This challenge calls for an evolution in the lifecycle thinking that has always been integral to the hospital building design processes; or an approach that is termed ‘future proofing’. Yet the implementation of future proofing as an emerging design requirement is impeded by lack of holistic understanding of the concept, and clarity about its objectives. As such, this research aims to provide a conceptualisation of future proofing via a taxonomic hierarchy. We interviewed sixteen experienced hospital architects from leading consultant firms across Australia to explore their general perceptions, and implementation in practice, of future proofing. The semi-structured interviews were informed by and indeed tested a theoretical model of future proofing previously constructed via literature review and were analysed and validated via thematic analysis and member checking. Our findings align theoretical understanding with hospital architects’ practice-based perceptions and experiences of future proofing; elucidating future proofing as a dynamic meta-capability involving a multi-purpose hierarchy. Accordingly, a hierarchical integrated model of future proofing in practice was developed based on three axes (Survive, Evolve and Thrive), respectively defining three sets of spectrums with two extremes ranging from passivity to activity (Resilience-Mitigation, Maintainability-Improvement, and Changeability-Transition). While in previous research future proofing has been oversimplified and perceived largely in terms of adaptability, our findings support a more expansive definition of future proofing that includes various lifecycle design considerations.","PeriodicalId":48523,"journal":{"name":"Architectural Engineering and Design Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2023-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49162884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although numerous lean simulation games are already being used extensively both in industry and academia, there has been, as yet, no systematic investigation in this area. In this context, this paper reports a systematic literature review to analyse existing lean simulations and games. Relevant databases were identified, and a search strategy was devised to uncover relevant literature. Peer-reviewed papers were vetted according to a set of pre-determined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Following the screening process, 52 documents were identified from the databases. From the final set of papers, 96 games in total were identified. The papers were analysed for a variety of factors including distribution along a timeline, database homes, authorship and countries of origin using social network analysis, and depth of discussion of particular simulations. Findings showed that the popularity of lean simulation games in the construction sector has grown in recent decades. According to our systematic review of the literature, the International Group for Lean Construction (IGLC) serves as a significant contributor to the emergence and dissemination of new and existing lean games and simulations. The analysis also indicated that most contributions have originated in the United States. Our social network analysis also indicated that a few key authors collaborate extensively, while others in the periphery are beginning to publish and collaborate.","PeriodicalId":48523,"journal":{"name":"Architectural Engineering and Design Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2022-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48610302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite its promising potential, there are few studies proposing effective strategies for promoting blockchain, particularly in providing a strategic analysis of blockchain in China's construction management. This study aims to investigate the external and internal environments of blockchain application and determine the roadmaps and strategies for blockchain application in construction management in China. A strength, weaknesses, opportunity, and threat (SWOT) analysis is employed to draw a panorama of the blockchain development status. Six roadmaps and strategies for blockchain application are proposed. By using the Analytic Network Process (ANP), a quantitative analysis was conducted to determine the ranking of SWOT sub-factors and roadmaps and strategies. The results show that ‘traceability of information’, ‘high application threshold’, ‘national policy support’, and ‘low informatization level of the construction industry’ are the most important sub-factors in strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats respectively. The best roadmaps and strategies are ‘improving the informatization level of the construction industry’, followed by ‘promoting the technological innovation of blockchain’ and ‘providing standard’. This study facilitates an in-depth understanding of the blockchain application in China's construction management. It will not only help researchers to conduct targeted blockchain research for more efficient project management, but also help practitioners to develop effective strategies for adopting blockchain.","PeriodicalId":48523,"journal":{"name":"Architectural Engineering and Design Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2022-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43603836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Likely due to designers’ lack in understanding of client priorities, and clients’ misunderstanding of design processes and services, client valuations of architectural design services may differ from those of architects. As part of an effort to discover the differences in architectural design service valuations between these parties, this study uses descriptive and inferential analysis to explore how American architects rank established design services in order of importance, and how they believe their clients rank design services. The design services in this study were extracted from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Documents B101 and B132, standard project agreement forms for owners and architects that include Basic and Supplemental services. Participants were also asked to identify architectural services they believed should be added to the list of services currently included in the AIA documents, and what design services should be excluded. A total of 435 architects responded to the survey, with 85 licensed architects completing the survey. Results show that architects believe their prioritized design services differ slightly from their clients’ probable rankings. Most services mentioned by participants as being qualified to be added to the lists of AIA documents services were related to management and design, while participants tended to recommend services related to telecommunications and data design be excluded. More in-depth research may be needed.","PeriodicalId":48523,"journal":{"name":"Architectural Engineering and Design