Past literature has acknowledged the ability of physical objects and creative methods in research to activate different lines of thinking and elicit thoughtful, in-depth responses from participants that may not have arisen through more ‘traditional’ methods of enquiry. Critical design, by nature, is intended to be a tool for starting discussion and debate. We employed this approach to inform the design of critical artefacts on the topic of community. These were then displayed at pop-up exhibitions in public spaces to engage members of the public in conversations on community. Responses informed future artefacts, which were exhibited again in an iterative cycle. We explored the potential of this research approach to both elicit and disseminate knowledge.","PeriodicalId":46826,"journal":{"name":"Design Journal","volume":"26 1","pages":"97 - 120"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43787934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sense of home can improve the quality of life after relocating to long-term care facilities. However, the effectiveness of the current design approach is debatable because it ignores the intrinsic meaning of home. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to propose a new design approach to interior design that brings a sense of home to PWDs through the intrinsic meaning of home. It first defines the intrinsic meaning of home as an ‘intimate relationship’ between people and space, and then proposes a hypothesis that PWDs can re-establish this relationship through bodily habits. The ethnographic case studies verified it and explained how the interior environment influences it. Finally, based on the previous findings, this research develops the design framework and design guidelines.","PeriodicalId":46826,"journal":{"name":"Design Journal","volume":"26 1","pages":"483 - 491"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44755095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study is based on a systematic review of the legal design in peer-reviewed publications from 2001 to 2021, to identify current knowledge of its concepts, processes, and methods in the literature. Our analysis found that legal design and design thinking are conceptually comparable as both possess a human-centred approach to innovation. However, due to the inherent nature of law and the legal system, legal design and design thinking processes and methods differ in practice. Notably, proactiveness and stakeholder-centred thinking are key concepts of legal design. Legal design emphasises interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to accommodate diverse stakeholders with competing priorities and to improve communication. Finally, drawing on the literature review, we conclude by reflecting on our analysis and raising further research questions for design practitioners and researchers.","PeriodicalId":46826,"journal":{"name":"Design Journal","volume":"26 1","pages":"399 - 416"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43637400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These data are rarely used to develop services for user or community well-being. By contrast, designers typically focus on these goals in contemporary design. An analysis using Systemic Design tools was carried out to understand the type of data flow that is generated by users in contemporary living contexts, to identify the main stakeholders of this data flow, and to highlight the main problems of data collection for the users, the community, and the local area. This study aims to contribute to this growing area of research, highlighting its most important problem which designer must solve to realize the right user-generated data flow system in contemporary living contexts.","PeriodicalId":46826,"journal":{"name":"Design Journal","volume":"26 1","pages":"52 - 73"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44577609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, we posit that this diversification of design may begin by acknowledging and addressing its multiple narratives at a local level, upon which a global web of detailed knowledge may emerge complex, global discourses and paradigms may require articulations of the intrinsically contextual. With this premise in mind, prior research has been held in Porto, Portugal, from 2018 to 2021, through in-person interviews with retired design teachers and professionals, and field work with local crafts and industry; these actions have confirmed the above hypothesis within the context of the case study. We now aim at further reverting these findings into higher education curricula and propose a working dynamic between the intrinsically contextual and a scalability of enquiry and relevance.","PeriodicalId":46826,"journal":{"name":"Design Journal","volume":"25 1","pages":"934 - 954"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43546203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using morphemic analysis, we propose a method for deriving a comprehensive understanding of the hidden interconnections between Chinese characters and artefacts. With the help of blending theory, a cognitive semantic model is proposed. Further, a mapping process is conducted in three phases: sensorial composition between the corporeal layer and the ‘visceral level’, behavioural completion between the behaviour layer and the ‘behavioural level’, and intellectual elaboration between the conceptual layer and the ‘reflective level’. Utilising case studies from traditional and modern times, two types of relationships between Chinese ideographs and artefacts are suggested: denotative and connotative. These relations and the ‘cooperative effect’ show the mutual connections between different forms of material culture in China and demonstrate the cultural beliefs embedded in artefacts.","PeriodicalId":46826,"journal":{"name":"Design Journal","volume":"26 1","pages":"329 - 350"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45228306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Strategising can be considered as a key competency for steering current practices from unsustainable paths towards sustainable futures; however, it remains underexplored how it can be animated or supported. In this paper, strategising is conceptualised according to four elements: Envisioning alternative futures, interacting reflectively, thinking divergently, and adopting a systems perspective. The paper draws from five research-through-design experiments and explores the potential of design-driven futuring, that is, those approaches that integrate design and futuring methods and tools, to nurture strategising across its four elements. Our empirical findings suggest that design-driven futuring supports strategising for sustainable futures by fostering (1) creative spaces for immersion, (2) encounters for intra- and interpersonal reflections and (3) mutual understanding through the visuality of design.","PeriodicalId":46826,"journal":{"name":"Design Journal","volume":"25 1","pages":"955 - 975"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42931265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through an interview study with 23 patients, designers, family caregivers, and healthcare professionals involved in participatory healthcare design initiatives, the authors identify underlying tensions associated with leveraging lived experiences in healthcare design and investigate how existing strategies for integrating lived experience relate to these tensions. In doing so, this research offers insights for practitioners regarding ways of strategically navigating tensions when integrating people’s lived experience through design in complex healthcare contexts.","PeriodicalId":46826,"journal":{"name":"Design Journal","volume":"25 1","pages":"997 - 1018"},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45551107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
