In the youth environment, such values as citizenship and patriotism are not sufficiently formed, but the priority of the personal over the public is firmly rooted. It is important to form their value orientations, since it is student youth that determines what our society will be like in the future. It is necessary to understand what values influence the worldview of modern students, their attitudes and life goals, in other words, to explore the social portrait of a student of a provincial university. The assessment of the student's social portrait was carried out using the developed questionnaire and the questionnaire of value orientations by S. Bubnova. As a result of the survey, problem areas and shortcomings in this direction were identified. For 70.6% of students, getting pleasure is an end in itself. 59% do not adhere to a healthy lifestyle. More than 26.9% of them have no desire to have children in the future. Respondents show an insufficiently high level of social activity to achieve positive changes in society. 85.7% of respondents rarely or almost never take part in charitable activities. Despite the fact that 84.9% agree with the statement that “a person must study all his life”, in practice the level of cognitive activity is quite low. More than 55% of respondents do not read scientific literature. 65.5% of students do not take part in the cultural life of the city. 43.7% believe that success in achieving any goal is half dependent on material support. The importance of the task of the patriotic education of the younger generation in the activities of all institutions of socialization is underlined. The notion ‘patriotism’ is considered on the basis of the definitions found in the scientific literature. Taking into account the results of the sociological poll of the student youth studying at the higher educational institutions of the Republic of Buryatia, conducted by the author in 2023, the characteristic of the group on the levels of valuable consciousness and behavior is given. It is pointed out that the majority of young people realize high significance of patriotism value, the necessity of its education from the childhood, consider themselves to be patriots, express indifference to the society problems, but there are several shortcomings in patriotic group culture revealing, first of all, the detached position of some young people from the society on the level of behavioral attitudes. Much work in the students’ patriotic education is specified to be done by the higher educational institutions today. All over the world, there is an intensive search for new models of the 21st century education, engineering education in particular, that could meet the needs of the present and future generations, aimed at preserving the natural environment and resources necessary for sustaining human life. The article outlines the optimal contours for a new concept of sustainable development, which will be introduced into education in the near future. The modern content of the project training for future engineers is considered, the absence of interdisciplinary engineering project training in educational programs of various levels is noted: the case of Volgograd State Technical University (VSTU). According to the author, at the present time there are big changes in the educational programs of engineering training, and the return of engineering project training to academic interdisciplinary is in demand. Many researchers agree that the introduction of ChatGPT in the educational sphere contributes to the implementation of personalized learning, increasing the efficiency of teachers and creating favorable conditions for the learning and development of students. Despite some advantages of using ChatGPT in training, it should not be considered as a reliable tool for gaining knowledge. It is shown that digital inequality in the Russian Federation is gradually being overcome, which further exacerbates the problem of threats to the use of ChatGPT in education. The most acute threats of using ChatGPT in education are analyzed: the problem of establishing the authorship of student work, the formation of distorted ideas about the world, the loss of critical and creative thinking by students, moral degradation. It is not known what stages of development negative professional identity goes through and under the influence of what factors it develops. The influence of the first active experience of performing a professional role in the course of pedagogical practice was tested on the principle of ‘before-after’ on a panel from a real group of students with dual pedagogical specialization. Practice created quasi-experimental conditions. Before and after, students filled out a questionnaire determining the relationship of the desire to get a job at school with a number of socialization features, with the student’s idea of his compliance with the role of a teacher, with an assessment of the attractiveness of individual teaching functions, the material and social status of teachers in the aspect of the student’s personal claims. The measure of the impact of practice was defined as the delta of changes in numerical variables and as the presence of changes in nominal variables. About a third of the students had previously formed an internal positive motivation for the teaching profession. The share of school-oriented students is slightly less than a third (28%). It is unchanged before and after practice.
