A between-subjects experiment (News Recommender System type: content-based filtering vs. collaborative filtering vs. human editorial choice-based recommender system) with 161 participants revealed that participants tended to trust the collaborative filtering system and perceive news recommended by the system to be more credible and less biased compared to editorial choices-based or content-based recommender systems – due to the triggering of the homophily heuristic – even though the three systems recommended the same set of news. Implications were discussed.","PeriodicalId":48051,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media","volume":"67 1","pages":"294 - 322"},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2023-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48097495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study found that compared to scientific information, the misleading claims about the harmlessness of e-cigarettes may encourage smokers to prefer e-cigarettes to complete cessation. Further, to correct e-cigarette misinformation on social media, perceived source credibility mediates the effect of the message source on the message trust. The study outlines suggestions for misinformation correction.","PeriodicalId":48051,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media","volume":"67 1","pages":"376 - 396"},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2023-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46582037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sample consists of 31 parents and 30 children (ages 9 to 14; average age is 11) who participated in focus groups. The results of focus groups with parents and children showed that they recognize four similar types of strategies with slight differences. Children often do not recognize clear rules about DT use. Active mediation is perceived by children as co-use, while parents usually talk about the consequences of DT use and highlight balancing with other activities. Without a prepared media plan, parents describe mediation as “a struggle.” The findings point to mediation being “a dynamic process” with children as active agents.","PeriodicalId":48051,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media","volume":"67 1","pages":"206 - 224"},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2023-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48875406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The CAPI with 101 participants nationwide examines algorithmic news consumption from several interrelated perspectives, including personalization, news appreciation, echo chambers, algorithmic literacy, and news literacy. The study finds that users of AI-powered news apps often trust and even prefer algorithmic to human judgement but are concerned about missing out on important information and challenging viewpoints, as well as about their privacy. Many participants, while ambivalent about living with algorithm-based news recommendations, commonly exhibit a sense of comfort, appreciation, and gratification with personalized news feeds, calling the use of news apps a pleasant and satisfactory experience. While participants in general report being less active in searching information after using news apps, many participants believe that they are, ironically, more informed and knowledgeable now that they have the news apps.","PeriodicalId":48051,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media","volume":"67 1","pages":"246 - 273"},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2023-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45414230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Presented with a pro-climate change regulations news article, participants who read the version with animated visualizations perceived the story to be more biased than those who were presented with static images. Further, a perceived advocacy motive mediated the triggering of an animated visualization to arouse more biased perceptions in favor of climate regulations. The implications for democratic ideals are discussed.","PeriodicalId":48051,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media","volume":"67 1","pages":"161 - 182"},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2023-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48774145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We examine the nudging effect of Accuracy Alerts on users’ ability to discern misinformation and how their trust moderates this effect. The results from a 2 (accuracy nudge: with nudge vs. no nudge) × 2 (news source type: algorithmic news vs. legacy non-algorithmic news) experiment showed significant main and interaction effects indicating that an algorithmic source effect is present in the process of nudge acceptance. Misinformation sharing intention was largely lower for legacy non-algorithmic news than algorithmic news, but there was a greater decrease in algorithmic news when nudging was employed.","PeriodicalId":48051,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media","volume":"67 1","pages":"141 - 160"},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2023-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49309648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
