Fermentation is carried out mostly by LAB which are much resistant to salt. Pickles usually contain a variety of LAB which not only improve digestion of fruits and vegetables but also contribute to unique taste by providing components like exopolysaccharides and bacteriocins. The production of bacteriocins by LAB is useful for human body and are beneficial to reduce growth of foodborne pathogens like S. aureus and E. coli etc. LAB have been used in fermented food industry because they improve the taste of product. From different samples of pickles eighteen Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) have been isolated in the current work. The isolates were screened on De Mann Rogosa Sharpe agar (MRS). After preliminary morphological and biochemical examination, twelve out of eighteen strains were identified as Lactobacillus species, while four were Streptococcus species. Antibacterial activity of eight bacteriocin-producing Lactic acid bacterial (LAB) strains were tested against three pathogenic bacteria Escherichia coli (E.coli), Bacillus cereus (B.cerus) and Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus) by using disk diffusion method. Maximum antibacterial activity was observed against B. cereus and least against E. coli. Bradford method was used in order to estimate the protein bacteriocin. The protein content was measured by comparing it with the bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a standard. LAB are beneficial bacteria for human health as these can be used as natural antibacterial tools against common pathogenic bacterial strains involved in different types of deleterious infections","PeriodicalId":485309,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan journal of biotechnology","volume":"21 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141920494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It belongs to the Solanaceae family and is commonly planted for its tasty fruits. Pests, weeds, diseases, and parasites are just a few of the numerous variables that significantly affect tomato growth and yield. The most common disease affecting tomatoes is fusarium wilt. Fifteen rhizobacterial strains were identified by morphological and biochemical analyses in this work, and they were employed as an antagonist against Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici. Fifteen isolates were investigated for their antagonistic properties against Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici using an invitro dual culture approach. The growth of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici was suppressed by each isolate. Out of the 15 rhizobacteria isolates, isolate RBS-5 exhibited the highest level of growth inhibition and strongly suppressed the development of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici, resulting in a 57.28 percent reduction in pathogen growth as compared to the control. The development of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici was suppressed by isolates RBS-12, RBS-6, and RBS-15, in decreasing order of merit, compared to the control by 53.7, 51.91, and 51.73 percent. Employing a line × tester mating design in upland cotton (Gossypium hirutum L.), twenty-one cross combinations were obtained from seven females and three males. F1 and F2 generations, along with their parents, were sown in a randomized complete block design with three replications during 2012-13 and 2013-14. Studied traits included lint yield (g) per plant, G.O.T (%), staple length (mm), fiber fineness (mic.value), and fiber strength (g/tex). Throughout the growing period, recommended cultural practices were followed. Analysis of variance revealed high significance for genotypes, parents, crosses, and their interactions (P×C) for all traits. In the F1 generation, lint yield and staple length under line × tester (L×T) were highly significant. For the F2 generation, genotypes, parents, crosses, and P×C were highly significant for all traits except G.O.T%, where lines, testers, and L×T were highly significant for all traits except G.O.T%. Cross VH-292 × VH-291 excelled in lint yield per plant, while CRIS-342 × IR-3701 demonstrated superior fiber fineness and strength. VH-292 × VH-291 also displayed higher lint yield per plant, while CRIS-342 × FH-113 exhibited longer staple length with increased fiber fineness. Significant mean squares for genotypes (parents, crosses, and parents × crosses) indicate the data's utility for assessing parental performance, hybrid evaluation, heterotic effects, and inbreeding depression.","PeriodicalId":485309,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan journal of biotechnology","volume":"15 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140442565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our objective is to assess how various levels of organic fertilizer influence the development and productivity of this crop. The experiment involved five integrated applications of farmyard manure (T1 = 00 tons of farmyard manure + P (0), T2 = 1 ton of farmyard manure, P (30 P kg ha-1), T3 = 3 tons of farmyard manure + (60 P kg ha-1), T4 = 4 tons of farmyard manure + 90 P kg ha-1, and T5 = 5 tons of farmyard manure + (120 P kg ha-1). The results revealed that T5 = 5 tons of farmyard manure and (120 P kg ha-1).  