Fear in the context of IPV has been studied for decades yet, we lack a rigorously validated measure. The purpose of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the psychometric properties of a multi-item scale measuring fear of an abusive male partner and/or the abuse he perpetrates.

Method: We used Item Response modeling to evaluate the psychometric properties of a scale measuring women's fear of IPV by their male partner across two distinct samples: 1) a calibration sample of 412 women and 2) a confirmation sample of 298 women.

Results: Results provide a detailed overview of the psychometric functioning of the Intimate Partner Violence Fear-11 Scale. Items were strongly related to the latent fear factor, with discrimination values universally above a = 0.80 in both samples. Overall, the IPV Fear-11 Scale is psychometrically robust across both samples. All items were highly discriminating and the full scale was reliable across the range of the latent fear trait. Reliability was exceptionally high for measuring individuals experiencing moderate to high levels of fear. Finally, the IPV Fear-11 Scale was moderately to strongly correlated with depression symptoms, posttraumatic stress symptoms and physical victimization.

Conclusions: The IPV Fear-11 Scale was psychometrically robust across both samples and was associated with a number of relevant covariates. Results support the utility of the IPV Fear-11 Scale for assessing fear of an abusive partner among women in relationships with men.
","PeriodicalId":47876,"journal":{"name":"Psychology of Violence","volume":"13 2","pages":"161-170"},"PeriodicalIF":2.8,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10103837/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"9329048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because a common function of deliberate self-harm is to reduce negative internal states, SV survivors may use self-harm to cope with impairments in broader affective processes associated with PTSD symptoms. To test this hypothesis, the present study examined the role of two aspects of emotional responding (i.e., state emotional reactivity and emotion dysregulation) as mechanisms between greater PTSD symptoms and risk for future deliberate self-harm among SV survivors.

Method: Participants were 140 community women with a history of SV who completed two waves of data collection. At baseline, participants reported on their PTSD symptoms, as well as state emotional reactivity and state emotion dysregulation following a standardized laboratory stressor task (i.e., the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Task [PASAT-C]). Participants then completed a self-report measure of deliberate self-harm 4 months later.

Results: Results from a parallel mediation analysis indicated that greater state emotion dysregulation, but not state emotional reactivity, mediated prospective associations between more severe PTSD symptoms at baseline and greater risk for deliberate self-harm 4-months later.

Conclusions: Applied to the context of survivors' daily lives, these findings underscore the importance of deficits in emotion regulation during times of distress in predicting risk for later deliberate self-harm.
","PeriodicalId":47876,"journal":{"name":"Psychology of Violence","volume":"13 1","pages":"23-33"},"PeriodicalIF":2.8,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10241447/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"9974259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the association between polysubstance use and violence perpetration is less clear, despite the frequency of use of alcohol with other drugs. Additionally, protective factors such as mindfulness that may reduce violence perpetration among emerging adults have been understudied. This cross-sectional study examined the association between substance use, trait mindfulness, and violence perpetration outside of romantic relationships, utilizing a compensatory model of resilience.

Methods: Data were drawn from a sample of 665 emerging adults ages 18-25, recruited from an urban Emergency Department (68% men). Participants self-administered a computer survey that assessed non-partner violence perpetration (NPV), alcohol use, marijuana use, prescription drug misuse, and trait mindfulness. Fifteen percent reported non-partner violence perpetration over the past six months.

Results: Multivariate logistic regression tested associations between violence perpetration, substance use, trait mindfulness, and demographic characteristics. Results showed that alcohol use alone (OR= 3.04), prescription opioid use alone (OR = 3.58), alcohol and marijuana use (OR = 3.75), and use of all three substances (OR= 7.78) were positively associated with violence perpetration. Post-hoc contrasts demonstrated the polysubstance use significantly increased risk over single substance use. Trait mindfulness (OR= 0.97) was negatively associated with violence perpetration after controlling for substance use.

Conclusions: Findings suggest that polysubstance use may increase risk for violence.
