We address this gap by exploring qualitatively whether there is evidence of an overriding role of the institutional context over the institutional logic, evidence of conforming to conflicting institutional logics in the same organization, and evidence of the effect of bounded rationality, bounded reliability, and the MNE subsidiary institutional logics in tackling corruption. Data was collected conducting 42 semi-structured interviews on 7 MNE subsidiaries from 7 distinct MNEs operating in four Sub-Saharan African countries (Mauritius, Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria). Results reveal how deeply ingrained corruption makes strict compliance costly, how headquarters' enforcement of mandates is perceived as weak, and how short-term performance pressures additionally complicate compliance. Our findings advance the literature on institutional logics via multiple contributions highlighted; Firstly, evidence of the overriding role of the Sub-Saharan institutional context over the institutional logic. Secondly, evidence of the support behind the co-existence of conflicting institutional logics in the MNE subsidiary. Finally, the effect of bounded rationality/reliability of MNE and subsidiary institutional logics in tackling corruption is highlighted.</p>","PeriodicalId":47515,"journal":{"name":"Thunderbird International Business Review","volume":"68 1","pages":"89-105"},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2025-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/tie.70010","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145706489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, it explores how Germany's neo-liberal Marshall Plan with Africa influences the investment decisions of German companies in Africa. The analysis is based on in-depth semi-structured key informant interviews conducted with German companies, business associations and development cooperation institutions active in Côte d'Ivoire—one of the largest French-speaking countries in Africa. This paper introduces reputational and network effects of development cooperation on FDI into the mainstream international business literature. This contribution is illustrated by showing how the reputational and network effects of development cooperation provide a clear signal to the German firms an improved image of the host country due to its reform partner status. The study also extends the development economic view that new forms of development cooperation can significantly impact FDI. It further contributes to the location-specific factors within the entry strategy literature by suggesting that development cooperation and a country's reputation are critical in shaping firm-level decisions and government policy for most emerging economies seeking to attract FDI.</p>","PeriodicalId":47515,"journal":{"name":"Thunderbird International Business Review","volume":"68 1","pages":"57-73"},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2025-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/tie.70019","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145706372","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing on interdisciplinary insights from international business, psychology, politics, and communications, this study develops a theoretical framework to explore the relationship between media and animosity and to investigate the impact of animosity on the attractiveness of EMNEs. We test our theoretical claims in the context of China and the Netherlands, offering theoretical implications for IB research and managerial implications for Chinese firms and policymakers amid the current West–China confrontational dynamics. Using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) on data collected through a survey, this study finds that media salience is not directly associated with the attractiveness of Chinese firms operating in the Netherlands. However, it is indirectly related to attractiveness through animosity. Additionally, this study reveals the multidimensional nature of animosity by investigating its two distinct yet interconnected components: cognitive and affective elements. It shows that these elements influence each other in a sequence.</p>","PeriodicalId":47515,"journal":{"name":"Thunderbird International Business Review","volume":"68 1","pages":"75-88"},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2025-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/tie.70021","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145706373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given Africa's vulnerability to external influences, this study is conducted for two reasons: first, to explore the unconditional impact of antiglobalization on Africa's structural transformation, and second, to analyze the conditional effects of human capital development on the continent's structural transformation. In this study, antiglobalization is examined in the context of its risks to the economic, political, social, and financial dimensions of globalization. These risks were quantified with standard errors obtained from first-order autoregressive processes of respective globalization proxies. The analysis focuses on 48 African countries, utilizing data from 2010 to 2022. The fixed effects regression, Driscoll–Kraay fixed effects standard error regression, and the bias-corrected least squares dummy variable (LSDV) were adopted as estimation techniques, with the third serving as a robustness check. The study finds that human capital development positively moderates the negative unconditional impact of antiglobalization on Africa's structural transformation. Critical levels of human capital development for such moderation are provided. Other findings from the study and their associated policy recommendations are discussed in line with the 2063 African Union's agenda and the United Nations' sustainable development goals (SDGs).</p>","PeriodicalId":47515,"journal":{"name":"Thunderbird International Business Review","volume":"68 1","pages":"33-56"},"PeriodicalIF":3.2,"publicationDate":"2025-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/tie.70017","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145706565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the natural resource-based view (NRBV), dynamic capability theory, and institutional theory, the study seeks to examine the roles of GSCM, absorptive capacity, and institutional pressures on the direct relationship between green innovation and sustainability performance. Data were collected from 370 senior supply chain professionals in private firms in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana and analyzed using covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM). The results indicate that green innovation has a positive effect on GSCM. It also indicates that GSCM mediates the relationship between green innovation and sustainability performance. However, absorptive capacity and institutional pressures do not moderate the direct relationship. To address this inertia, a fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) is employed, which examines the influence of ecosystem factors on new venture development in two key MENA countries, namely Algeria and Saudi Arabia. The findings indicate that physical, commercial, and legal infrastructure are important factors for EEs in both countries. In response, nation-states have adopted more assertive approaches, including new industrial policies, global protectionism, and tit-for-tat strategies to reshape global power dynamics. This paper argues that firms can serve as a “political force for good” in this evolving landscape. By embracing Corporate Political Responsibility and Corporate Diplomacy, companies can engage proactively with social stakeholders and policymakers to pursue balanced, well-being-enhancing outcomes. The paper explores how firms, particularly in economic-industrial and geoeconomic spheres, may address the challenges of multipolar globalization by assuming state-like roles—providing public goods—and collaborating with governments to shape regulation, build resilience, and mitigate global conflicts. However, it has since evolved to resemble the very institutions it sought to challenge. This paper examines the transformation of the sharing economy through the lens of institutionalization, focusing on how its business models have transformed from their original ambitions. The paper theorizes that endogenous mechanisms drive business model content changes, while exogenous ones reshape business model structure and governance. Rather than offering a celebratory account of this new turn, this research explores how a digital platform initiative pioneered by Ant Forest leverages a gamified reward system to mobilize emotional incentives, platform integration, and social participation to cultivate what we term “digital green citizenry.” Incentivizing millions of users in China to engage in low-carbon behaviors—such as walking and making digital payments, we unpack how Ant Forest's dual incentive model—combining habit formation with emotional fulfillment—has enabled the integration of sustainability into users' everyday routines.
