Many are 3D mirror-symmetrical and others are 3D rotational-symmetrical. But note that their retinal images are 2D symmetrical only in degenerate views. It has been suggested that a human observer can detect 3D mirror-symmetry even from a 2D retinal image of a 3D mirror-symmetrical pair of contours. There are model-based invariants of the 3D mirror-symmetrical pair of contours in the retinal image and there are additional invariant features when the contours are individually planar. There are also model-based invariants of a 3D rotational-symmetrical pair of contours. These invariant features of 3D mirror-symmetry and rotational-symmetry are analogous to one another but the features of 3D rotational-symmetry are computationally more difficult than the features of 3D mirror-symmetry. Experiment 1 showed that only 3D mirror-symmetry could be detected reliably while the detection of 3D rotational-symmetry was close to chance-level. Experiment 2 showed that the detection of 3D mirror-symmetry is partly based on the model-based invariants of 3D mirror-symmetry and the planarity of the contours. These results show that the visual system has evolved to favour the perception of 3D mirror-symmetry.","PeriodicalId":47961,"journal":{"name":"VISUAL COGNITION","volume":"30 1","pages":"546 - 563"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43547445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Repeating any of an event file’s components retrieves the previously bound information, causing benefits for full repetition, but interference for partial repetition. Yet, such “binding effects” are absent in localization performance. By assuming sequential processing steps until response execution as assumed in visual search, we hypothesized that, for localization, participants can execute their response without the need to process target features. Hence, post-selective processing might be crucial for binding effects to emerge. Here, participants localized coloured targets appearing on one of four corners of a touchpad in two response conditions, namely, directly tapping on the target (direct response mapping), and tapping on the corner diagonal opposite to the target (translational response mapping). Only the translational response mapping yielded binding effects between localization response and colour. The direct response mapping instead showed an effect that is better explained by (non-spatial) Inhibition of Return or related change benefit effects. We conclude that an arbitrary response mapping – based on a translation of a spatial feature into a non-direct spatial response – can lead to binding effects even in localization tasks.","PeriodicalId":47961,"journal":{"name":"VISUAL COGNITION","volume":"30 1","pages":"527 - 545"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43795102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using a sample of 259 Chinese primary students, this study investigated the visual perception properties that underlie the relationship between numerosity processing and arithmetic ability. A series of cognitive tasks were used to assess their numerosity processing, arithmetic fluency, visual perception, and other general cognitive abilities as cognitive covariates. Visual perceptions were measured through figure matching, luminance matching, colour matching, and area matching tasks. The results showed that form, luminance, area, and colour perception significantly correlated with numerosity processing. Only form perception fully accounted for the close relationship between numerosity and arithmetic fluency. These results suggested that visual form perception was fundamental for numerosity processing and arithmetic fluency.","PeriodicalId":47961,"journal":{"name":"VISUAL COGNITION","volume":"30 1","pages":"517 - 526"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42450858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To test whether QE can facilitate processing complex information, 12 elite table tennis players (M age = 14.66 years, M experience = 7.33 years) hit 100 balls, either on the entire opponent’s half (simple condition) or on narrow spots on the table (complex condition). We found that hit balls were preceded by longer QE than missed balls (p = .035, η²p = .34). Moreover, in the complex condition athletes extended the duration of QE more for scoring a hit, compared to the simple condition (p = .005, η²p = .52). Finally, athletes increased the duration of QE more after a missed than after a hit ball (p = .059, η2p = .38). This study shows that QE sustains performance in a dynamic sport, by helping athletes to process complex information, and by facilitating their recovery after missed shots.","PeriodicalId":47961,"journal":{"name":"VISUAL COGNITION","volume":"30 1","pages":"506 - 516"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49382709","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To understand these effects, it is necessary to understand how colour-concept associations are formed. It is assumed that colour-concept associations are learned through experiences, but questions remain concerning how association formation is influenced by properties of the input and cognitive factors. We addressed these questions by first exposing participants to colour-concept co-occurrences for novel concepts (“Filk” and “Slub” alien species) using a category learning task. We then assessed colour-concept associations using an association rating task. During alien category learning, colour was a noisy cue and shape was 100% diagnostic of category membership, so participants could ignore colour to complete the task. Nonetheless, participants learned systematic colour-concept associations for “seen” colours during alien category learning and generalized to “unseen” colours as a function of colour distance from the seen colours (Experiment 1). Association formation not only depended on colour-concept co-occurrences during alien category learning, but also on cognitive structure of colour categories (e.g., degree to which an observed red colour is typical of the colour category “red”) (Experiment 2). Thus, environmental and cognitive factors combine to influence colour-concept associations formed from experiences in the world.","PeriodicalId":47961,"journal":{"name":"VISUAL COGNITION","volume":"30 1","pages":"457 - 479"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49205827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, the