Ambidexterity, the ability to optimise the existing and innovate new business concepts, is widely accepted as a critical concept of sustainable success. We conducted a literature review (period from 2010 to 2021) on what differential aspects of exploration and exploitation are needed to lead a digital transformation. With the help of a structured selection process, we identified 94 relevant papers. Our findings show that all reviewed articles on digital transformation contain aspects of exploration and exploitation, often without deep specifications. We reveal that structural ambidexterity, leadership, and collaboration are the focus areas related to ambidexterity in digital transformation. Digital transformations fail by not achieving the intended innovation outcome resulting from inadequate key performance indicators and focussing on short-term profitability. Our findings provide first insights but need additional empirical research for validation and more detailed knowledge on ambidexterity in digital transformation. Digital transformation; digitalisation; ambidexterity; exploration; exploitation.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2023-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48837737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper plugs the gap around design and implementation of new BM and role of diverse strategic orientations. The empiric in the paper is supported by structure equation modelling and findings confirm the validity of the model thereby providing theoretical support around complexity of BM and its relationship with three strategic orientations. In the light of strategic importance around renewed business model, our paper is a timely contribution to understanding some of the antecedents of novel business model, its link to business performance and implementation of BM across firms in manufacturing and service sectors.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2023-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41891008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dynamics of productivity in the telecommunications equipment industry. Econometrica, 64(6), 1263–1297.] method and the generalised propensity score (GPS) methodology to estimate the effects of R&D and its different types, including research activity and development activity, on productivity. Our research sample is an unbalanced panel data consisting of 1808 Chinese listed manufacturing firms from the period 2006–2015. Our analysis reveals how R&D and its different types impact firm productivity: (1) there exists an S-shaped relationship between firm R&D intensity and productivity, which implies the existence of the threshold and diminishing marginal return of R&D for productivity growth. Due to the unbalanced composition of R&D in China, after R&D intensity reaches a critical level (around 50%) a negative marginal effect of R&D presents; (2) an increase of research intensity can improve firm productivity. However, research intensity reaches a saturation point (around 65%) beyond which firm productivity plateaus; (3) there exists an inverted U-shaped relationship between firm development intensity and productivity. The marginal effect of development on firm productivity is negative when development intensity is over 28%. Our empirical evidence implies that firms need to optimise the composition of R&D expenditure in order to realise sustained productivity growth.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2023-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42178370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Companies are under pressure to rethink existing innovation paradigms. In this context, research interest in the resource-constrained innovation concept, frugal innovation, has increased. In this paper, we examine the impact of frugal innovation on the economic, social, and ecological sustainability dimensions by conducting a systematic literature review of 44 papers. We find that frugal innovation is a promising approach to promote sustainable development from an economic perspective and a social perspective. Nevertheless, positive and negative effects exist in all three dimensions. Thus, a positive relationship is not inherent but must be proactively formed. External factors can influence the impact of frugal innovation on sustainability. For future research we recommend (1) establishing a unified understanding of frugal innovation through a clear definition, (2) broadening the research focus to a global perspective, (3) assessing the impact of frugal innovation along the entire product life cycle, and (4) investigating characteristics that make frugal innovation sustainable.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2023-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44362940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This means these leaders have to be manufacturers and digital at the same time, to avoid digital, technological and innovative illiteracy. This study aims to determine how digitalisation and innovation have a positive influence on the advantages of digital entrepreneurship in SMEs. To achieve this objective, the quantitative method of structural equation modelling (SEM) was used, with data-collection being based on a questionnaire. The results obtained show that digitalisation and innovation greatly increase the advantages of digital entrepreneurship when the intention is to maximise efficiency, customer relations and stimulate better behaviour among collaborators. Specifically, this study shows how SME managers can embrace new business opportunities supported by the use of information technology and by adopting an organisational culture of innovation. In this way, these small firms can raise their competitiveness in relation to their rivals. Conclusions, contributions, limitations and indications for future research are also presented.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45195708","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, given that innovation and patents form part of firms’ broader competitive strategies, patenting can include many other objectives such as blocking, increasing prestige and improving bargaining power, among others. The evidence about this kind of strategic and competitive use of patents is extensive for developed countries but almost null for developing countries. This paper aims to contribute to filling this gap in two ways: firstly, by analysing Argentine firms’ motivations for patenting and, secondly, by exploring the determinants of such motivations. The data used comes from the most recent Argentine innovation survey (ENDEI II), which provides information on around 300 manufacturing firms that applied for patents between 2014 and 2016. The findings show that Argentine firms follow one of two composite patenting strategies, the most common one being guided by objectives related to protection, including different types of blocking, and the other being guided by the less technological goals identified by the literature on strategic patenting, such as prestige, bargaining and licences.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2023-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49059078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, a sample of 152 articles obtained through a systematic process was used. This SLR provides analytical data on the studies that were processed and identifies different areas and levels of study such as the spatial, institutional, firm, individual, and organisational levels relating to the relationship between entrepreneurship and OI. The review concludes with a discussion of the results and with the presentation of the main conclusions along with contributions aimed at scholars and practitioners and provides insights for future research.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2023-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41806826","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through a cross-case analysis of 12 case studies along the R&D-intensity spectrum (6 low-medium technology (LMT) and 6 medium-high/high-technology (HMHT) case studies selected), this research study explores our understanding of SMEs’ differences within the similar by asking the following question—how does open innovation manifest itself within the heterogeneous context of SMEs innovation practices? Our findings reinforce the heterogeneity of OI SME innovation practices by revealing the following. First, the rationale and importance of OI adoption differs—principally operational (LMT) vs. strategic (HMHT). Second, distinct OI partners are leveraged depending on the R&D intensity of the SME namely LMT SMEs typically partner with smaller scale SME partners known to them whereas for HMHT SMEs, there is a tendency to partner with larger scale, more geographically and cognitively distant partners. OI adoption for LMT SMEs tended to be short-term in duration, demonstrating a tendency to switchback to a closed innovation paradigm once OI motivating constraints were addressed. In contrast, our findings highlighted how HMHT SMEs explored more coupled OI modes. This study further reveals how OI SME can be peripheral in nature with many SMEs at a competitive disadvantage in the long term as the collaborative capabilities derived from engaging in deeper modes of OI are not being explored.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2023-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42541080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, even if some studies recognise the problems with low company methodology awareness and use, the underlying causes remain unexplained. In a survey mode of inquiry involving informants in 19 global manufacturing companies in six sectors of the process industries, this study explores use and usability of methodologies in the development of non-assembled products in the process industries. While the findings demonstrate a rather scarce use of innovation methodologies, when they are used case-company informants not only report a high degree of usability but also recommend that all introduced methodologies should be included in an enhanced product innovation work process. The discussion advocates that an overarching strategy for methodology use should be institutionalised by company R&D management, including a “methodology tool-box” of select methodologies, and further facilitated by trained methodology experts as “ambassadors”.","PeriodicalId":47711,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Innovation Management","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.1,"publicationDate":"2023-02-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48239705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
