First, wind tunnel tests were conducted to identify the essential factors necessary for calculating wind loads and the variables influencing these factors. Square building shapes were considered, and the wind force coefficients and power spectral density were measured by combining four ground roughness values, eleven side ratios (D/B), four aspect ratios (H/BD), and wind directions ranging from 0° to 90°. The wind power coefficient and the spectral coefficient were formulated so that the wind load could be calculated according to various conditions. The WCP computations were based on the calculation of the load combination coefficient using the resonant wind load. Finally, the wind loads obtained from the wind tunnel tests were compared with those predicted by the WCP using an actual project model (inner-core (A) and outer-core (B) types). Building A yielded similar WCP and wind tunnel experimental responses when subjected to wind and laminar wind loads. Additionally, Building B yielded a larger error than that of Building A, but similar results were obtained when buildings were subjected to combination and laminar wind loads.","PeriodicalId":48546,"journal":{"name":"Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141806608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study evaluates the implications of using hydrogen-enriched natural gas (H2NG) blends in condensing boilers and Gas Adsorption Heat Pumps (GAHPs) in a residential building in Rome, Italy. The analysis considers several parameters, including non-renewable primary energy consumption, CO2 emissions, Levelized Cost of Heat (LCOH), and Carbon Abatement Cost (CAC). The results show that a 30% hydrogen blend achieves a primary energy consumption reduction of 12.05% and 11.19% in boilers and GAHPs, respectively. The presence of hydrogen in the mixture exerts a more pronounced influence on the reduction in fossil primary energy and CO2 emissions in condensing boilers, as it enhances combustion efficiency. The GAHP system turns out to be more cost-effective due to its higher efficiency. At current hydrogen costs, the LCOH of both technologies increases as the volume fraction of hydrogen increases. The forthcoming cost reduction in hydrogen will reduce the LCOH and the decarbonization cost for both technologies. At low hydrogen prices, the CAC for boilers is lower than for GAHPs; therefore, replacing boilers with other gas technologies rather than electric heat pumps increases the risk of creating stranded assets. In conclusion, blending hydrogen into the gas grid can be a useful policy to reduce emissions from the overall natural gas consumption during the process of end-use electrification, while stimulating the development of a hydrogen economy.","PeriodicalId":48546,"journal":{"name":"Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141806711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work presents a numerical investigation on the influence of diffuser vane height on flow variation and hydraulic loss in the volute for a water supply centrifugal pump. Experiments and numerical simulations were conducted with four different vane height ratios. The numerical results were validated against experimental data. The hydraulic losses of different flow components were numerically evaluated at varying guide vane blade heights. The changes in flow patterns within the volute and the resulting discrepancies in hydraulic losses due to variations in the inlet flow conditions at different blade heights were studied. The findings indicate that the total pressure drop within the volute is affected significantly. Compared to traditional guide vanes, the reduced height vanes can reduce the hydraulic loss in the volute by nearly 75%. Once the vane height is reduced, the high-pressure gradient is improved, and the small-scale vortex vanishes. The influence area of the large-scale vortex in the volute outlet pipe decreases, leading to a weakening of the deflection of the main flow and ultimately resulting in reduced hydraulic loss.","PeriodicalId":48546,"journal":{"name":"Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141807962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this method, piles usually need to pass through weak soil layers, and the pile end falls on a bearing layer with good bearing capacity. Under existing technical conditions, the thicker the weak soil layer, the longer the pile body, and the more difficult it is to ensure the construction quality of the pile. In response to this issue, some scholars have adopted the rigid pile composite foundation method with a thick cushion layer for reinforcement treatment. This article uses PLAXIS 3D (V20.04.00.790) software to establish a finite element model of rigid pile composite foundation with a thick cushion layer and simulate the process of foundation reinforcement. The influence of parameters such as thickness, compression modulus, and shear strength index of the cushion layer on foundation settlement and pile–soil stress distribution is studied, and the reasonable range of these parameters is analyzed under the condition of considering reinforcement effect. Through comparative analysis, it can be concluded that for deep and weak soil areas, the thickness of the cushion layer can range from 0.5 to 2.6. The thickness and compressive modulus of the cushion layer have a significant impact on the settlement of the foundation, the pile–soil stress ratio, and the stress of the pile body, while the shear strength index of the cushion layer has a relatively small impact on these parameters. Reasonably selecting the geometric and mechanical parameters of the cushion layer can effectively reduce stress concentration at the pile top and better play the role of the soil between piles.","PeriodicalId":48546,"journal":{"name":"Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141809904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The application proportion of the general contracting mode in infrastructure projects is not high, the number of successful projects is not large, and the implementation effect is not ideal. One of the main reasons is that the design optimization theory and practice of international standard general contracting projects cannot adapt to the general contracting projects in the Chinese context, making local general contracting projects face huge challenges such as low enthusiasm for design optimization from all parties and unsatisfactory design optimization effects. Therefore, under the premise of bounded rationality, when the owner adopts control methods of different intensities, an evolutionary game study on the selection of design optimization strategies between the design and construction parties is carried out, and stability control strategies are proposed through case experiments and simulations. The research results indicate the following: firstly, the design optimization of general contracting projects in the Chinese context is feasible, but it depends on the distribution ratio of benefits obtained from the design optimization. Compared with general civil construction general contracting projects, the design optimization allocation ratio of industrial construction general contracting projects is more significant; secondly, the mixed control method of strong control and weak control is the optimal choice for the owner of the general contracting project; and thirdly, there are multiple evolutionary stable points, and mechanism design or incentive measures should be used to guide owners to choose weak control strategies, while design and construction parties should choose their design optimization strategies. The research results provide a reference for owners to determine the proportion and scheme of design optimization allocation, and for construction parties to determine design optimization