The seeds of Ipil Ipil were primed in various solutions for 30 hours. The seeds were soaked in priming solutions viz. distilled water, luke warm water, NaCl solution @ 1% and 2%. The unprimed seeds were taken as control. The data was recorded for seed germination percentage, mean germination time (MGT), germination index (GI), seedling vigor index (SVI), fresh biomass of shoot, fresh biomass of roots, dry biomass of shoot, dry biomass of roots, quality index of the seedlings, sturdiness quotient and leakage of the electrolytes. The results revealed that all the observed parameters studied in the present study were significantly (P<0.05) influenced by various seed priming treatments. The results of seed priming depict that seed germination (90.00%), germination index (0.43), germination time (5.22 days) and seedling vigor index (1498.0) were observed better in response to the luke warm water. While the seeds primed with NaCl @ 1% had better results for fresh biomass of shoot (5.58 g), root (1.44 g), dry biomass of shoot (1.57 g) and root (0.29 g). Quality index of the seedlings and sturdiness quotient had better result from NaCl treatment. The quality of the seedlings was measured in terms of sturdiness quotient, quality index of the seedlings and leakage of the electrolytes. The sturdiness quotient (0.98), quality index of the seedling (24.85) was also better in response to the halo (NaCl) seed priming @ 1%. The only leakage of the electrolytes had no significant of seed priming. It is concluded from the present study that all seed germination related parameters are greatly affected by the lukewarm water treatment. However, parameters related with the seedling growth are affected by the NaCl treatment @ 1%.","PeriodicalId":485309,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan journal of biotechnology","volume":"219 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140451269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Every year, Banana harvesting generates a large amount of banana pseudostem waste, which is generally burnt or thrown away despite containing many nutrients after harvest. Utilizing the banana's pseudo-stem sap as liquid fertilizer for increasing onion productivity through sustainable agricultural practices, a greenhouse trial was conducted to determine the optimum banana pseudostem sap (BPS) to be applied by foliar spray. There were five treatments designed in CRD with four replicates. The reduced mineral fertilizer was given to test the impact of the pseuodstem sap on the seedlings. The results indicated that sap application showed a positive and significant effect on all parameters of onion seedlings. The onion plant height increased to 48.96 cm, the number of leaves was 14.50, and the shoot length of 8.67 cm was recorded best. The onion bulb diameter ranged from 3 to 6 cm bulb weight from 54 to 92.75 g comparing the control. The best rate found was 80% RDF, along with 20% BSP in all parameters. It can be concluded that application of 80% RDF + Foliar spray of 20% banana pseudostem sap was found to be the most viable option for getting higher growth and yield in onion. This will reduce 20% chemical fertilizer and about 25% increase in the yield. This will be an eco-friendly practice and sustainable ergonomically, economically and environmentally.","PeriodicalId":485309,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan journal of biotechnology","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135251724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these methods can introduce imprecise changes in plant DNA. Accelerating plant enhancement is crucial to meet global food demand, but current methods are time-consuming. Scientists are revolutionizing plant breeding by employing various techniques to develop crops with specific attributes, such as increased yield and pest resistance, aligning with environmental and societal needs. While these methods offer substantial advantages, they often face challenges and can be less precise than desired. Innovative methods, such as gene editing using CRISPR, offer enhanced precision. CRISPR technology enables precise modifications to a plant's DNA, allowing for targeted improvements without unintended consequences. While CRISPR shows great potential, ensuring its safe and accurate implementation is a priority. Scientists are exploring diverse methods, both viral and non-viral, to effectively deliver CRISPR components into plant cells, with non-viral approaches gaining traction due to their safety and versatility. Nanoparticles play a pivotal role in these advancements by serving as delivery vehicles for CRISPR tools. These particles safeguard and transport the necessary components to specific locations within plants, bolstering growth, yield, and disease resistance. Despite challenges, the synergy of nanotechnology and CRISPR holds promise for revolutionizing plant improvement while safeguarding the environment. This integrated approach offers the potential to enhance crop growth and quality while upholding ecological balance.","PeriodicalId":485309,"journal":{"name":"Pakistan journal of biotechnology","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136308910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was carried out to investigate the effect of soil and foliar applied iron (Fe) on wheat. The treatments included: T1=Control (without Fe), T2=Soil applied Fe 3 kg ha‑1, T3=Soil applied Fe 6 kg ha‑1, T4=Foliar applied Fe 0.2%, T5=Foliar applied Fe 0.4%, T6=Soil applied Fe 1.5 kg ha-1+foliar applied Fe 0.1%, T7=Soil applied Fe 1.5 kg ha-1+foliar applied Fe 0.2%, T8=Soil applied Fe 3 kg ha-1+foliar applied Fe 0.1% and T9=Soil applied Fe 3 kg ha-1+foliar applied Fe 0.2%. All the treatments as alone or in combination, affected growth, yield and quality of wheat significantly (P<0.05). The results showed that T9 and T3 were most promising for almost all studied traits. Under T9 and T3, variety “TD-1” produced plants of 59.44 and 59.09 cm, while “Sindhu” showed 92.9 and 75.98 cm height, respectively. Higher grain yield (4799.7 and 4760.5 kg ha-1), grain protein (17.22 and 17.13%) were also recorded in T9 and T3, respectively; while T1 remained the least.