resulted best and produced the maximum plant population (m2) (10.5), plant height (273.7 cm), stem girth (10.9 cm), head diameter (53.8 cm), number of seeds head-1 (2696.9), seed weight head-1 (60.7 g), seed index (32.7 g), and seed yield (2698.7 kg ha-1). Whereas the T1=00-ton Farm Yard Manure treatment produced the least results and recorded plant population (m-2) (6.6), plant height (217.7 cm), stem girth (9.3), head diameter (30.3 cm), number of seeds head-1 (1510.7), seed weight head-1 (26.6 g), seed index (23.0 g), and seed yield (2100.0 kg ha-1). It is therefore recommended that, for obtaining higher growth and seed yields of sunflower, farmyard manure should be applied at 5 tons per hectare, and (120 P kg ha-1) respectively. The results concluded that the growth and yield of sunflowers were significantly affected by the application of farmyard manure as compared to the control (no farmyard manure). The grain yield increased linearly with increasing farmyard manure levels. However, the plot fertilized with 5 tons of farmyard manure produced the maximum grain yield of sunflower.","PeriodicalId":485309,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan journal of biotechnology","volume":"11 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140442322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These challenges include issues with soil fertility, pest and disease pressure and shortages of high-quality seed potatoes. The scarcity of high-quality seeds is a massive hassle in Pakistan. Farmers in Pakistan, often reuse their seeds or obtain them from informal sources. This practice leads to increased seed quality deterioration and tuber-borne diseases, resulting in decreased yields. To address this situation, aeroponic techniques can effectively meet this challenge. Aeroponics is a novel technique for producing high-quality seed potato, aiming to address the challenge of seed production. Aeroponic techniques are commercially practised in many countries. Thus, in this review, we have highlighted the importance of aeroponic technology and how this technique can help uplift/boost up the seed potato production system in Pakistan. The overview concludes that aeroponic seed production offers numerous benefits, including improved yields, and resistance, even as keeping natural resources. Despite the challenges, the evaluation indicates that the implementation of aeroponic seed production technology in Pakistan may offers a promising and sustainable technique for seed potato production in Pakistan.","PeriodicalId":485309,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan journal of biotechnology","volume":"179 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140446040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two years field experiments were conducted during (2019 and 2020) at Tandojam to examined the effect of sowing methods (Raised bed, Ridge, Drilling and Broadcasting); planting densities (Recommended, high density and ultra-high density) and nutrient management (90+60+60+0, 90+60+60+10 and 90+60+ 60+20 kg ha-1 NPK+FeSO4). The experimental design was randomized complete block design with three replicates. The best result in all parameters on  average factors including drilling method, high density planting (66,666 plants ha-1), NPK+FeSO4: 90+60+60+20 kg ha-1 and their interaction resulted in economically superior overall sunflower performance in relation to its growth, seed yield and quality attributes. The drilling method was highly effective to improve seed yield apart from the lower biological yield due to greater harvest index as compared to rest of the sowing methods. Although, recommended plant spacing (55,555 plants ha-1) produced better individual plant based results, but due to lesser plant population, the overall seed yield was greater under high density planting (66,666 plants ha-1).Ultra high density plantation (83,333 plants ha-1) did not prove beneficial due to crowded plant population where harvest index became poor but biological yield increased. Higher FeSO4 improved the grain quality and no effect on foliage; hence 20 kg FeSO4 remained economically most beneficial to achieve desired seed production.","PeriodicalId":485309,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan journal of biotechnology","volume":"30 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140449904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, it is necessary to ensure the availability of nitrogen according to the requirement of the crop through the foliar application of urea; because it is proven more efficient when compared with soil-applied method, especially in wheat crop. Therefore, the study was designed to examine the effect of urea in foliar application under different concentrations on various growth stages of wheat under field conditions during 2020-2021. The wheat variety Benazir-2013 was selected because it is high-yielding, rust-resistant, and can be cultivated in all ecological zones of Sindh. Due to these prominent characteristics, nowadays, it is a better choice for growers. For the foliar application of urea, the concentrations were formulated as T1: Control, T2: Recommended dose of fertilizer RDF + 1% Urea on tillering stage, T3: RDF + 1% Urea at stem elongation, T4: RDF +1.5% Urea at tillering stage, T5: RDF + 1.5% Urea at stem elongation, T6: RDF + 2% Urea at tillering stage and T7: RDF + 2% Urea at stem elongation. Results of the study showed that maximum Plant height (94.7 cm), number of tillers (460.3 m-2), Spike length (16.7 cm),  number of grains spike-1 (65.8), Seed index (65.8 g), Biological yield (11.6 t ha-1) and Grain yield (5.0 t ha-1) was perceived by (T6: RDF + 2% Urea at tillering stage) followed by (T7: RDF + 2% Urea at stem elongation) with Plant height (90.4 cm), number of tillers (430.0 m-2), Spike length (14.8 cm), Grains spike-1 (58.3), Seed index (53.5 g), Biological yield (11.1 t ha-1) and Grain yield (4.8 kg ha-1). Meanwhile, the lowest values were recorded for all yield traits under T1: Control. However, T2, T3, T4, and T5 were also recorded significantly compared to the (T1) control. Hence, it is suggested that RDF + 2% urea at the tillering stage should be applied in wheat variety Benazir-2013 to achieve the maximum yield.","PeriodicalId":485309,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan journal of biotechnology","volume":"101 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140449898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