Management","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2022-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43580417","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To simultaneously minimize the construction cost and the environmental impact, a green design model for PC slabs in long-span structures is necessary. In this paper, a multi-objective green design model for prestressed concrete slabs (MGDPCS) was developed to minimize both CO2 emissions and the construction costs of PC slabs. MGDPCS provides the optimized PC slab thickness, diameter and yield strength of the rebar, size and yield strength of the tendon using the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) for the input PC slab size and load. Furthermore, the effects of changes in the long- and short-side of span and tendons of PC slabs on construction costs and environmental impact are analyzed using the proposed model. Accordingly, we developed two indicators, that is, the environmental and economic scores and the eco-friendly coefficient, to evaluate the performance of the practical green designs using MGDPCS. To verify the applicability of MGDPCS, the model was applied used to analyze the designs of PC slabs in an actual six-story industrial building with a slab span of 10 m × 10 m. The results showed that the optimal designs obtained from MGDPCS outperformed existing slab designs for buildings by 8.12% and 13.62% based on the reductions in CO2 emissions and costs, respectively.","PeriodicalId":48523,"journal":{"name":"Architectural Engineering and Design Management","volume":"19 1","pages":"531 - 549"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2022-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44531230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The government office buildings in Iran account for 15% of the non-residential building sector; hence, energy retrofitting of existing office buildings could effectively reduce total energy consumption and Carbon dioxide emissions. This study aims to evaluate the effect of various facade systems with cool materials on the thermal behavior and energy performance of a typical existing office building in a hot climate. The proposed hybrid retrofit method combines design and energy retrofit strategies while evaluating the effects of different workspace layouts and facade systems on external surface temperatures and total energy consumption. Applying such a method, the most optimal design and energy retrofit strategies were selected using a combination of optimization and scenario-based approaches. The results showed that using double-skin facades could reduce annual energy consumption and Carbon dioxide emissions by 63%. Moreover, the results indicated the most efficient types of cool coatings materials for reducing cooling loads.","PeriodicalId":48523,"journal":{"name":"Architectural Engineering and Design Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2022-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43796716","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considering regions and countries, such as China, those are scarce in structural wood resource but rich in bamboo forest, an idea of introducing bamboo into CLT system has been proposed to form a novel composite material, named as cross-laminated bamboo and timber (CLBT). This paper focuses on the comparison of thermal insulation performance of CLBT and CLT panels. The thermal resistance and transmittance of CLT and CLBT wall specimens were measured by the Guarded Hot Box test. A calculation method provided by ISO standard and a finite element (FE) model were also used to evaluate the thermal resistance of CLT and CLBT panels. Based on the proposed FE model, some parametric analysis was performed through 11 CLBT panels with different compositions, including the layer number of glubam and timber, the thickness of extruded polystyrene and the use of gypsum board and screws. Moreover, the feasibilities of these CLBT panels were evaluated for the application in different climate regions of China and the United States in accordance with the corresponding Chinese and American building energy efficiency standards, respectively. It can be finally concluded that, the development and application of CLBT contributes to achieving the low carbon sustainable features of structures, which is due to the good carbon sequestration ability of its component materials (i.e., timber and bamboo) as well as the good insulation performance of CLBT panels.","PeriodicalId":48523,"journal":{"name":"Architectural Engineering and Design Management","volume":"19 1","pages":"511 - 530"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42299848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the best criteria for energy management systems in construction projects is Life Cycle Energy Analysis (LCEA). This research is a quantitative-qualitative study based on a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) model. This research involves four stages: library study, statistical survey, descriptive study, and case study. The review of previous studies showed that the LCEA and MCDM alone could not provide a comprehensive energy consumption management assessment model, due to inherent uncertainty and the existence of various analysis parameters; however, when are used in an integrated framework; the LCEA & MCDM hybrid approach serves as the best instruments to assess energy management systems. This research has proposed a newly developed hybrid multi-objective mathematical decision-making model to select appropriate and optimum options for all building shell components to optimize and manage the Cost and Energy of the Building Life Cycle. The life cycle energy analysis of an educational building in a case study showed that optimization using the proposed model saves about 16% of energy during the lifetime of the building. In addition, the investment payback period for this optimization is less than seven months in the first year of operation.","PeriodicalId":48523,"journal":{"name":"Architectural Engineering and Design Management","volume":"19 1","pages":"200 - 213"},"PeriodicalIF":2.9,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46084554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The criteria to light the building at night and the methodology of designing the illumination of buildings in terms of architecture are introduced. The research results are presented. The proposed methodology includes carrying out an analysis of the visibility of the city panorama and the illuminated building from key vantage points and key observation plans for the designed building, the role of illuminated buildings in spatial orientation, lighting colours, aspects of connecting lighting with the nature of the illuminated building, lighting intensity and light sources. All these issues were taken into account when designing the illumination of a high-rise building in an urban environment, especially, as in the case of Warsaw, in the absence of municipal guidelines regarding the illumination strategy of the city skyline.
