The Fodder Research Center, Sargodha, used conventional breeding techniques to generate the general cultivar \"Barkat\" of oat (Avena sativa L.). It will be launched in 2021. The \"FRI-01\" commercial cultivar is a highly uniform off spring of the crosses between parental accessions (No. 970 and No. 288) and subsequent selections in multiple segregating populations (F2 through F6) using pedigree procedures. The cultivar outperformed the commercial check \"Sargodha-Oat 2011\" by 10% and 12.76% in forage yield during 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 station trials, respectively, and by 13.32% in fodder yield during 2016-17 at the zonal level. It is a late-maturing green cultivar that produces light brown seed and has a tall, multi-tillering plant form. It gave 7.13% higher fodder yield during 2017-18 and 22.38% increase over check variety during 2018-19 in national trials. Forage qualities include high palatability (85%), protein content (10.6%), and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. The flowers bloom roughly ten days after the reference variety. Barkat (FRI-01) sown on 1st October and 15th October gave highest fodder yield in comparison with other tested sowing dates while maximum green fodder yield 87 ton ha-1 at 80 kg per ha seed rate and 30 cm row spacing. Barkat (FRI-01) will be extremely valuable cultivars in both irrigated and desert region of Punjab Province due to its high yield, great palatability, higher protein contents than standard check, and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress. Also, the cultivar can serve as a parental line in future efforts to enhance oat genetics.","PeriodicalId":485309,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan journal of biotechnology","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135004266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The microorganism in the rhizosphere especially fungi and bacteria can increase the plant production under stress conditions both by direct and indirect mechanisms. A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential of biogas slurry and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) at different levels of salinity to improve the growth and yield of pea (Pisum sativum ). In field experiment biogas slurry @ 600 kg ha-1 and 800 kg ha-1 and PGPR strain “bacillus subtilis” was applied along with 6 dS m-1 and 8 dS m-1 levels of salt stress in addition to recommended doses of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus fertilizer. The results revealed that the combined application of PGPR and biogas slurry under normal soil conditions increased shoot length by 30.27% while under saline conditions it increased up-to 65.27%. Soil salinity reduced root length up-to 79.155% at 8 dS m-1 as compared to control. Application of biogas slurry improved 5.93% root length under salt stress as compared to respective control, on the other hand the combined application of PGPR and biogas slurry increased root length by 33.128% under normal conditions and under salinity stress it increased by 73.53%.Soil salinity reduced chlorophyll content 36.54% of pea decrease under salt stress, the application of biogas slurry under the same condition improved 29.26% chlorophyll content of pea but the combined application of PGPR and biogas slurry enhanced the chlorophyll contents 4.68% as compared to solely application of biogas slurry. The results clearly indicated that the combined application of PGPR and biogas slurry is the best source to enhance the growth and yield of pea under normal as well as under salinity stress.

Some plants have a good portion of carbohydrates e.g., stevia is being used as an excellent alternative to synthetic compounds i.e., sugar. Therefore, it is important to chemically characterize these nutrients and study their various biological properties. This research aimed to extract essential oil from stevia plant by using Soxhlet apparatus and analysis of nutrients present in the oil were performed by high performance liquid chromatography system i.e., HPLC. Two extraction solvents i.e., hexane (60/40; v/v) and ethanol (70/30; v/v) were used to compare the concentration of bioactive compounds. The plant material was subjected to two drying methods i.e., air dry and oven dry. 10 major compounds were identified as a result of the chemical characterization, in which steviol bioside i.e., 317.01615 (m/z) and stevioside (803.2189 m/z) that is obtained from oven drying using ethanol as extraction solvent were slightly greater than steviol bioside i.e., 315.2183 (m/z) and stevioside i.e., 802.8531 (m/z) obtained from oven drying using hexane as extraction solvent. Likewise, plant material subjected to air dry with ethanol as extraction solvent resulted in greater yield of steviol bioside i.e., 317.0717 (m/z) and stevioside i.e., 803. 3179 (m/z) as compared to steviol bioside i.e., 315.1104 (m/z) and stevioside (802.3185 m/z) that is obtained by air dry using hexane as a solvent. While using fresh leaves the concentrations of compounds i.e., stevioside (799.2187 m/z), dulcoside A (787.3759 m/z) and steviol (639.4189 m/z) obtained by using ethanol were greater than concentration of compounds obtained by hexane. While Rebaudioside A (965.3213 m/z), Rebaudioside B (803.3717 m/z), Rebaudioside C (940.4276 m/z), Rebaudioside D (1066.4763 m/z), Rebaudioside E (964.4273 m/z) and Rebaudioside F (789.3857 m/z) obtained by using hexane as extraction solvent were greater as compared to concentration of compounds obtained by using ethanol. Based on these results, we can suggest that Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni can be a natural source of antioxidant, anti-inflammation and antimicrobial properties. It can also be considerd as a potential source of essential oil. These results suggest that the leaves of S. rebaudiana Bertoni can serve as therapeutic agents or in prevention of certain inflammatory diseases through their radical-scavenging capacities.","PeriodicalId":485309,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan journal of biotechnology","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135051312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
