How does a cancer diagnosis shape adolescents’ and young adults’ views of their future and their purposes in life? To explore these questions, we conducted interviews with adolescent and young adult cancer survivors (AYA; N = 40). Findings suggest that following a diagnosis, nearly all participants feared their futures could be severely limited, which led a few to react with high levels of anxiety, a few others to focus on living in the moment, and most to commit to using their remaining time engaged in personally meaningful, generative activities. Nearly all participants reflected seriously on their purpose in life. Implications of these findings for AYAs, their caregivers, and others experiencing life-threatening illnesses during this formative period, are addressed.","PeriodicalId":47792,"journal":{"name":"Applied Developmental Science","volume":"27 1","pages":"68 - 82"},"PeriodicalIF":3.8,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46030459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From the cumulative risk perspective, homelessness is perched at the extreme edge of economic insecurity, suggesting that homeless students would encounter additional hardship beyond what may be incurred by the experience of poverty alone (Brumley et al., 2015). Using a continuum of risk framework (Masten et al., 1993), this study leveraged statewide administrative data from a 6th grade cohort of Maryland public school students (N= 52,610) to investigate the association between homelessness and educational and early labor market outcomes, above and beyond the associations linked to poverty. Findings provide support for the continuum of risk in relation to educational outcomes; however, no significant differences were observed in early labor market outcomes, although racial differences were detected. This study underscores the importance of targeted interventions in promoting positive, long-term outcomes, particularly for students who were homeless in adolescence.","PeriodicalId":47792,"journal":{"name":"Applied Developmental Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.8,"publicationDate":"2022-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48317538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Participants were working-class Chilean adolescents (<i>N</i> = 692; <i>M</i><sub>age</sub> 16.0 years; 54.5% female) who provided frequency of past 30-day bingeing and past-year intoxication. Neurocognitive measures were completed in young adulthood (<i>M</i><sub>age</sub> 21.2 years). Illicit substance users were excluded a priori and other substance use was controlled. When males and females were considered simultaneously, no main effects of intoxication or bingeing were found. However, several sex-specific effects emerged for intoxication, such that more frequent intoxication was associated with poorer visual memory, attention, processing speed, response inhibition, and cognitive flexibility in females, while frequent intoxication related to better attention and processing speed in males. In general, effect sizes were small. No relations emerged for verbal memory, working memory, or spatial learning. Possible factors that contribute to divergent sex effects are discussed.</p>","PeriodicalId":47792,"journal":{"name":"Applied Developmental Science","volume":"14 3-4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.8,"publicationDate":"2022-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138527521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
