder is an intense emotional dysregulation that can affect someone's personality. The research uses a qualitative method, and the writers are the instrument themselves. In order to analyse Josh's character, the writers use the characterisation theory by Richard Gill. Besides that, the writers focus on character psychological problems with borderline personality disorder theory by John G. Gunderson, which has several concepts; signs and symptoms, causes and impacts, and its developed traits. The result of the research is that Josh's character has a distortion in his personality growth because of his childhood trauma which developed his personality and emotion in what he experienced and perceived. As an educated person, he is good at positively managing things, as his thoughts try to stay sane in living his life. However, his emotional-behavioural management is disturbed by how his experience and self-growth developed his perceptions. In addition, he has developed all nine signs and symptoms of BPD which is also added by several other traits associated with how he acted out as a high-functioning BPD type. Although he has grown up unconsciously developing it, the positive traits also remain to keep it together in himself. In sum, his behaviour is proven to be borderline personality disorder symptoms caused by the personality growth he passed since traumatic experiences in his childhood.","PeriodicalId":485979,"journal":{"name":"Vivid: journal of language and literature","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135270583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is an observation that the speakers also commit those errors which have no influence of the mother tongue but are a result of the target language which are called Intralingual errors. This paper particularly focuses on how the Maithili language (LI) acts as a hindrance for the Maithili ESL learners to acquire the target language, that is, the English language (L2). The survey also displays the traces of Intralingual errors in the responses of the speakers, who are committing grammatical errors in speaking the English language (L2). The analysis and evaluation of the results that have been procured through the digital questionnaire survey conducted has been displayed in this paper. The general survey shows that people admitted making grammatical errors while speaking both native and second language and it can be inferred from the specific survey that the same respondents have committed errors in more than half of the questions given to them. The objective of the paper is not only to show the various reasons which lead the Maithili ESL speakers to commit errors while speaking or writing the English language but also to profuse remedies to overcome these barriers. It can be concluded from the entire research that the hypothesis is justified and there is a scope for remedial measures to correct the situation.","PeriodicalId":485979,"journal":{"name":"Vivid: journal of language and literature","volume":"235 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135270272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The two authors wrote about Bali from their personal experience dring their stay in that island. Some images created in the works are seen and analyzed through the prespective of Postcolonialism and New Criticism. This article presents how the two authors depicts Bali as an extravagant place in Eastern country which has adopted some Western values. The negative image is delivered to oppose the idea of Bali as the perfect island; moreover, as part of Indonesia, Bali still has some weaknesses to strengthen and truly support that it is part of Indonesia. The writer admits that this article is far from perfect. Due to the limitation of thinking and time, some more aspects can be explored more profoundly in terms of the image of Bali in these two works. Hence, there are still a lot of literary works that also talk about and discuss the image of Bali. Hopefully, there will be anyone who, willingly or even the writer himself, could continue the research and find out more about the images of Bali from the Western perspective as seen in some other novels and works.","PeriodicalId":485979,"journal":{"name":"Vivid: journal of language and literature","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135270275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is expected to provide information about verbal and non-verbal signs and how they describe the content of that movie. This study used a Titanic Movie poster downloaded from Pinterest as the data source. The descriptive qualitative method was used by applying the Semiotic theory from Barthes (1997) to find out the verbal and non-verbal signs and to analyze the meaning of verbal and non-verbal signs on the Titanic Movie poster. Cerrato's (2012) theory of color meaning was used to support the analysis. In collecting data, there were several steps taken: select and download the movie poster for analysis on Pinterest, followed by reading and taking notes to recognize the posters. The findings indicate that there were 19 signs total, with I1 verbal signs and 8 nonverbal signs. The meanings of these signs were found in the words and pictures on Titanic Movie posters. In the verbal and non-verbal signs of the titanic movie poster, most of them conveys connotative meaning. In the non-verbal signs, almost all movie posters use photos of actors as models, it means the advertisement wants to attract public interest by using visuals of the actors playing the movie.","PeriodicalId":485979,"journal":{"name":"Vivid: journal of language and literature","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135270578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
