Critics argue that in current designs of supportive technologies, autism is mostly framed as a 'disorder' whose limitations can be pragmatically compensated for. To increase uptake, designers should get a better handle on how to incorporate the full richness of the autistic experience into the design process. This paper presents an integrative framework of the autistic lifeworld, called <i>Autistic Lifeworld Design</i> (hereafter: ALD). ALD evolved in a transdisciplinary research setting, substantiated by 11 design case studies with autistic young adults as well as theoretical inquiries into enactivism, design and autism. It consists of four dimensions of experience - <i>sensory</i>, <i>habitual</i>, <i>social</i>, and <i>affective</i> -, each providing specific pointers on how to better understand how autistic people experience the world and how supportive technologies may complement that experience. By adopting an enactive approach, ALD enables a reframing of supportive technology as helping to sustain different levels of homoeostasis. It offers a novel lens that allows designers to put the lived experiences of autistic individuals at the centre of the design process, with special attention to the role of bodily structures and processing in shaping these experiences.</p>","PeriodicalId":46990,"journal":{"name":"CoDesign-International Journal of CoCreation in Design and the Arts","volume":"20 2","pages":"243-265"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11473053/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142477470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Radicalism, here, is an ongoing process of complicating and unsettling daily practices to reveal and thus acknowledge socio-political context. Semiotic analysis of ethnographic research with grassroots organisations is taken as the point of departure to understand how communities co-design meaning, and in turn how we might co-design new meanings through countering. Through counter-design in place, we observe small semiotic moments that problematise the rhetoric of horizontal democratic organising amongst the realities of coercion and power asymmetries. These semiotic moments are thus significant for how they reveal the reproduction of meaning and how this constructs, and can subsequently limit, the possible actions for these communities. In this sense, our approach constitutes a design praxis, through which we analyse what it means to employ countering against existing institutional power, both for our participants and for ourselves as designers. Here, we reveal the tenuousness of (designer/ly) intent in relation to and in combination with the artifice of readymade community designs, as these are shaped by work ‘on the ground’ and consider how this might impact the co-creation of democratic communities.","PeriodicalId":46990,"journal":{"name":"CoDesign-International Journal of CoCreation in Design and the Arts","volume":"AES-21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135111339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research activities involved two groups of end-users from different generations, who were tasked with working together to build tools that would encourage a deeper communication between them. To overcome limited knowledge on serious game design and encourage participation, this study utilises an experimental approach that involves a series of workshop activities following a design circle. The results indicate that engagement among cross-generational participants can be enhanced by involving a small, mixed group and utilising structural design materials in the co-design process. The groups developed a collaborative mode of task-oriented and ability-based division of labour to develop the game. This approach also stimulated individuals to take on multiple roles, that is, users, testers, informants, and design partners, and shift between roles as the group dynamic, supporting materials, and design stages evolve. Additionally, this collaborative process encourages participants to reflect on their role as future end-users when communicating sensitive issues to others.KEYWORDS: Co-designserious gamecross-generational communicationlife-and-deathgame design AcknowledgementsGrateful thanks to all those who participated in the workshop activities. The primary objective was to co-produce a design toolkit that can guide the development of live–work housing for low-income older people in Klong Toey. A three-day co-design workshop was held with local stakeholders to develop design alternatives for the prevailing live–work activities identified as a part of the field study. Within the framework of co-design methodology, the researchers engaged with the users as facilitators and translators to produce design options that informed the toolkit. The toolkit was developed under the overarching AgeingHood project, inspired by the unique housing and livelihood needs of the older people of Klong Toey, who often run small businesses from their own homes. It was conceived out of the understanding that ageing, housing and livelihood are interrelated aspects of the lives of low-income older people in this area of Bangkok. In addition to the toolkit, the project also led to impacts such as supporting residents’ live–work needs assessment and positive engagement and collaborative working with various local stakeholders.","PeriodicalId":46990,"journal":{"name":"CoDesign-International Journal of CoCreation in Design and the Arts","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136210422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examines the role of artifacts