Subjects and methods: The study samples included forty patients selected from the outpatient clinic of the Department of Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, Minya University. Forty adult patients (11 males and 29 females) were non-growing patients with Average age from 18-25 years old with increased gingival show during smiling and excessive overbite diagnosed by clinical examination. All diagnostic and radiographic records were completed and the patients were divided into two groups with 20 subjects in each group. Group A was treated with traditional intrusive arch and group B was treated with intrusive arch supported on two miniscrews placed buccally between the second bicuspid and the first molar bilaterally. Results: Intrusion in upper incisors occurred by 0.95 to 1.53 mm in group A and 1.96 to 2.34 mm in group B and the amount of produced inclination during intrusion was greater in group A than group B. The amount of external apical root resorption was mild in both group with less values in group A than group B. Conclusion: Both modalities successfully intrude the upper anterior teeth but more inclination changes was observed in group A than group B and insignificant root resorption was observed in both groups.","PeriodicalId":483969,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Orthodontic Journal","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141277527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: A total of 120 participants in the age group 15-30 years were selected and divided into three groups: horizontal, average, and vertical skeletal patterns, using the following three cephalometric parameters: SN-MP, FMA, and Jarabak ratio. Two photographic records one taken during smile and the other at rest were obtained, and measurements were analyzed at rest, including upper lip length, and on smiling including maxillary incisal display, interlabial gap, inter commissure width, maxillary intercanine width, and buccal corridors. Upper lip elevation (ΔULL) was calculated. Results: buccal corridor measurements were wider in the vertical skeletal pattern compared with both the average and the horizontal skeletal pattern. Upper lip length, upper lip elevation on smiling, the intercanine width and outer inter commissure width and interlabial gap showed no statistically significant difference between the studied groups. Conclusion: Different skeletal patterns show different smile characteristics. Vertical skeletal patterns exhibit wider buccal corridors. Upper lip length was not responsible for the increased incisal show during smiling.","PeriodicalId":483969,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Orthodontic Journal","volume":"124 26","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141282023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: 30 skeletal class II patients with ANB>4 were included in the study. Computerized VTO was done using pretreatment lateral cephalograms and profile picture at rest using the Viewbox software. Clinical VTO was obtained by asking the patient to protrude lower jaw in 5mm increments and the obtained profile photographs superimposed on the initial profile at rest. Distances in soft tissue points between computerized VTO and clinical VTO were measured in millimeters at eight cephalometric soft tissue landmarks. Paired-sample t tests were done for intergroup comparisons. Results: For most of the variables, no significant differences were found between the groups. In the X-axis the most accurate prediction was found to be mentolabial sulcus while soft tissue menton was the least accurate landmark succeeded by soft tissue gnathion. In the Y-axis, stomion superius prediction and labrale inferius prediction were the most accurate measurements while mentolabial sulcus prediction was the least accurate. None of the differences were clinically significant. Conclusions: The soft tissue outcomes of positive clinical VTO are clinically acceptable in both sagittal and vertical planes and can be used for estimating post treatment soft tissue profile in skeletal class II patients.","PeriodicalId":483969,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Orthodontic Journal","volume":"39 14","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141274368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: Sixteen patients, eight females and eight males, having horizontal or normal growth pattern and cervical vertebral maturation stages (CVMS) III and IV were recruited. Bite raisers were digitally designed on the 3-shape software after intraoral scanning of the advanced bite of the patients. The models were 3D printed and Erkodur sheet was pressed over the models. Composite resin was used to fill the Erkodur template and was cured inside the patient’s mouth. Pre-treatment and post-treatment lateral cephalometric radiographs were analyzed and compared. Results: Kolmogorov-Smirnov test of normality was used to test normality of all quantitative variables. Variables were found to be normally distributed. Paired sample t test was used for comparing pre-treatment and post-treatment measurements. A P-value < 0.05 was considered significant (S); while a P-value < 0.01 was considered highly significant (HS). The soft tissue facial angle showed an increase that was statistically significant. Conclusion: The digitally driven bevelled bite raisers could improve the facial profile.","PeriodicalId":483969,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Orthodontic Journal","volume":"63 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141277197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this research was to appraise the surgery-first orthognathic approach in management of dentofacial skeletal deformities in both postsurgical skeletal stability outcomes and the whole treatment plan duration. Materials and Methods: The study operated on twelve adult patients with class III skeletal deformities with or without skeletal asymmetry that meeting our inclusion criteria, the patients were evaluated clinically and radiologically with time regimen of 3 months postoperatively and 3 months after debonding. Evaluation was performed by panoramic and lateral Cephalometric radiological examinations and study casts to assess the treatment consequence. Results: The whole treatment plan period ranged from 6 to 16 months (average, 10.58 months). The average age of the patients was 21.78 ± 2.94years. The statistical analysis showed that changes in skeletal cephalometric landmarks were significant in comparison between the presurgical and postsurgical as well as the post orthodontic treatment cephalometrics and no significant difference between the immediate postoperative cephalometric analysis and post-debonding cephalometric one which indicates favorable skeletal stability along the postsurgical orthodontic treatment. Conclusions: Surgery first orthognathic approach serves as a reliable option for management of dentofacial deformities. One way of polishing teeth is through the prophylactic polishing paste method. The recent and more conservative approach is that of abrasive powder (e.g., sodium bicarbonate), which is used in prophy jet, which is less abrasive as compared to aluminum oxide particles. The objective of this randomized clinical trial is to compare prophylactic paste and air prophy polishing methods on plaque scores in orthodontic patients who will undergo fixed orthodontic therapy. A total of 30 patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria were included in this split-mouth randomized controlled clinical trial. Included patient required placement of fixed orthodontic appliances, plaque index should be equal to or greater than 15, patient’s age ranging from 12 -30 years. Excluded patients had missing permanent teeth except for 3rd molars, advanced periodontal diseases, systemic diseases, and allergic to any of the paste content. All the patients included in the study completed the study. Results showed no significant changes in post plaque score were found between the air prophy and rubber cup groups. A statistically significant change in pre and post-plaque score was found with both air prophy and rubber cup polishing methods. There was no significant difference in reducing plaque score between air prophy or rubber cup polishing methods. Both methods can be safely used to decrease the plaque score in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances.","PeriodicalId":483969,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Orthodontic Journal","volume":"37 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141274440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: Forty natural teeth were divided in a random manner into four groups of equal size. The first group, denoted as the control group, comprised non-bonded teeth. The second group included stainless steel brackets bonded with a conventional light-curing adhesive. The third group consisted of adhesive coated metal flash free brackets bonded to teeth. Finally, the fourth group consisted of adhesive coated ceramic flash-free brackets that were bonded to teeth. After bonding, demineralization at the gingival side of the brackets was measured using a diagnodent pen. Teeth in all groups were subsequently subjected to demineralization to develop artificial carious lesions. A second measure for demineralization was recorded for each group. The demineralization values of the four groups were subjected to statistical analysis using One-Way ANOVA test followed by pot Hoc LSD analysis between every two groups. Results: Before the process of demineralization, there were insignificant differences among the four groups (P=0.784). Following the process of demineralization, significant differences became apparent among the four groups, with group II demonstrating a higher value in comparison to groups III and IV (P< 0.001). Conclusions: The enamel demineralization level was higher around conventional brackets when compared to flash-free brackets. Both metal and ceramic flash free brackets showed similar amounts of enamel demineralization around them.","PeriodicalId":483969,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Orthodontic Journal","volume":"27 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141274463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