related phenomenon of visual working memory (VWM) crowding has been used to evaluate shared mechanisms between memory and perception. However, some previous studies that investigated VWM crowding suggested that it stemmed from encoding, rather than memory maintenance. In the current study, we evaluated two measures in simultaneously-presented arrays: anisotropy for radially vs. tangentially configured arrays, and effect of target to array proximity (array middle vs. edge targets). Simultaneously presented arrays evoked effects in both measures. We then compared the data from the current study to that from our previous study that used sequential presentation, and thus avoided encoding-based explanations for crowding. We predicted that we would observe greater crowding for simultaneous than sequential presentation because simultaneous arrays allow for two opportunities for crowding—encoding and maintenance—while sequential arrays only allow for maintenance-based crowding. Surprisingly, we observed that both measures were similar across simultaneous and sequential arrays. These results indicate that VWM crowding does not have an additive error mechanism across encoding and maintenance. Moreover, the anisotropy result suggests that both simultaneous and sequential array VWM crowding is influenced by retinotopy in the early visual cortex.","PeriodicalId":47961,"journal":{"name":"VISUAL COGNITION","volume":"30 1","pages":"490 - 505"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48964277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This effect is known as Roelofs (or Dietzel-Roelofs) effect. When asked to judge the position of an object relative to an external reference under related conditions of sensory asymmetry a systematical bias of the opposite direction is usually observed. This effect has been called induced Roelofs effect. Here, I suggest that these illusions result from different attentional states caused by sensory asymmetry that are accompanied by changes in low-level spatial coding. This approach interlinks earlier ideas on the Roelofs effects and recent research on spatial attention, and can provide new insights into the origin of these effects.","PeriodicalId":47961,"journal":{"name":"VISUAL COGNITION","volume":"30 1","pages":"480 - 489"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44199629","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We investigated how different choice sets affect the ability of confidence and visibility judgments to retrieve conscious information from perceptual decision-making processes. Six participants made introspective judgments on sinusoidal gratings at close to chance signal-to-noise values. We used signal detection theory and mixed regression models to analyze choices and pupilometric recordings. The results suggest that allowing null responses (e.g., “I saw nothing”) asymmetrically affects the signal distribution variances associated with null and non-null responses; confidence is more effective than visibility in accessing unconscious information; and bias-free methods hinder accurate introspective judgment by forbidding free decision criteria. Our findings underscore the importance of the context afforded by choice and stimulus sets, which determines the extent to which elicited introspective judgments are based on the actual information from the past events they are intended to measure.","PeriodicalId":47961,"journal":{"name":"VISUAL COGNITION","volume":"30 1","pages":"393 - 424"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43053925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, several studies have highlighted the importance of peripheral vision for scene categorization. In Experiment 1, we investigated if peripheral vision could influence the scene categorization in central vision. We used photographs of indoor and outdoor scenes from which we extracted a central disk and a peripheral ring. Stimuli were composed of a central disk and a peripheral ring that could be either semantically congruent or incongruent. Participants had to categorize the central disk while ignoring the peripheral ring or the peripheral ring while ignoring the central disk. Results revealed a congruence effect of peripheral vision on central vision, as strong as the reverse. In Experiment 2, we investigated the nature of the physical signal in peripheral vision that influences the categorization in central vision. We used either intact, phase-preserved, or amplitude-preserved peripheral rings. Participants had to categorize the central disk while ignoring the peripheral ring. Results showed that only phase-preserved peripheral rings elicited a congruence effect as strong as the one observed with intact peripheral rings. Information contained in the phase spectrum (spatial configuration of the scene) may be critical in peripheral vision.","PeriodicalId":47961,"journal":{"name":"VISUAL COGNITION","volume":"30 1","pages":"425 - 442"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44751113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current study adapted the Variant Odd Ball protocol to explore the effects of threat and familiarity on inattentional blindness (IB). This research evaluated reactions to presentations of evolutionarily relevant images such as millipedes, snakes, escargots, and snails, compared with reactions to evolutionarily irrelevant images such as syringes, knives, flashlights, and spoons. Respondents included three hundred and forty 4–5-year-old preschool children. The findings were as follows: (1) The property of familiarity plays an important role in preschool children’s IB to both evolutionarily relevant and irrelevant images, and highly familiar images were easier to detect than less familiar images; (2) the manipulation of images showed that the threat-relevant stimuli were not more likely to be detected than the non-threat-relevant stimuli; (3) no significant difference was found between the detection rates of evolutionarily relevant and irrelevant images. Preschool children have a lower detection rate of threat-relevant images (e.g., snake, knife) which may reflect their limited experience of danger and weaker integration of these threat-relevant images in the current study.","PeriodicalId":47961,"journal":{"name":"VISUAL COGNITION","volume":"30 1","pages":"305 - 317"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46864868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