created by a team of interdisciplinary students during the process of co-designing augmented reality (AR) technology for a hybrid interior environment in an academic incubator building. The project emphasises the role of end-users as co-creators across phases of the design process, with collaborative work unexpectedly shifting from in-person to virtual practices due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Artifacts created by team members and in-depth interviews are analysed to examine how experiential knowledge was developed and shared between students from different majors. In addition to the development team data, this study draws on concurrent think-aloud data from other end-users about the AR-application prototype. The findings indicate the role of sharing scene demos, storyboards, and mock-ups as ‘boundary-negotiating artifacts’ which helped team members develop a common language for sharing key aspects of the AR development process. This study suggests a framework for intentional development of boundary-negotiating artifacts based on phases of the co-design process for further technology-based collaboration on interdisciplinary teams.KEYWORDS: Augmented realityco-designboundary-negotiating-artifactsembodimenthybrid environmentsmobile-AR AcknowledgmentsWe would like to thank and acknowledge the interdisciplinary team who contributed to this project as well as all the students who participated as part of the CoDT or as end users (EU). The paper explores the use of aesthetics to reshape social structures in social innovation. It delves into three social innovation projects in Milan, formulating the concept of ‘convivial aesthetic’, which refers to the design and creation of materials, interactions, social forms, and a sense of community that fosters autonomy, personal interdependence, and positive social change. The analysis of the projects is based on a framework consisting of four elements: material support, social interaction, ordinary social forms, and the sense of community.The latter is a crucial component of convivial aesthetic: by fostering a feeling of belonging and shared purpose, participants become part of a larger social community with collective goals. Designers use symbols, rituals, and events to strengthen this sense of community.The paper acknowledges the limitations of this framework, particularly its focus on smaller communities and the need for further exploration of larger societal structures. However, it highlights the value of convivial aesthetic in shifting the focus of design from physical objects to immaterial interactions and social forms, ultimately promoting positive social transformation.KEYWORDS: Aestheticconvivialityservice designsocial innovationsocial formscommunity Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Notes1. https://www.facebook.com/Nutrire-Milano-energie-per-il-cambiamento-186357474712947; https://www.facebook.com/mercatodellaterradimilano.2. These interventions focused on Time, Power, and Facilitation and were developed based on critiques found in design literature, critical disability scholarship, and the lived expertise of disabled people. Data was collected through recording activities and outputs, recorded observations, and elicited feedback. We found that adjusting time, which is essential for access, was difficult and required trade-offs. We also suggest that the presence of a ‘vibes watch’ facilitation role to monitor participation frequency, emotional tone, and power dynamics can be useful to address uneven power relations, caucusing can also be valuable but should be used at specific moments. Non-neutral facilitation, anti-oppression training, and regular reflection can help facilitation/design teams identify and address exclusionary practices. Technology can aid but also constrain access. Finally, despite all interventions, access remains a site of friction and political choices. Stakeholders continue to participate in different and not always equally valued ways, so secondary analysis is useful for understanding charette products or outputs.","PeriodicalId":46990,"journal":{"name":"CoDesign-International Journal of CoCreation in Design and the Arts","volume":"16 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2023-06-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74582812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper will explore the potential and implications of participatory design (PD) in the context of gender equality work in HEIs. We study the topic within a multinational, multidisciplinary consortium, which is working for gender equality in HEIs, using PD as a tool and inspiration. We identify a variety of local conditions shaping PD and gender equality work, divergent discourses on gender equality work, and several sources of friction regarding PD and gender equality work. We conceptualise PD for gender equality work as being highly contested and emergent, with multiple forces shaping its trajectory. PD needs to be sensitive towards local circumstances at the national and organisational level, both politically and ideologically. It needs to navigate within national and international politics and policies and consider different timescales beyond specific projects. It also needs to acknowledge that PD for gender equality entails design, discourse, and friction.","PeriodicalId":46990,"journal":{"name":"CoDesign-International Journal of CoCreation in Design and the Arts","volume":"48 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2023-06-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91023064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
