This research contributes to the theoretical advancement of crisis communication and social psychology theories and provides guidance for professionals navigating emerging forms of paracrises. Results from this experimental design study reveal that during orchestrated disinformation campaigns, an astroturf paracrisis can damage the credibility of a targeted organization. Findings share how political ideology affects perceptions of news credibility during these campaigns and how combined proactive and reactive messaging can attenuate the effects of an astroturfer across the political spectrum.","PeriodicalId":47080,"journal":{"name":"Communication Studies","volume":"74 1","pages":"393 - 411"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43338849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This can lead to detrimental consequences, including substance abuse, depression, and suicide. In an attempt to learn more about the stigma surrounding military-related PTS, this study used interviews to explore how veterans with PTS describe stigma communication in two different contexts: within the military organization and from members of society. All four of Smith’s (2007) model of stigma communication content cues (labels, marks, personal responsibility, and social peril) were present when veterans described military stigma about veterans experiencing PTS. Three content cues (labels, marks, and social peril) were present when veterans described public stigma surrounding veterans experiencing PTS. Theoretically, this study presents unique experiences related to how stigma is communicated about individuals experiencing an invisible illness, or what Goffman (1963) describes as “discreditable” individuals. Practically, the results can aid in developing destigmatizing campaigns and interventions.","PeriodicalId":47080,"journal":{"name":"Communication Studies","volume":"74 1","pages":"447 - 461"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44327176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite dwindling numbers, the passion and heart of family farm members remain strong as they continue to farm. This study utilized stress and coping theory to explore family farm member experiences with stress and how they communicatively cope. Zoom interviews with 26 family farm members revealed two common stressors: (1) environmental and (2) financial. Participants also noted three coping strategies: (1) reframe to the family, (2) reframe to nature, and (3) reframe to the farmer identity. Results showed a complex network for managing stress that often characterizes objects as both stressor and coping technique. Theoretically, this article points to the importance of considering recurrent stressors, defined as stress generated from events outside of the individual’s ability to control, and that repeatedly occur within one’s environment. These data also highlight the need to integrate cognitive restructuring into stress and coping research, as participants reported reframing sources of stress as the sources for coping. Practically, we offer the following applied suggestions to address family farm member stress: (1) listen to and recognize farm stress and (2) teach coping skills.","PeriodicalId":47080,"journal":{"name":"Communication Studies","volume":"74 1","pages":"481 - 498"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49405111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reports revealed that the convention and its congregants downplayed rather than confront the abuses by relying on two doctrinal components, congregational autonomy and scriptural inerrancy, to excuse inaction and silence survivors. Kenneth Burke argues that orientations such as the Southern Baptist Convention is governed by a moral order that is established, maintained, and enforced by a group of rhetors he terms “priests” who are granted ownership of the key rhetorical components. Building from Burke’s positions, I argue that when confronted by moral failings, priests will use their associations with the symbols of authority in an orientation to rationalize inaction. Priests will argue that to act would be to reject core terms in the orientation’s identity and rely on communal allegiance to bypass responsibility. This rhetorical maneuver is demonstrated in the Southern Baptist sexual abuse scandal. The leadership of the convention and local congregations relied on key denominational terms to champion inaction when confronted. However, a closer inspection of their rhetoric on other issues, such as women in ministry and LGBTQIA + issues shows that their operations are more complicated than advertised.","PeriodicalId":47080,"journal":{"name":"Communication Studies","volume":"74 1","pages":"499 - 514"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46282402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using a phronetic iterative analysis, participant experiences were examined in terms of (a) choices to express or suppress their negative feelings and (b) the reasons underlying their disclosure decisions. Significant themes emerged with both response categories. The themes and study findings are discussed in relation to privacy management, subjective norms, and bystander intervention work. Further implications of these findings are also discussed in their extension of and relevance to existing work on compliance-centered interventions and disclosure decisions in health-related contexts.","PeriodicalId":47080,"journal":{"name":"Communication Studies","volume":"74 1","pages":"462 - 480"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46612188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As people turned to creative means of voicing their opinions, placards became important tools of questioning the government and the bill. Based on framing and the vernacular rhetoric of social movements, this study examined how placards used in anti-CAA movement in India expressed their disapproval of the discriminatory law. In an era of digital activism, this study attempts to emphasize the relevance of traditional media, especially the media of the protest emanating from the anti-CAA movement.","PeriodicalId":47080,"journal":{"name":"Communication Studies","volume":"74 1","pages":"322 - 336"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41887204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The utility of dispositional forgiveness for individuals and relationships is clear; however, the specific factors that encourage favorable outcomes associated with dispositional forgiveness remain unclear. In two studies I assessed individuals’ self, other, and situational forgiveness; faith in, dependability on, and predictability with same-sex best friends; cognitive and emotional well-being; sent affectionate communication and verbal aggression to same-sex best friends; and relationship satisfaction with same-sex best friends. Results indicated that faith in and dependability on same-sex best friends mediated the association between other forgiveness and cognitive and emotional well-being. In addition, affectionate communication mediated the association between other forgiveness and relationship satisfaction.","PeriodicalId":47080,"journal":{"name":"Communication Studies","volume":"74 1","pages":"377 - 392"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43644426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study explores personal and relational correlates of LGBTQ+ people’s gaslighting experiences, examines demographic and relational characteristics of gaslighters, and identifies common gaslighting techniques. Results (N = 365 U.S. LGBTQ+ adults) showed that LGBTQ+ people’s demographic factors were generally not related to their gaslighting experiences. Participants having an affirmative LGBTQ+ identity and experiencing higher relational power reported less gaslighting. Yet, gaslighting experiences were correlated with adverse mental and physical health consequences and lower relational satisfaction. Fathers were identified as the most typical gaslighters, followed by mothers and male friends, and lastly female friends. Respondents identified various overt gaslighting tactics, including devaluing and questioning the significance and validity of LGBTQ+ identities, purposefully forgetting what has occurred, and controlling conversations. Few participants mentioned more subtle forms of gaslighting. Thus, gaslighting is a serious challenge for LGBTQ+ people. More efforts should be devoted to helping people better prevent, recognize, and cope with gaslighting behaviors across relational contexts.","PeriodicalId":47080,"journal":{"name":"Communication Studies","volume":"74 1","pages":"356 - 376"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47602927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Guided by this approach, we analyzed interviews with 32 individuals connected with the events of 9/11 in Newfoundland in three groups examining long-term narrative construction of resilience after a disrupting event and the idea that communication and construction of a resilience narrative can function as a larger community identity. This analysis revealed that participants not only use these narratives to shape their current lives but to narrate themselves and the community as resilient and generous. The findings also suggested theoretical implications that suggest we can broaden the definitions of both community and resilience and that these two are narratively constructed.","PeriodicalId":47080,"journal":{"name":"Communication Studies","volume":"74 1","pages":"285 - 301"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45038573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Guided by intergroup contact theory, the current online survey tested the influences of Saudi female journalists’ (N = 198) report of communication quantity and communication quality with male coworkers on their affective attitudes toward Saudi men and intention to quit the current job. Supporting our hypotheses, results indicated that Saudi female journalists’ communication quality with male coworkers was positively associated with affective attitudes toward men. In addition, results revealed a significant positive indirect effect of communication quality with male coworkers on affective attitudes toward men and a significant negative indirect effect on intention to quit through intergroup anxiety. These findings are discussed regarding prior literature on intergroup contact theory and Saudi women in the workplace.","PeriodicalId":47080,"journal":{"name":"Communication Studies","volume":"74 1","pages":"217 - 233"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2023-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49583334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