strategies.","PeriodicalId":48546,"journal":{"name":"Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141807694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Crushed coconut shell (CS) was used as a coarse aggregate (CA), and M-sand replaced river sand (R-sand) at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The study focused on the workability characteristics, mechanical behavior, and microstructural analysis of SCCSC. Experiments were performed on fresh and mechanical characteristics, including slump flow diameter, T500 slump flow time, L-Box blocking ratio, V-funnel and a wet sieving stability test. Mechanical characteristics include compressive, split tensile, flexural, impact resistance and bond strength. Utilizing M-sand develops the mechanical performance of SCCSC. The morphological characteristics, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and the X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, were studied in this research work. The findings show that the addition of M-sand increases the concrete strength. The microstructural analysis demonstrates that adding different amounts of M-sand to SCCSC reduced the porosity and anhydrous cement percentage, although it increased calcium hydroxide and hydration products. The substitution of 100% M-sand at 28 days increased compressive strength by 3.79% relative to the reference SCCSC. Based on the findings, the mechanical strength of SCCSC containing M-sand significantly improved compared to the concrete with river sand.","PeriodicalId":48546,"journal":{"name":"Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141806554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The unbalanced development of transportation infrastructure in the current period of rapid urbanization has become one of the principal elements triggering spatial differences in rurality and changes in rural territorial characteristics. However, there are few studies on the impact of transportation infrastructure accessibility on the multidimensional characteristics of rurality from the perspective of heterogeneity. This paper analyzed the spatio-temporal characteristics of transport accessibility (TA) and the county rurality index (CRI) in Guangdong in 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2020 using an accessibility model and the rurality index and explored the clustering characteristics and interactions of TA and the CRI through exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) and geographic weighted regression (GWR) modeling. The findings showed that (1) TA and the CRI in Guangdong were significantly unbalanced in terms of space. The CRI showed a weakening trend in general, forming a distribution pattern of “high in the north and low in the south, high in the west and low in the east”, while TA was on the rise, maintaining a stable pattern of “high in the middle and low in the periphery”. (2) Both TA and the CRI in Guangdong had a Moran’s I value greater than 0.6 during the study period, exhibiting strong spatial agglomeration, while the two showed a significant spatial negative correlation. (3) The influence of TA on the CRI in different dimensions showed dynamic changes in stages, with TA having a higher intensity of effect on society rurality and land rurality in 2005, while on society rurality and industry rurality in 2020. (4) This paper grouped 77 counties in Guangdong into four types of policy zonings—coordination types, lagged types of accessibility, lagged types of rurality and double lagged types—and put forward corresponding development recommendations. The study conducted in this paper contributes to an in-depth understanding of the impact of transportation infrastructure development on the multidimensional characteristics of rurality and provides a basis for policy formulation for coordinated urban–rural development and sustainable rural development.","PeriodicalId":48546,"journal":{"name":"Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141807371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, stakeholders often focus on improving health while discounting well-being. Establishing a better workplace environment can improve workplace well-being. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the factors influencing workplace well-being in infrastructure construction projects. To achieve this aim, the study objectives are to (1) identify the critical factors influencing workplace well-being in infrastructure construction projects; (2) develop an interrelationship model between underlying constructs of the factors; and (3) assess the influence of the underlying constructs on workplace well-being in infrastructure construction projects. First, a list of factors influencing workplace well-being was established using data from a systematic literature review and semi-structured interviews. Then, a survey was developed using the list of factors and distributed to infrastructure construction practitioners. In total, 124 responses were retrieved and analyzed using normalized mean analysis, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The analyses reveal that the critical factors include workload, salary package, the timeline of salary payment, working hours, planning of the project, insurance for construction workers, workers’ welfare and project progress. Furthermore, the underlying constructs are physical factors and psychosocial factors. Finally, both physical and psychosocial factors are found to significantly influence workplace well-being in infrastructure construction projects. Focusing solely on physical factors may not sufficiently enhance workplace well-being in construction projects, as there are also non-visible factors, such as psychosocial factors. Thus, exploring the interplay between visible and non-visible factors and their influence on workplace well-being in construction projects is crucial. Nevertheless, the findings have several limitations, including using data from a single country and non-hands-on construction practitioners, as well as the underlying constructs being derived solely using statistical methods. Still, the study is original in its focus on modeling the relationship between the factors influencing workplace well-being within the context of infrastructure construction projects. In other words, this study differs from prior research by specifically modeling the factors that influence well-being in infrastructure construction projects.","PeriodicalId":48546,"journal":{"name":"Buildings","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.1,"publicationDate":"2024-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141806814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This analysis was carried out with the Iranian construction industry’s current situation in mind. The respondents and the Delphi panel were chosen from among Iranian managers and project management professionals with a focus on building projects. These professionals had more than 20 years of experience working on international projects, and in addition to their expertise in project management, they also understood the principles of earned value analysis and value engineering. Thus, the components extracted from the literature review were used as the basis for designing a structured interview based on 39 important effective components previously determined as identified factors. The questionnaires were distributed among the experts, and the returned questionnaires were analysed using the SWARA technique to rank the weight and importance of the factors. Using the SWARA method, the opinions of the expert panel members consisting of 20 engineers and a semi-structured questionnaire was used to gather expertise in project management and managers, with a focus on Iranian CPM. As shown by the results, stakeholder management, time value of money, and worth, allocated the first to the third rank to themselves with respective weights of 0.104, 0.103, and 0.087.
